Laffer: Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

From BBC News:

Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

US President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The committee highlighted Mr Obama’s efforts to support international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament…

The laureate – chosen by a five-member committee – wins a gold medal, a diploma and 10m Swedish kronor ($1.4m).

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said in a statement.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population."

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

"It is a clear signal that we want to advocate the same as he has done," he said.

He specifically mentioned Mr Obama’s work to strengthen international institutions and work towards a world free of nuclear arms

The statement from the Nobel Committee said Mr Obama had "created a new climate in international politics".

"Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," it said.

The committee added that the US was now playing a more constructive role in meeting "the great climatic challenges" facing the world, and that democracy and human rights would be strengthened

In other words, the US must act and be governed "on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population."

Still, if the selection committee is not careful, they are going to diminish the glory of winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

After all, Mr. Obama has not even made a slide show.

If there has ever been a more obvious indication that the Nobel Peace Prize means absolutely nothing, it’s this vomit-inducing headline from the Associated Press:

President Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked Nobel observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline.

Obama’s name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama’s vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play,” the committee said. …

Of course all Obama has done is make the world more dangerous, following Chamberlain’s time-tested principles of capitulation at any and all turns until our enemies destroy us utterly.

    A world without nuclear weapons?

When any college student can build one if they can buy or steal the materials?

Only liberals of the blindest variety could ever dream such utopian dreams without any relation whatsoever to the real world and not be laughed hysterically off the stage.

Of course the US President who did more for peace than any other?

    Ronald Wilson Reagan.

It should be renamed the Nobel Appeasement Prize.

AP: In a surprise, Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize
By Karl Ritter And Matt Moore, Oct 9 2009

OSLO – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

The stunning choice made Obama the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and

    shocked Nobel observers because Obama
took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline.

Obama’s name had been mentioned in speculation before the award but many Nobel watchers believed it was too early to award the president.

Speculation had focused on Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, a Colombian senator and a Chinese dissident, along with an Afghan woman’s rights activist.

The Nobel committee praised Obama’s creation of “a new climate in international politics”

Rather than recognizing concrete achievement, the 2009 prize appeared intended to support initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations…

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee said…. ”

The committee chairman said after awarding the 2002 prize to former Democratic President Jimmy Carter, for his mediation in international conflicts,…

The Nobel committee received a record 205 nominations …. not immediately apparent who nominated Obama.

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.”

The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel’s guidelines, expanding the prize beyond peace mediation to include efforts to combat poverty, disease and climate change.

Associated Press Writer Ian MacDougall contributed to this report.

Jumping the gun for a winner who has caused so much discord in our country of the USA. Bus, since Jimmy Carter also won, it makes since.

  4. sheehanjihad says:

Carter won it too…which shows how flawed that prize is to begin with. Now, Obama is going to go peanut boy one better by fawning, apologizing, and begging forgiveness for our nation being as great as it once was….

Alfred Nobel is spinning in his grave….to bear witness to his legacy prize being awarded to a spineless socialist who will find out the hard way that his “Peace Prize” will in reality give Muslims worldwide the inspiration to cause as many deaths as they possibly can…. and they know Obama wont lift a finger to stop them.

Peace Prize my butt. It has morphed into a prize for the biggest wimp on the planet, and I am positive Afghanistan’s population is swimming in the irony of his award. Europeans are smart though…give charisma boy a gold star on his forehead for smooching cheeks…and he will be quicker to fall in behind G-20’s lead..

  5. Not at all surprising.

He is floundering, and the World’s left must bolster his presidency lest they not reap the results of helping this globalist bring us to their level… and.. They hate bush.

  6. wirenut says:

Make no mistake about it, this is not a prize, it’s a gift.

  7. Kilmeny says:

Truly the biggest WTF moment, so far, in an administration chock full of them.

  8. Rusty Shackleford says:

“…his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,”

Which, of course, has resulted in the exact opposite.

And, this will go straight to his ego. But real people know what this “prize” has turned into and what it really means. But for the time being, and perhaps to our advantage, it will embolden the boy and as it confirms to him that his asinine tactics are “working”, he will further overreach and therefore, step in it bigtime. Nothing better for getting a guy t screw up royal than positive reinforcement of bad behavior.

<b<And, of course, as was pointed out in American Thinker:

    http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/10/president_obama_wins_nobel_pea.html

The deadline for submission to the Prize electorate had to be sumitted NLT 1 February, 2009, two weeks after the boy had taken office. And his list of accomplishments were exactly zero and remain such to this day.

Talk about the tail wagging the dog. He not only got elected on “hope & change”, he apparently buffaloed the entire Peace Prize Commission. Which, by the way, will force them into having a lot to answer for.

Question: “How do you award such a prize to an individual who had been in office for less than two weeks, and who’s accomplishments, as head of state, or otherwise, for that matter, amounted to zip, zero, zilch, nada, the big goose egg, null, nothing?”

I don’t think even a teleprompter can help the NPP committee on this.

  9. TheChicagoWay says:

So…just yearning for world peace is now the criteria for winning a Nobel peace prize? If this is the case, then eligbility for a peace prize has just been expanded to every beauty pageant contestant EVER…

How about the pencil-neck from Berekely with the “war is not the answer” bumper sticker on his Volvo? Is he now eligible?

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

“So…just yearning for world peace is now the criteria for winning a Nobel peace prize?”

Yup, it’s not just reserved for beauty pageants anymore.

(Wait’ll you see the swimsuit competition)

He’ll probably win an Emmy next year for “best performance given by a sitting president on prime time”.

