First Guantanamo video released
A video of a 16-year-old detainee being questioned at the US’s Guantanamo Bay prison camp is made public for the first time.
The video was filmed secretly through an air duct.
It shows 16-year-old Omar Khadr being asked by Canadian officials in 2003 about events leading up to his capture by US forces, Canadian media have said.
The Canadian citizen is accused of throwing a grenade that killed a US soldier in Afghanistan in 2002.
He is seen in a distressed state and complaining that he has been tortured.
The footage was made public by Mr Khadr’s lawyers following a Supreme Court ruling in May that the Canadian authorities had to hand over key evidence against him to allow a full defence of the charges he is facing.
During the 10-minute video - filmed secretly through a ventilation shaft - Mr Khadr can be seen crying, his face buried in his hands, and pulling at his hair. He can be heard repeatedly chanting: "Help me."
At one point he tells the foreign ministry official and agents from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that he was tortured while being held at the US military detention centre at Bagram air base in Afghanistan.
He raises his orange shirt to show wounds and tells them: "You don’t care about me."
Later, one of the officials tells Mr Khadr: "You know I’m not a doctor, but I think you’re getting good medical care."
Mr Khadr was 15 when he was captured by US forces during a gun battle at a suspected al-Qaeda camp in Afghanistan.
One of Mr Khadr’s lawyers, Dennis Edney, said they hoped the video would cause an outcry in Canada and pressure Prime Minister Stephen Harper to demand the US not prosecute their client.
"I hope Canadians will be outraged to see the callous and disgraceful treatment of a Canadian youth," Mr Edney told the Toronto Star.
"Canadians should demand to know why they’ve been lied to." …
Mr Khadr, now 21, faces multiple terrorism-related charges, the most serious of which is murder. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
Oh yeah. That is definitely torture.
It is right up there with giving Saddam’s henchmen inferior brands of cigarettes.
Still, if the young man actually cried, he should be let go. Who cares if he murdered an American soldier with a hand grenade?
Who are we to judge?

This kid’s family in Canada refer to themselves as an “Al-Qaeda family” -with good reason. They also made it plain that they think Canada is an immoral country though they don’t seem to mind receiving our social assistance.
There is a very vocal element in Canada -with the ever-vile CBC leading the charge- who want him returned to Canada. This is the usual “America bad, Israel bad, Conservatives bad, Soldiers bad, Christians bad” crowd.
A slightly different opinion will be found in factory lunchrooms, bars, hunt camps, and other places where normal people gather: Most people I talk to would like to see the whole damned family fired out the ass end of one of our shiny new C-17’s the next time one’s flying over Pakistan.
The only “outrage” normal Canadians are feeling over all this, is that the press keeps referring to him as a Canadian.

Yeah Gila, that was on the news this morning. I’ve been following the story (actually there are a number of these individuals whose cases are being kept in the news).
For a while there, I thought we were going to wind up letting him stay. I’m glad to see some common sense coming from the bench for once.

Why a country would coddle those who wish to destroy it is beyond me. Life in prison? That’s it? The death penalty is sudddenly off the table?
It’s high time we stopped taking prisoners. The other options we have are:
1. Release them immediately so that they can engage in more acts of terror
2. Hold the in Club Gitmo where they can
a) find a collaborator “chaplain” to pass along information to other terrorists, or
b) live on my tax dollars for years, making a mockery of our legal system the whole time, and continuously attacking the unlucky servicemen who have to guard them, until they are eventually released (see item #1).
So again, what’s the up side to letting these cretins live?
