Massa Forced Out Over Obama-Care Vote

From the Rochester, New York ABC affiliate 13WHAM:

Massa Fires Back: Breaking Down His Claims

Reported by: Evan Dawson
March 8, 2010

In a blaze of fury and resentment [sic], Congressman Eric Massa (D-29) claimed he was targeted by his own party for opposing the current health care bill. He claimed he was set up as payback. He claims that the language he had used is not much different than White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel or many other lawmakers.

All of this, and he’s still going to resign.

First, let’s start with the health issues. Massa is a cancer survivor and last week he said that he recently had a cancer flare-up, though he is not currently suffering from cancer. That health scare convinced Massa that he should retire when his term is up at the end of this year.

His health issues have nothing to do with his resignation. That’s not an opinion. Massa acknowledges that he is resigning because he didn’t want his family to endure a Congressional Ethics investigation.

You can listen to his 90-minute radio tirade [sic] by clicking right here. [Link currently not working.]

The Congressman apparently decided that he had become targeted and he wanted to let it out. He ripped Democrats. He ripped Republicans. He ripped tea partiers. He ripped voters who donated money to him. He ripped Bob Lonsberry. He ripped the White House.

But Massa has yet to take hard questions from news reporters on any of these issues. We hope he will do so today. Reporter Sean Carroll has been doing outstanding work on this story.

So let’s get to the meat of what Massa said.

He describes the incident that could be grounds for sexual harassment.

Massa says it happened a few months ago after a wedding. He and his male staff were sitting around, late at night, drinking. When a bridesmaid walked by, a male staffer implied that Massa should attempt to hook up with the woman. Massa says he responded by tusseling [sic] the male staffer’s hair and then saying, "Well, what I really ought to be doing is f—ing you."

Since this story broke last week, Massa has been conflating "salty language" with this incident. But the incident he describes is not simply "salty language." Most employers have strict language about making sexual remarks or overtones toward staff members, male or female. Massa continues to say that he used salty and embarrassing language and he admits he was wrong to do so. He also says that this is the only incident he can think of that would come out of an Ethics investigation.

If this is the only incident that could come out, and he’s willing to talk about it publicly, why not stay in office and let the House investigate? There’s nothing else to find, right? Well, Massa says it would still be too painful for his family.

Again, this is presumably a news report, not an editorial.

Massa says Democratic leaders need votes for health care reform and he was pushed out.

It’s not clear how many votes House Dems currently have for health care. Certainly the vote could be close. But there is no evidence that the House is trying to force resignations of other Dems who oppose the current bill. It’s also worth noting that Massa is not taking a conservative position on health care reform; he wants a single-payer system, which is a much more progressive solution and entails much bigger government.

It is also worth noting that this report is heavily spinning a defense for the White House.

Among other details this article leaves out, is the fact that Mr. Massa, who represents a conservative district, has repeatedly claimed he opposes Obama-care because it is much too costly.

Massa says Fox News will have to educate the country about the Dems’ plans to shove health care down the nation’s throat.

Which somehow sounds like Mr. Massa is taking a conservative position.

We’ll keep working hard locally to provide thorough coverage, too.

Massa says numerous voters were upset with him for opposing the current reform bill… But then says that Americans don’t support the current reform bill.

In an apparent effort to describe his independence, Massa described hearing from constituents who are angry that they supported him, only to have him go against the current health care bill. He says that no one can own his vote. He says all of these voters are upset because they thought he would just go along with the party.

But then he says that Americans don’t want this bill. He cites polls showing how unpopular it is. Which reminds us…

Last year Massa got in some trouble for saying it’s important to ignore polls and do what’s right.

When Massa famously said he would "vote against the interests of his constituents," the context indicated that he meant he would vote against their desires if he thought it was in their best interest. In other words, he’d ignore the polls and vote in an unpopular way if he thought it was the right thing to do.

Now, it seems, he wants to cite polls as a reason for opposing the current bill.

In case there was still any doubt about whether this is an objective news piece or not.

Massa says he’s always been a fighter… but he won’t fight to stay in Congress.

