Man Still On Food Stamps After $2M Jackpot

From the Fox affiliate in Detroit, WJBK:

Michigan Man Still Receiving Food Assistance Despite Winning $2 Million Jackpot

Wednesday, 18 May 2011

(WJBK) – A Michigan man has continued to accept food aid from the state even though he won big in a state lottery game and said he told officials about it.

Leroy Fick [sic] won the $2 million jackpot in the "Make Me Rich!" contest in June. Despite receiving about $850,000 in winnings, the Auburn resident is still using his Michigan Bridge Card, an electronic version of food stamps.

Fick’s lawyer said his client hasn’t done anything illegal.

"He did call the state," John Wilson, the Midland attorney representing Fick, told The Bay City Times for a story Wednesday. "Not to mention, the state knows he won. They issued the check."

Further, Wilson said, Fick’s case was recently reviewed and his eligibility was confirmed.

"It’s not him," Wilson said. "As far as him doing the right thing by the (Department of Human Services), he did the right thing."

Fick told WNEM-TV in Saginaw that more than half the lottery prize went to taxes. He said the department told him he could continue to use the card, which is paid with tax dollars.

"If you’re going to … try to make me feel bad, you aren’t going to do it," he said.

Fick appeared on the lottery show after winning $1,000 on one of the lottery’s $20 instant games.

Department spokeswoman Gisgie Gendreau said that, under federal guidelines, if a person receives a lump-sum payment, the winnings are not counted as income. The money is considered income if the person receives regular, ongoing payments.

DHS inspector general’s office director Al Kimichik said food assistance on the Bridge card is guided by federal regulations but authorities are taking steps to change the policy.

This story should be put in a time capsule, so that future generations can study the sad state our country was in back in 2011.

By the way, since the winning ticket was almost certinaly paid for by taxpayers’ money, shouldn’t the taxpayers get the prize?

I wonder how he feels now that he’s one of the “evil rich” who stole money from the poor to get where he is today.

Once in a while something happens that is the perfect illustration of a system.

Although there are too many flaws to enumerate about government, the biggest and worst flaw is it’s inflexibility. Whenever something happens, if it’s outside of the law / regulation, government CAN’T deal with it. Doesn’t matter if it makes perfect sense, doesn’t matter if it needs to be done, doesn’t matter if neglecting to act is stupid or dangerous. If it ain’t in the law, it can’t be done.

This example doesn’t have anything to do with commerce, but it illustrates why government shouldn’t have a damn thing to do with commerce, except in the most extraordinary circumstances. Government takes months or years to adapt to changing circumstances or even something that was overlooked in existing circumstances. If private business made a mistake like this lottery example, it might compensate the food stamp guy somehow by giving him tickets to something in addition to his prize, but no way private business would carry on with a hole like that in a system. Food Stamp Guy would be the last one to ever go through that loophole, and he would be lucky to get through it himself.

Expand this situation to Obamycare and tremble about what might happen.

Oh wait, it’s already happening! 1000+ waivers in the first year alone. Well, I’ll be darned.

As a nation we really have gone down the rabbit hole. It’s almost like living in a parallel but dysfunctional universe where up is down and left is right.

I’m having a hard time getting my head around what this guy did. My wife and I have discussed what we would ever do if we won a substantial amount of cash like this and I know for sure I would be changing my lifestyle immediately including my employment status. This clown on the other hand seems to be chugging along on the status quo. Probably the only change he’s made is he buys better dope or booze now and name brand cigarettes instead of GPCs.

This guy is the perfect example of the entitlement mentality. Even though he’s been blessed with this windfall he still can’t wean himself from the government teat. I bet he feels he’s “owed” those food stamps even though he can well afford to feed himself and lavishly at that. I noticed he did lawyer himself up pretty damned quick.

    Pro,

You’re absolutely correct, the government is so ponderous, slow and inefficient that any little change that comes along becomes a major crisis. Of course Spike and his minions know you never waste one of those.

And now the famous question………wait for it…….who runs this quagmire?

  7. Helena says:

    From the ABC report:
Fick’s attorney said his client will stop using his Bridge Card if Michigan changes its policy, and doesn’t feel bad about using the taxpayer funded program because Fick just paid more than $1 million of his lottery winnings in state taxes. “He feels like he’s paid into the system,” Wilson said.
Even though his client won more money than many people earn in a lifetime, Wilson said Fick is not living like a millionaire. “He lives a simple life,” Wilson said. “He doesn’t even have the Internet.”

HE DOESN’T EVEN HAVE THE INTERNET???!!! Oh, the humanity! We must have an internet assistance program inserted into the Healthcare bill amendments soon to be coming down the pike. I wish I were joking.

    • JohnMG says:

….. “He feels like he’s paid into the system,” Wilson said……

Is ‘stupid lawyer’ a redundancy? Or is this SOB deliberately insulting us all? By this reasoning, each of us who pays ANY taxes should qualify for the bennies this turd Fick is receiving.

      What insanity!

  8. Mithrandir says:

    THE SPEED OF GOVERNMENT

This is exactly why the federal government should not be feeding people! Federal food programs at public schools?–ridiculous!
It’s the states’ responsibility to feed their own people, if they decide public money will be used this way.

Another example of a feel-good system trying to help people, but screwing all of us in the process.
