Lack Of Dems Drives Gay Kids To Suicide

What leads gay, straight teens to attempt suicide?

By Lindsey Tanner, AP Medical Writer [sic]
April 18, 2011

CHICAGO – Suicide attempts by gay teens — and even straight kids — are more common in politically conservative areas where schools don’t have programs supporting gay rights, a study involving nearly 32,000 high school students found.

We will not be told that this study was funded by "a center for gay research" until the third to the last paragraph of this very long article.

Those factors raised the odds and were a substantial influence on suicide attempts even when known risk contributors like depression and being bullied were considered, said study author Mark Hatzenbuehler, a Columbia University psychologist and researcher.

From Mr. Hatzenbuehler’s bio, as listed at Columbia University: "Mark Hatzenbuehler recently completed his doctoral degree in psychology at Yale University. As a Health & Society Scholar he intends to continue his studies related to mental health disparities among lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. He examines how environmental events, e.g., stigma, lead to psychopathology. His research has documented that discrimination at the structural level may be harmful for the mental health of the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community. He received a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health to study the mechanisms that link stigma to psychopathology."

You see, it’s science. This graduate student had no biases whatsoever, going in.

His study found a higher rate of suicide attempts even among kids who weren’t bullied or depressed when they lived in counties less supportive of gays and with relatively few Democrats. A high proportion of Democrats was a measure used as a proxy for a more liberal environment

The new study was published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics…

The study relied on teens’ self-reporting suicide attempts within the previous year. Roughly 20 percent of gay, lesbian and bisexual teens said they had made an attempt, versus 4 percent of straight kids.

And this isn’t in any way due to homosexuality. It is due to the lack of support for homosexuality. And the lack of Democrats.

The study’s social index rated counties on five measures: prevalence of same-sex couples; registered Democratic voters; liberal views; schools with gay-straight alliances; schools with policies against bullying gay students; and schools with antidiscrimination policies that included sexual orientation.

By the way, in case there were any doubts, it should be clear by now that all of this newfound concern about ‘bullying’ from the White House is really just code for promoting support for homosexuality among children.

Gay, lesbian and bisexual teens living in counties with the lowest social index scores were 20 percent more likely to have attempted suicide than gays in counties with the highest index scores. Overall, about 25 percent of gay teens in low-scoring counties had attempted suicide, versus 20 percent of gay teens in high-scoring counties.

Among straight teens, suicide attempts were 9 percent more common in low-scoring counties. There were 1,584 total suicide attempts — 304 of those among gays, lesbians and bisexuals.

We will discover later that all of this is based on what these students said in filling out their responses to this study in the classroom. There is no other evidence submitted for these "suicide attempts."

Hatzenbuehler said the results show that "environments that are good for gay youth are also healthy for heterosexual youth."

What could be more obviously. Environments that promote homosexuality are the ideal place to raise young and impressionable children. Isn’t that just obvious.

After all, what could go wrong?

The study is based on 2006-08 surveys of 11th-graders that state health officials conducted in Oregon classrooms; Oregon voter registration statistics; Census data on same-sex couples; and public school policies on gays and bullying

You see. The study is based on responses filled out by 11th-graders (16 and 17 year olds) in the classroom. This is what passes for ‘science’ today.

Zachary Toomay, a high school senior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., said the study "seems not only plausible, but it’s true."

The star swimmer, 18, lives in a conservative, mostly Republican county. He’s active in his school’s gay-straight alliance, and said he’d never been depressed until last year when classmates "ostracized" him for being vocal about gay rights.

Toomay said signs of community intolerance, including bumper stickers opposing same-sex marriage, also made him feel down, and he sought guidance from a school counselor after contemplating suicide.

It sounds like "contemplating suicide" is considered a "suicide attempt."

Funding for the study came from the National Institutes for Health and a center for gay research at the Fenway Institute, an independent Harvard-affiliated health care and research center.

Notice how far down in the piece this minor detail is buried.

Michael Resnick, a professor of adolescent mental health at the University of Minnesota’s medical school, said the study "certainly affirms what we’ve come to understand about children and youth in general.

"They are both subtly and profoundly affected by what goes around them," he said, including the social climate and perceived support.

Funny. That used to be the argument against open homosexuality.

