Mayor Bloomberg Now Wants To Ban Styrofoam

From Reuters:

New York mayor seeks to ban Styrofoam

By Edith Honan | February 13, 2013

NEW YORK (Reuters) – New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will propose a ban on Styrofoam, the substance commonly used for take-out food containers that is almost impossible to recycle.

The mayor who has already targeted fat, sugar and salt in the city will turn to extruded polystyrene foam, saying it clogs up landfills, does not biodegrade and might harm human health.

Just think how many years could you get in New York City for getting caught with a ‘Big Gulp’ full of sugar and salt and transfats in a Styrofoam cup.

Bloomberg will raise the proposal in his final State of the City speech on Thursday…

Apparently, all of New York City’s other problems have been solved.

Bloomberg in his 12th year as mayor

Despite New York City’s strict ‘term limits’ laws.

[H]as made public health and sustainability hallmarks of his three terms in office, and he has taken aim repeatedly at the fast-food industry – most recently in his controversial plan to bar the sale of large portions of sugary soda, which goes into effect next month…

Despite so many people saying it would never happen.

Styrofoam, he says, should go the way of lead-based paint, which the city banned from residential use in 1960. An estimated 20,000 tons of Styrofoam enter the city’s waste stream each year, and it can add an estimated $20 per ton to the cost of recycling because it needs to be removed from the recycling stream, the city said.

"After all, we can live without it. We may live longer without it. And the doggie bag will survive just fine," the text of Bloomberg’s speech says…

The plan was [sic] likely to meet opposition from small businesses, since alternatives to Styrofoam tend to cost between two and five times as much.

So what? Bloomberg is loaded. What does he care?

Describing Bloomberg as a despicable twit is just a beginning; the arrogance of this tyrant is unmeasurable.

    • “If you can MAKE IT HERE, you’ll make it ANY-WHERE!” the song says. What other city on earth would want Nanny Bloomberg? How does he avoid accountability and consequences?

What happened to the Big Apple, the City That Never Sleeps? It used to be true that the very best of the best went there to succeed and excel. Now New York is plagued with a petty tyrant, and an inept one at that.

Rudy Giuliani was the epitome of the great New Yorker. Sure, he had his excesses, but compared to all the other pygmies and frauds of the world, he was superb.

I’ve never lived in New York, but have visited many times. It’s a great city, in spite of the horrible leadership. It’s the U.S. in a nutshell.

Styrene (styrofoam), in the presence of UV light, breaks down in a matter of weeks. It breaks down even faster when UV light and ozone are present.
Buried in a landfill, it can take up to a decade to break down (not quite the thousands of years enviro nazis talk about at length).

Styrene isn’t just for take-out food and beverage containers. It is used where fiberglass insulation won’t work (insulating foundations). It is used in the manufacture of wind turbines (green energy). It is also a key component in SB rubber which reduces the amount of natural rubber we use and when used in tires it improves gas mileage.

So ban away, we’ll deal with the unintended consequences later.

…..”So what? Bloomberg is loaded. What does he care?…….”

Yep, I’d say so. Anyone who is sober and in full possession of his faculties wouldn’t possibly issue such statements.

So it’s either drugs or alcohol.

I always thought that NYC was the model for Gotham City of Batman fame.

So….will the caped crusader have to modify the bat-computer to detect when “loyal citizens” have styrofoam? Or a 32 oz Big Gulp?

I have a small vacation dream….which is to drive to NYC….park somewhere near Central Park, break out my cooler of (diet) orange drinks and pour them into (styrofoam) a 32 oz drink cup and walk around the park with it…intentionally walking past policemen. Or, people doing yoga because they might be the most likely to be of the drooling masses who obey Doomberg’s edicts.

Yup….just walkin’ around….drinkin’ my 32 oz diet soda. From a styrofoam cup I am. Whatcha gonna do?

    Arbeit Macht Frei

    Big Brother……

    It’s gone way past sublime.