  10. TheChicagoWay says:

“the president was “humbled” to have won the prize”….Does anybody in their right mind, (even the most ardent supporter of The One”), believe for a nanosecond that Mr. Obama was “humbled”??? This is the biggest whopper yet….Where’s Joe Wilson when you need him?

  11. GL0120 says:

Does anyone else believe that George Soros bought this award for his hand picked boy?
It makes sense; The Chosen One and his followers can now point to this prize and proclaim that he has been recognized as a visionary by such an august body, so now it’s time to set aside our differences and unite behind his policies.

  12. Yarddog1 says:

FEED THE BEAST – FEED THE BEAST

The Peter Principle is alive and well in this display of lunacy.

Talk about the benificiary of affirmative action.

So sad that the world (yep – the whole thing) has gone completely mad.

  13. Rusty Shackleford says:

Here’s something I hadn’t considered until another poster at American Thinker brought it up.

The award has NOTHING to do with Blammo. It has everything to do with the NPP commission reminding the US how much they hated Bush. It’s a prize, if you will, awarding the voters of the US for electing this drooling moron, who is totally the opposite of anything Bush, in their eyes.

While Barry is thinking it has everything to do with him, which is his way of doing business anyhow….he misses the subtlety of the message that they are sending to the US.

However, the message the NPP electorate is missing is that clearly half of the American people couldn’t give a flip about them or their shiny prize.

I mean, after all, it’s football season.

    • JohnMG says:

Nobel Peace Prize award. Ranks right up there with winning a Roller Derby championship……almost!

  14. proreason says:

You have to put it in context. The Nobel Peace Prize has nothing whatsoever to do with peace

It’s now part of the Left’s strategy to remake the world into a two-class system of comissars and plebians.

    Consider:
    – political correctness
    – “social justice”
    – Marxists control the universities and education
    – Marxists sympathizers control the MSM
    – the global warming hoax

The Leftists took control of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Pulitzer prizes, the Oscars, and many other “awards” years ago and use them as a means of political indoctrination.

If one had thought about it a couple of months ago, it would have been obvious that the Moron would get the “prize”.

If he appears in a movie, he’ll get an Oscar as well.

  15. beautyofreason says:

For dangerous appeasement in the face of aggression, I nominate the late Neville Chamberlain for a posthumous Nobel Peace prize:

“We, the German Führer and Chancellor, and the British Prime Minister, have had a further meeting today…we regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again….My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honour.
I believe it is peace for our time…”

While the appeasement of Munich may have inadvertently led to the death of millions due to inaction in the face of Hitler’s government, the moron’s peaceful prodding on the Iranian nuclear program (and soon to be Venezuela’s) will have no ill effects….I’m sure.

“citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.”

In short, disarming first world Western countries, taking a stance against any conflict to stop nukes from being produced in the third world such as Iran, and calling proponents of fascist Islamic law “wise and gracious” (as O. did to the Saudi King) is enough to win this prize. I think I’ve got it.

    So much for peace.

  16. Reality Bytes says:

Gee! Carter, Gore & now Obama all got the peace prize. Hey, what about Clinton?! He got a piece too!

  17. proreason says:

What this really means is that the commun / social / fasc / monarch-ist totalitarians on the Nobel committee thoroughly approve of the United States voluntarilly turning itself into a 3rd-world weakling so that it will no longer be a force that can stop tyrrany around the world, particularly the flavor of tyranny most loved by the committee members..

    • proreason says:

Rush said today that it’s the Nobel Committe manipulating the Moron into withdrawing from Afghanistan.

Well, if that’s true, they shot their wad on the wrong target. Because there is no chance the idiot is playing to win in Afghanistan.

Rush may have the right theory, but the wrong country.

What is far more likely to occur is the Israelis bombing the Iranian’s nukes. And to do that, they have to have at least tacit approval of the US.

  18. proreason says:

How to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 12 days.

    http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2009/10/09/tommy-seno-obama-nobel-prize-win/

    Seriously.

Nominations close 12 days after the Moron was sworn in.

    • Confucius says:

I’d like to know who nominated Obama.

In the meantime, these are the people who voted for Obama:

–Thorbjørn Jagland (chairman): A politician and member of the Labour Party. He is also a vice-president of Socialist International, an organization through which he has denounced the perceived presence of islamophobia. Commenting on Obama’s prize, Jagland said, “Some people say — and I understand it — Isn’t it premature? Too early? Well, I’d say then that it could be too late to respond three years from now. It is now that we have the opportunity to respond — all of us.”

–Sissel Rønbeck: A politician and also a member of the Labour Party.

–Ågot Valle: A politician and member of the Socialist Left Party, which in turn is a member of the Nordic Green Left Alliance. Commenting on Obama’s prize, Valle said, “. . . this was primarily an award on his work on, and commitment to, nuclear disarmament — and his dialogue. Of course there will be criticism, because he hasn’t achieved his goals yet. It will take time, but this is a support.”

–Inger-Marie Ytterhorn: A politician and member of the Progress Party.

–Kaci Kullmann Five: A politician and member of the Conservative Party (which is fiscally conservative but socially liberal).

      Interesting, yes?

The explanations proffered by Jagland and Valle are particularly interesting given that Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go to:

“. . . the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.”

The key words being shall have done.

  19. canary says:

America tells the entire world, America is not a Christian nation. That makes him the anti-Christ beast, the crowds will worship. There has been less Peace since Obama was elected. Obama empathizes and relates with the ”man-made disastors’.
