Levin To Introduce Bill Of Attainder Against Romney

From the amused folks at The Hill:

Democrats hit Mitt with a tax bill

By Bernie Becker | Thursday, July 19,2012

Congressional Democrats took aim at Mitt Romney on Wednesday by calling for legislation to require presidential candidates to disclose a decade of their tax returns and the value and location of accounts in tax-haven countries.

The transparent effort to pressure Romney came from Democrats in the House and Senate, suggesting Congress’s attention, more than ever, is on the 2012 fight for the White House.

The call for 10 years of tax returns came from Rep. Sandy Levin (Mich.), the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee. He said he would introduce legislation soon

The Ways and Means Committee basically writes our tax code. This is the committee that Charlie Rangel used to chair, and still serves on.

Levin’s effort would also require candidates to disclose further information about offshore accounts and their investment income.

It’s really too bad that our Congressmen are so unfamiliar with the US Constitution. Bills of Attainder, that is, legislation that is aimed at individuals, bills that retroactively criminalize activities, are expressly prohibited. (That is, at least until Justice Roberts gets at crack at them.) So this is nothing more than a political stunt. And, of course, it reeks of hypocrisy.

As we have often noted, Mr. Romney put his finances in a blind trust back in 2003. He has no knowledge and no control over where they are invested. Which is quite different from Congressmen, who do not have blind trusts, and who do have offshore accounts. (Like the DNC’s head Debbie Wasserman Schultz.) And who also enrich themselves to the tune of millions of dollars, thanks to their insider knowledge.

In fact, many Congressmen, such as Pelosi, have enriched to the tune of millions of dollars, thanks to their insider knowledge. In fact, Congress finally passed an anti ‘insider trading bill’ that was "aimed at Nancy Pelosi," just last March. ((BTW, Ms. Pelosi is also married to the millionaire head of an ‘evil’ venture capital firm. Where are his records?)

From McClatchy News:

Most members of Congress keep their tax returns secret

By Kevin G. Hall and David Lightman | Wednesday, July 18, 2012

WASHINGTON — Rep. Nancy Pelosi was emphatic. Mitt Romney’s refusal to release more than two years of his personal tax returns, she said, makes him unfit to win confirmation as a member of the president’s Cabinet, let alone to hold the high office himself.

Sen. Harry Reid went farther: Romney’s refusal to make public more of his tax records makes him unfit to be a dogcatcher.

They do not, however, think that standard of transparency should apply to them. The two Democratic leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives are among hundreds of senators and representatives from both parties who refused to release their tax records.

If it weren’t for hypocrisy, Democrats would have no principles at all.

Just 17 out of the 535 members of Congress released their most recent tax forms or provided some similar documentation of their tax liabilities in response to requests from McClatchy over the last three months. Another 19 replied that they wouldn’t release the information, and the remainder never responded to the query

To Pelosi and some other top Democrats, the focus is on Romney..

"He could not even become a Cabinet member for that lack of disclosure, and now with that lack of disclosure he wants to be president of the United States,” said Pelosi, the House minority leader, who’s from California.

“We’d like to know what’s in those tax returns that he refuses to show to the American public. Did he pay any taxes?” Reid asked in an impassioned speech to the Senate on July 11. Days later, Reid, who’s from Nevada, suggested that Romney’s refusal to release more than two years of tax returns would make him ineligible to serve even as dogcatcher.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, also has harangued Romney for refusing to release more tax returns, calling it a “penchant for secrecy.”

Again, this is the same Debbie Wasserman Schultz who has both refused to release her own tax returns and who has investments in Swiss banks.

All three refused repeated requests from McClatchy to release their own returns, requests that started before the flap over Romney’s records

Pelosi aides refused, saying she’s disclosed all that Congress requires

But none of this stops Pelosi and Reid and the rest of the Democrats from denouncing Romney, even though he has not done what they accuse him of doing. While they actually have.

It is surreal. And it wouldn’t be possible if we had a free press.

Dems’ actions of late can be summed up in one word – desperation.

  2. Petronius says:

For Pete’s sake. If they want Mitt’s old tax returns they should just ask Hillary Clinton for a copy.

I’m sure she’s got them in her files.

  3. Astravogel says:

But, but, but, Democrats are so sexy, after
all, who ever heard of a nice piece of elephant?

  4. Right of the People says:

While they’re at it they should include a rider that forces all presidential candidates to reveal their school transcripts like that would ever happen.

I’m sure all the Democrats use Wesley Snipes’s attorneys.

Our Forefathers knew what to do.

You know what we’re going to have to do.

because if the Dems and the Left sense they’re going to lose it all …. they will burn it all to the ground rather than be displaced

Are we going to let them?

  7. P. Aaron says:

Sander Levin is a decrepit piece of sh!t. He wants the Ways & Means chairmanship so bad. He had it for a few months in 2010 when Rangle was forced out. Then the republican landslide booted him. I laughed at his sorry ass.

He’s just a vengeful cretin, a cranky loser, an ignoramus of the highest order.

But………..Michigan keeps putting him back in office. Interesting, no?

It is for this reason I refuse, and have since 1984, to vote for ANY person that has a ‘D’ behind his/her name. There may be SOME crooked Republicans, but since that time I’ve yet to see ANY respectable Democrats. NONE!
