Mayor De Blasio Ends NYC’s Monitoring Of Muslims

From the Associated Press:

New York police end Muslim surveillance program

By JAKE PEARSON and TOM HAYS | April 15, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) — A special New York Police Department unit that sparked controversy by tracking the daily lives of Muslims in an effort to detect terror threats has been disbanded, police officials said Tuesday.

How wonderful that this joyous news has come out on the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings! Which might have been prevented with more aggressive monitoring of the Boston ‘Muslim community.’

NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis confirmed that detectives assigned to the unit had been transferred to other duties within the department’s Intelligence Division.

Now that the NYPD no longer ‘stop and frisk,’ and no longer arrest anyone for drugs or loitering, you have to wonder why they need so many cops?

An ongoing review of the division by new Police Commissioner William Bratton found that the same information collected by the unit could be better collected through direct contact with community groups, officials said.

Yes, all the police have to do is ask the local Imams if they know of any terrorist plots. And they will tell them. That is a brilliant plan.

In a statement, Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, called the move "a critical step forward in easing tensions between the police and the communities they serve, so that our cops and our citizens can help one another go after the real bad guys." …

Instead of those phony bad guys, the Muslim terrorists. The real bad guys are people who make more money than they should.

After a series of stories by The Associated Press detailing the extent of the NYPD’s surveillance of Muslims, two civil rights lawsuits were filed challenging the activities as unconstitutional because they focused on people’s religion, national origin and race…

Naturally, the Associated Press won a Pulitzer Prize for their noble effort.

But you have to think that the New York Times was pea green with envy at the AP beating them to the punch in killing off another anti-terrorist program.

Linda Sarsour, the executive director of the Arab American Association of New York… applauded the decision but said there’s still concern about the police use of informants to infiltrate mosques without specific evidence of crime.

"This was definitely a part of the big puzzle that we’re trying to get dismantled," Sarsour said. But, she added, "This doesn’t necessarily prove to us yet that these very problematic practices are going to end." …

No, the Muslim activists won’t be happy until they are sacrosanct and untouchable. Which, come to think of it, they already are.

New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman hailed the decision…

Because, after all, New Yorkers don’t have the civil right to live without fear of terrorists. Or the civil right to have police police dangerous groups.