During his campaigns, Massa has repeatedly touted his role as a fighter, a non-conformist, a tough and strong leader. His supporters might wonder: If he’s a fighter, and he thinks he was done wrong, and he cares about the coming health care vote, why not fight? We don’t know exactly, other than the Congressman’s insistence that an Ethics investigation would be too rough on his family. Remember, it’s not about health. He planned to retire at the end of this year, not now, so the issue is the Ethics investigation

If you can manage to hack through all of the argumentation from the supposedly objective news reporter here, you can readily see that Mr. Massa is claiming that the Democrat party bosses have forced him to resign because of his opposition to ‘healthcare reform.’

Which, is just as we had cynically suspected when the news of Mr. Massa’s abrupt resignation first surfaced.

Even so, this article is some bizarre reportage. When have you ever seen a news outlet undercut their own scoop?

But agenda trumps all with our watchdog media. Even on the local scale.

(We will try to post a working link to Mr. Massa’s remarks, as soon as it becomes available. And again, if you have a national scoop, wouldn’t you make sure your links work?)

Fox News has more quotes from Mr. Massa’s interview:

Massa Details ‘Salty’ Comment That Led to Resignation, Slams Dem Leaders

March 8, 2010

… Speaking on his local radio show on WKPQ-FM, he accused House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of lying and the Democratic Party of pushing him out of Congress over sexual harassment allegations in order to pass health care reform…

On Sunday, the first-term congressman claimed that the "forces that be" orchestrated a character assassination against him to push him out for the sake of the health care bill.

"Mine is now the deciding vote on the health care bill and this administration and this House leadership have said, quote-unquote, they will stop at nothing to pass this health care bill, and now they’ve gotten rid of me and it will pass. You connect the dots," Massa said.

"The future of the Democratic Party rests on passing this health care bill. They can get anyone to say anything about me concerning anything at all and in fact they did."

We will provide more quotes as they become available.

They’ve got the goods on this pervert. You just haven’t seen them yet.

If they didn’t have him dead to rights, he would stay in Congress just to stick his thumb in the Witch’s eye.

  2. U NO HOO says:

I never said nothing to nobody, not once , not never, ever. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Anyone got Larry Craig’s phone number?

  3. wardmama4 says:

This is just his passing shot to let the truth out of the bag – he is resigning because he was threatened – because he wants to vote NO. Look at the DNC – Jefferson, Hastings, Geithner, Rangel, Frank – all a bunch of ‘ethically’ challenged representatives – yet supported by the DNC. This incident is about and will always be about Massa’s NO vote. Now this also makes one wonder about the other NO Dems – are they scared to death now, more of Pelosi, Reid & Obama rather than their constituents? As we all know, no one is perfect – who is the next one to be ‘outed’ for their sin of a NO vote.

We The People should email Massa and tell him to keep up the good fight – and to keep voting NO. It is going to be the only way for the DNC to learn – you work for the will of the people you represent not the Party. Funny how their bribes, consessions, cheats and now threats are always managing to get out – even with the msm on their side.

Makes one have to wonder if the real reason that this Obamacare has not passed is the American people do not want it – never have and never will? Stay strong NO Dems – America needs you to fight the good fight and to stand up for the Constitution and We The People.

Plummet those House & Senate numbers – Just like the Congressional & Presidential approval numbers – lets shoot for single digits – just to make a point – NO means NO.

And I bet Obama won’t even honor his promise to make this the last run of Obamacare. He just can’t face it at all – he is failing in everything – even his ‘legacy’.

Years ago I wanted to be a fly on the wall in the midst of the meltdown of the Clinton Presidency – the Clintons are pikers compared to this loser – I would love to be able to actually see this guy – when there are no cameras, when there is no one around – he must be so angry right now.

I also hear he is still smoking – isn’t that another one of his promises broken?

  4. JohnMG says:

…..”I also hear he is still smoking…..”

Though I have my doubts we will prevail and defeat this abominable piece of proposed legislation, I hope Obama’s ass gets spanked so hard that he’s still smoking a year from now.

  5. Reality Bytes says:

First Patterson now Massa. Democrats eating their own. Facinating!

