Ray Nagin Buys Dallas House – Just In Case

Here’s something reported Saturday by the New Orleans Times-Picayune which seems to have slipped by relatively unnoticed.

It’s mentioned in passing in the setup to an interview the T-P did with the ever gracious Mayor Nagin:

Mayor Nagin speaks out

In a stark reminder of how drastically Hurricane Katrina has impacted the lives of New Orleanians,Mayor Ray Nagin has purchased a home for his family in Dallas and enrolled his young daughter in school there.

Nagin, who spoke with The Times-Picayune by telephone from Dallas, where he has been since Wednesday, said he planned to return to New Orleans on Saturday. He said he will remain in the Crescent City while his family lives for the next six months in Dallas, making occasional visits to his family when possible.

Purchased a home? Why didn’t he just rent a place? Sounds like Hizzoner is making long term plans.

Nagin went on to give his usual obscenity-laced spiel in the interview, including such well polished gems as:

“This is ridiculous,” he said. “I mean, this is America. How can we have a state with an $18 billion budget and a federal government with an I don’t know how many trillion dollar budget, and they can’t get a few thousand people onto buses? I don’t get that.

“Definitely class, and the more I think about it, definitely race played into this,” he said… “ Let’s call a spade a spade…”

I’m sure by now we have all seen the photographs of the hundreds of buses Mayor Nagin had at his disposal. A couple hundred of which were a parked less than a mile and a half from the Superdome.

Maybe it’s not a bad idea for Nagin to plan to get out of town, after all. Too bad he never showed such foresight for his fellow citizens, though.