Ahhh…to play Devil’s Advocate to the graduate student author:

There’s a going theory that many teens who “attempt suicide” are doing so to get attention. That many of them intentionally do things that won’t kill them, but will result in a few hours of discomfort (i.e. slicing their arms the wrong way – a couple of light slashes – or taking a higher dose of Tylenol), in order to get attention from whomever they are seeking it from (parents, friends, sending a message to “bullies”). Therefore, combining that with the never-ending militant gay activities (marches, literature, the fact every movie or TV show must now have at least one token gay character who basically takes over the plot) and the fact that this study was done strictly through a questionaire (with kids who’ve grown up being whatever they want on-line and, thus, more likely to lie in written word), can this not be perceived as many gays just want more attention? And that you are simply feeding their Narcissism Complexes?

Well, since parents have already conceded that it’s the government’s job to raise and educate their kids, this is how it goes.

Any thoughts on how the mass marketing of sexuality to children via television, music, et al might be impacting this statistic, O ‘scholar of society?’

How about the culture of the Public Screwel system where the only thing the young skulls full of mush learn is that being accepted amongst your peers is all that matters in life.

Any thoughts, O wizards of smart? Anyone.. anyone? Bueller?

Oh wait, homosexuality isn’t learned behavior but a natural state. Well I agree with Pro that Nature appears to be a real bitch, then.

  4. Petronius says:

By and large, teenage suicide is a white racial phenomenon. Clinical depression occurs with far greater frequency among Europeans and East Asians than among blacks. Also, studies in multiracial countries have shown that the suicide rate of whites is double that of blacks.

Hatzenbuehler’s finding that suicides predominate in Republican counties is consistent with those results.

You have to have aspirations to beome disappointed in yourself.

Indeed, for suicide is the ultimate expression of futility, of all hope lost or gone.

Interesting points. Few things can emasculate a man like killing his ambitions and drive to be productive. The Marxists largely already have accomplished that in minority populations, who in turn draw their self-esteem and identity solely from their race. Who can deny they’ve been savaging successful White families for decades now, for the very same reasons of desiring control over them?

I grew up right at ground zero of this particular effort, in Orange County, CA, the child of upper-middle class Catholic Conservative public sector workers. The effect Liberalism has had on specifically turning my peers against their parents, who are usually pouring their life’s work into giving their kids a chance for solid opportunities (when in reality delivering them right into the hands of psychic vampires) – it’s been depressingly effective.

Since I’m not an intellectual, I can actually use common sense to think about things like suicide.

People commit suicide when they feel like they are outcasts and can’t see a way out of the situation. Therefore, children hardly ever commit suicide; they rarely feel like outcasts because they almost always have family members who take care of them, and their brains simply aren’t advanced enough to become introspective. Even kids in foster homes rarely commit suicide. Suicide is also relatively infrequent in mature adults because they have usually seen enough of life to understand that you can almost always get what you need, even if you can’t always get what you want. Teenagers have the highest rate of suicide because their brains are developed enough to understand where they fit in society, but they aren’t old enough to understand that almost everybody is going to be able to find some satisfaction somewhere.

So I don’t doubt for a second that homosexuals have a higher rate of suicide than straight people. Almost by definition, they are outcasts from a segment of society. In this respect, learning about homosexuality is good for young homosexuals, because they realize they aren’t alone.

For blacks, the suicide rate is low because in 2011, they are taught from birth that they have somebody else to blame. Whatever their problems are, they aren’t the fault of the black child. And they also learn pretty quickly that they aren’t going to have to work very hard at anything, if at all. They are going to be supplied with a decent lifestyle, no matter what they do. And for the ones who are angry at the level of lifestyle provided them and turn to crime or other forms of acting out, they still don’t blame themselves. NOTHING is their fault. Nothing.

But there are still a lot of white kids who are afflicted by their parents with aspirations. They get into their teen years thinking they ought to lead good lives, and the media assault them 24×7 with what they should look like, talk like, and aspire to. For most, the level of success will never be achievable. And since they are white, they don’t have anyone to blame but themselves. Ergo, too many give up before they have even started. I say if there is any party to blame for it, it’s the Make Believe Media for teaching them that normal people live in NYC in $5,000 a month apartments.

