Maxine Waters Is Hit With Ethics Charges

From a dejected New York Times:

Ethics Trial Expected for California Congresswoman

July 30, 2010

WASHINGTON — Representative Maxine Waters, Democrat of California, will face charges of misusing her office and is expected to contest the claims in a House trial, the second powerful House Democrat to opt for such a public airing in recent days, Congressional officials said Friday.

A House ethics subcommittee has charged Ms. Waters, 71, a 10-term congresswoman, in a case involving communications that she had with the top executive of a bank that her husband owned stock in while it was applying for a federal bailout in 2008, two House officials said.

Translation from spin-speak to English: Ms. Waters got caught helping her husband’s bank get bailout money it wasn’t qualified to receive.

Charges are expected to be announced next week, several Congressional officials said, speaking only on the condition of anonymity because the proceedings remained confidential. Details of the specific accusations of wrongdoing were not available Friday evening.

The expected trial, coming just after the start of a similar proceeding on Thursday for Representative Charles B. Rangel of New York, would be a modern-day precedent for the House, Congressional officials said. At no time in at least the last two decades have two sitting House members faced a public hearing detailing allegations against them.

It would also be an embarrassment for the Congressional Black Caucus. Ms. Waters and Mr. Rangel are two of its most revered and long-standing members, and both have spent decades as key leaders in banking and financial services issues in the House…

Would it be too cynical to suggest that the Democrats may be hoping to whip up an important part of their constituency this way?

Ms. Waters, at the time the investigation by the House ethics panel began last fall, was accused of intervening on behalf of OneUnited, a Boston-based bank. The Times reported last year that Ms. Waters called Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. in 2008, as the economy was in a free fall, to ask him to host a special meeting with executives from black-owned banks…

What Mr. Paulson did not know at the time was that Ms. Waters’s husband, Sidney Williams, owned stock in and had served on the board of OneUnited, whose chief executive turned the Treasury headquarters meeting into a special appeal for bailout assistance. The executive of the institution, one of the nation’s largest black-owned banks, asked for $50 million in federal aid, The Times reported.

After articles on the case by The Times and The Wall Street Journal, the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent watchdog agency, began an inquiry.

The office referred the matter to the ethics committee, which charged the subcommittee with opening an examination of Ms. Waters’s activities…

Because Ms. Waters — like Mr. Rangel — has refused to agree to a proposed settlement, the case is headed toward a House ethics trial, officials said. “She is fighting it,” one House official said Friday.

As in the case of Mr. Rangel, Ms. Waters simply cannot believe that the House ethics committee will ever do anything serious to her.

And, like Rangel, she is almost certainly correct.

    Thank you soooooo much Max!
This should make for a interesting, must see T.V. event.

I thought it was only the evil, right wingers who wanted the rich to get richer.

Two in two days……….”Load that bus.”

Well, at least they can ride up front.

(Sorry…..sorry…but geez, don’t feed me straight lines)

Seriously, after pondering this for most of the day off and on, it could appear that they are “sacrificing” their own in order to appear vigilant. One would have to be brain-dead to believe it though (Naturally, there are plenty who are).

For me, it’s too little, too late and but a ripple in the ocean that is socialist corruption and the whole mechanism feeding on itself and satisfying this agenda and that rather than the elected officers doing their jobs.

The nation’s government has been not-at-all-well for some time. It has succumbed to all of human frailty and failure. No one person seems to hold the ideals and the truths of framework of this nation up any more.

It can rise again but in all of human history, it is mighty hard to halt the collapse of an existing system. I hope it finds new life and, as they say, the pendulum swings back the other way because right now, it’s knocking a gaping hole in the left side of the clock.

Also note the timing of the Rangel and Waters cases. They have been well-known for quite some time. But it does smack of deflection and distraction that they are being investigated now. That is, the boy who sits in the president’s chair’s popularity is tanking and he is getting more exposure as being “a smart-ass kid with a cool hat” instead of Superman (remember that picture?).

Clearly, he is losing ground. It doesn’t matter how the insane-stream media tries to spin it or protect him, he is freefalling without a parachute and it’s delightful.

But, also sad. In order for this nation to rise up again and rebuild from the ashes that are this regime, we have to endure the full exposure of what happens when a purely dysfunctional and emotionally damaged socialist is elected.

Look for a lot more playing of the race card, ad hominem arguments from the left, more visceral and violent attacks against the conservatives in the months to come.

As most Americans are well aware, these two are just the tip of the iceberg and there’s plenty more where they came from.

Poor Maxine, just the latest to be thrown under the bus.

  3. proreason says:

Charlie Rangel, for all his obvious faults, is a hard guy to dislike. Besides, he served honorably and courageously in Korea a long time ago.

But Maxine….what a detestable scumt. This woman is the absolute poster child for the Black Caucus.

Dumb as a post, too dumb to even pretend to hide her tracks….and damn proud of it.

Ooh, Steve, way out ahead as usual.

I’ll believe these ethics inquiries are serious when they find their way to Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Bahney Fwankths.

Still, even if all these hypocrites limp their way into November, nothing kills voter enthusiasm faster than these types of revelations. Couple it with the regime’s continuing radical dictatorialism and well – boom.

Is there a way for the Country Class to declare Marshall Law on the Ruling Class? Or would it just be a revolution?

    • “I’ll believe these ethics inquiries are serious when they find their way to Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Bahney Fwankths.”

indeed.. My guess is they may well be pressured to do so.. the cherry on the top of the ethics investigations however would be resulting with Pelosi in chains, and doing 20 years hard labor.

    MAXINE (Donald Fagan, Nightfly)

    Some say that we’re reckless
They say we’re much too young
Tell us to stop before we’ve begun
We’ve got to hold out till graduation
    Try to hang on Maxine

    While the world is sleeping
    We meet at Lincoln Mall
Talk about life the meaning of it all
Try to make sense of the suburban sprawl
    Try to hang on Maxine

Mexico City is like another world
    Nice this year they say
    You’ll be my senorita
    In jeans and pearls
But first let’s get off this highway

    We’ll move up to Manhattan
And fill the place with friends
Drive to the coast and drive right back again
One day we’ll wake up, make love but ’til then
    Try to hang on Maxine

what took so long. Meanwhile, she’s been allowed to threaten to Socialize America. Maxine Waters will say “the devil made me do it. he tricked me” and ask for forgiveness.

  7. Tater Salad says:

Looks like “The Swamp” water is rising! This is typical of Democrts……………hypocrites!

  8. oldpuppydixie says:

The race card will get nationwide play in this one. Rangel and Waters are thieves, liars and bums. But the MSM will, as usual, make the “are they being persecuted because they’re BLACK” screed come to life in order to whip up the dem voter base for November. Think about it. Isn’t it interesting that two perpetual congressional criminals–both black–are suddenly facing TRIAL just before an election which could spell doom for their party/and its leftist agenda? Coincidences DO NOT HAPPEN in DC! This has been contrived for a purpose. And you can BET the national media has all of its talking points/instructions ready and waiting.