  6. freelancer says:

I believe Massa is mostly telling the truth about the situation. Anger can breed embelishment but the essentials of his version of being ousted because he was a probable no vote on HC sound like what we have come to expect from the lying members of this ‘progressive’ administration. I can easily understand why he would reject an ethics investigation as it would be no more honest than anything else democrats do. What is happening with Massa has to have an impact on any recalcitrant congress person regarding not only the HC bill, but anything else that one of them might want to object to. Members can choose carrott or stick, punishment or reward, stay or go, whatever way enforcement can be brought about, but this administration will have its way come hell or high water or total destruction of this Republic. Democrats in general and elected representatives in particular would do well to stand up against this monstrosity HC government takeover and live as free agents. Or they can accept this Massa example of personal destruction as potentially threating to any one of them. Members must be wondering, and worrying, who will be next?

  7. Gil says:

Apparently the entire beltway is in fear and trepidation at the fact that Glenn Beck is having Massa on his program tomorrow for the full hour to expose this scandal to the light of day. There should be a lot of quotes worth noting there.. and a lot of truth which you so meticulously have ferreted out, Steve – only said completely and candidly for millions of viewers to see. Thanks for the great work you do Steve in bringing this to the attention of us viewers, and the great comments all of you contribute. I lurk, but appreciate all that you all do.

  8. BigOil says:

This Massa character is pure comic gold. It is nice to see a democrat turning on his marxist brothers for a change. Our vaunted media is usually only interested in covering maverick republicans that trash conservatives.

His description of Obama’s thug tactics is not a mystery to any of us here. However, Beck’s wide appeal will expose many more casual followers of politics to what is actually behind Barry’s cheshire cat smile.

  9. canary says:

Massa claims Enamuel was stark naked in the Congressional gym, and got up close to Massa, and did the Obama finger jab, into Massa’s chest.

  10. Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

I just want to hear Obama say “Massa”. (Sorry I couldn’t resist.)

  11. proreason says:

The enforcers got to this Massa guy in between the Beck radio interview and the TV interview.

    They probably threatened his kids.

  12. freelancer says:

I believe proreason is right. Massa did such a complete revision of his resignation story that he left no doubt in my mind that he was fighting to save himself and his family from whatever consequences he was threatened with if he told the truth on Beck’s show. Massa all but took the fifth to avoid any discussion about the democrat Obama administration. The only thing he held on to was the Rahm confrontation in the shower and then said he even did not belive what he had said about Rahm and his kids and substituted his own children as a more likely target for Rahm to attack. Beck was honest and acted in good faith in giving Massa a forum to air his charges against the administration and it’s lackeys. Massa was dishonest and true democrat in going through with the interview knowing that he was not going to fullfill his end of the deal.

  13. Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

I disagree that anyone “got” to Massa. I’ve thought he was a typical lib flake trying to cover his ass since this whole thing started. I truly think he just doesn’t want to have to explain to the wife and kids that he’s queer as a football bat.

    • proreason says:

Something caused him to change his story.

He was singing like a canary to Beck on Monday’s radio show, and a day later was a fuzzy bear administration advocate.

      One of two things happened:
      a) they showed him the evidence of his perversion, which is no doubt irrefutable
      b) they threatened somebody close to him

      Probably both.

  14. GL0120 says:

The guy’s three bucks and change, no doubt about it.
It’s odd that he let a little thing like harassing other men force him out. If that was a problem, Bawney Fwank would’ve been gone years ago.
Maybe Bawney propositioned him and got turned down?
His talking about a “Tickle Party” with a bunch of guys is hilarious. We’re paying these clowns to govern the country and they’re having tickle parties.
He mentioned that things are being taken out of context; call it what you will but a “Tickle Party” with five guys is a queer orgy by any other name.
Not that it matters, the guy’s doing what dems are pros at – lying through his teeth.
His only reason for not voting for the bill was that it wasn’t left wing enough to satisfy him.

    • Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

“Maybe Bawney propositioned him and got turned down?”

I don’t know about that but I will bet that Bawney has something to do with the lack of shower curtains in the Congressional gym!