But one thing you can bet the farm on…the kids committing suicide are not doing it only because they think they won’t have successful careers, or because they feel like expectations are too high. They do it because they think they are ugly, and the culture has taught them that nothing is worse than not being considered attractive. Again, the MBM is the culprit. It’s similar to the problems in the Middle East, which have only reached the current peak because it is so obvious to the serfs living there that people living anywhere else have it so much better.

Steve, that is singularly the most coffee-spitting headline you’ve concocted yet

  6. Chase says:

1st rule in statistics: Identify and remove bias. This means that when you are comparing groups you must adjust the populations so that other factors that reasonably contribute to the observed outcome are removed.

Hmmm, Oregon? The state that had diddled around with assisted suicides? What about the emo population there – those kids fascinated with, and perhaps building stature in the covens by who tried the most times, or came closest in their attention-seeking attempts at exploring the after-life?

How much did this guy swindle the taxpayers for this round?

  7. beautyofreason says:

I remember filling out an anonymous question form when I was about eleven years old. It asked about all sorts of things such as drug use, sexual activity, etc. Being an idiot, I remember ticking off a good deal of the questions just because they sounded shocking and for some reason, it was fun pretending to be “bad.” I remember ticking off yes to a question about “smoking grass” because I thought fallen branches in a bonfire (a family habit of clearing old brush from the yard) counted. I was both innocent and stupid then, but anyone reading my survey would have been shocked.

So I would take those sorts of surveys with a grain of salt. And it looks like the researcher already had something to prove when he started his “research.”

  8. JohnMG says:

Maybe there is an “up” side to all of this. It would be hard to be “gay” if the good Dr. (PhD) Mark Hatzenbuehler’s research proves true.

And what might the good Dr’s sexual persuasion be?

  9. Rip Cord says:

MAN, Another reason to get rid of the Democrat Party! Who knew? LOL

  10. Anonymoose says:

What’s most telling is that even in the “supportive” environments 20% of the gay/lesbian/bisexual teens had attempted suicide versus 4% of the straights. (Though it’s not clear if these were actual attempts or threats). The 20% more likelihood of committing suicide in the unsupportive right wing environment is playing with numbers. It’s only 5% out of the entire number of gay/lesbian/bisexual respondents, which is almost negligible. How much effort would it take to bring these numbers down to parity with straight teenagers?

And I try not to tell this story but I think it’s relevant here. When I was in college (about 19-20) there was a girl I had a crush on but she was very shy and hard to get to know. There was a gay guy (we all worked at the same place) who knew her.

I didn’t like him but he suggested we go out as a threesome and I thought maybe I had it wrong, he was trying to be an icebreaker between me and her. It turned out it was his way to get to me, and when I tried to tell him, “wait a minute, I’m straight and here’s this girl I have a crush on,” he insisted I was a “repressed homosexual” and that I needed to come out. It was three weeks of phone calls, late night visits to my apartment, and him trashing me in front of my co-workers, and the more hostile I got the more it seemed to encourage him.

He finally lost interest and had burned up his welcome with so many people he left town. What does this have to do with the article? He was also a “boo-hoo feel sorry for me I’m depressed and suicidal” type. So when they say how unhappy they are, it’s not always how the world has been treating them.

  11. canary says:

“Toomay said signs of community intolerance, including bumper stickers opposing same-sex marriage, also made him feel down, and he sought guidance from a school counselor after contemplating suicide.”

Absolute bull. I never see signs, bumper stickers, or hear this kind of stuff, and it’s not the problem at our schools.
What show on TV show or movie doesn’t have the characters. It’s a pretty numb thing.

Gays just attempt suicide more, because it’s more difficult to find a partner. They can’t handle break-ups as well, as it’s more difficult to find a partner. They have more jealousy issues leading to violence because
of lack of partners available. And then if partners are hard to find they go on a straight sex binge, and get suicidal over that. They have some very messed up lives. They need to grow up and act mature. Stay away from those train bars.

And another problem that makes them feel so doomed is the fear of getting aids. And this is a universal worry for everyone, and imagine gay people really worry and get scared more than most. I’ve talked to gays that get tests then have unprotected sex, and they worry until the next test. The gays also realize that they can be “used” like hetro
relationships, and that can add to the worry of aids or spreading aids.
