McCaskill Owes $287K Taxes On Plane

From the Politico:

McCaskill will sell ‘the damn plane’

Sen. Claire McCaskill is selling the personal plane that has caused her turbulence in recent weeks after POLITICO revealed she used taxpayer money to cover the cost of political travel.

The first-term Democrat said she was very happy she was able to convince her husband to "sell the damn plane."

In a conference call Monday afternoon, McCaskill revealed that after her own review of the plane’s records, she had not paid personal property taxes on the aircraft over the past four years.

"I have discovered that the personal property taxes on the plane have not been paid. There should have been a reporting to the county of the existence of this plane. There are people I could blame for this, but I know better. I take full responsibility," McCaskill said to reporters, after revealing she had conducted her own audit of all 89 flights she had taken.

"This was a mistake, It should have been reported in Missouri.  It will be paid in Missouri today," she said.

If Ms. McCaskill is taking full responsibility, shouldn’t she go to jail – like the rest of us would if we failed to pay almost $300,000 in taxes?

McCaskill said she would be sending a check for $287,273 to St. Louis County Monday for the back taxes she owed between 2007 and 2010.

She is not even going to be slapped with any late penalties or fines? By the way, that must be some plane.

She also said she had campaign lawyers looking into the flights to determine if any more in-kind contributions needed to be reported to be in compliance.

Asked if this would hurt her reelection bid, McCaskill replied, "I don’t know, I’ve tried to handle this like I handle anything else," citing her advocacy for transparency and accountability in Congress.

Maybe that is the problem.

McCaskill expressed remorse and contrition throughout the half hour conference call and said the entire episode has made her "sick to her stomach."

But she stressed that she was not trying to evade taxes and that the failure to register the plane in Missouri was a "mistake."

We need to remember this excuse for our next audit. But then again, we probably wouldn’t get away with it. We aren’t Democrat politicians. We have to pay our taxes.

By the way, as Fox News has noted:

McCaskill recently co-sponsored a bill in the Senate that would send pink slips to federal employees who are found to have unpaid taxes, a measure Republicans also highlighted Monday, calling the Democrat a hypocrite. But a McCaskill aide said that was not a fair attack. "Those are people who knowingly have not paid their taxes and have refused to own up to it and to make that right," an aide told Fox. "She didn’t knowingly do this. This is a situation where a mistake was made. As soon as she found out…she made it right," the aide told Fox.

That’s right. She paid her taxes just as soon as she was caught.

Just like a good Democrat.

Jeez, it must be nice to be a lib. No matter how many are caught cheating on their taxes and no matter how much they owe, they always seem to have enough cash lying around to pay the bill.

  2. Chuckk says:

I know someone who went to jail for 1 year for not paying income taxes on about $40,000. I guess some people are more equal than others.

  3. Right of the People says:

I can see I’ve been doing this all wrong and paying my taxes on time. If you put a D in front of your name you don’t have to pay taxes at all just like Little Timmy over to the Treasury and half the Dimocrap Senators and Representative.

    It’s just hit me !!

My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day.

He has his food prepared for him. He can eat whenever he wants, 24/7/365.

His meals are provided at no cost to him.

He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year if any medical needs arise.

For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him.

He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up.

He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep.

He receives these accommodations absolutely free.

He is living like a King, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever.

All of his costs are picked up by others who go out and earn a living every day.

I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick in the head…….

    My dog is a Democrat!

    • proreason says:

Not enough evidence yet to prove he’s a Democrat.

Is he punishing you and driving you into poverty for providing his luxurious accomodations?

If so, THEN he is a Democrat.

    • Mae says:

A Democrat! Please, please, apologize to your dog for the insult! Especially since he provides loving companionship, unquestioning loyalty, has an apparent good disposition and would probably pick up your paper and your slippers if you asked. Respect!

    • JohnMG says:

      …..”My dog is a Democrat!……”

Impossible!! He’s too loyal, appreciative, and honest.

Big Surprise – once again a D who breaks a law that would send any of us to jail or ‘insist’ that an R resign immediately.

This is a HUGE reason that America is in it’s current state – what ever happened to Impeachment, Recall, Resignations, Trials and of course (tee hee hee) ethics investigations.

Must be nice to be above the law.

  6. BigOil says:

Anyone want to venture a guess what this porcine Democrat’s job was prior to ascending to the Senate? She was the MO state auditor. Which probably explains why she thought she could get away with tax evasion.

  7. Mae says:

Anyone who owns an aircraft, and I mean anyone, knows the tax rules and how you or your entity can be exempt from certain fees. No fine print here but an up-front consideration in purchasing and using any aircraft. She’s either crooked or stupid. Take your pick. Though she may be both.

  8. oldpuppydixie says:

Well gee whiz, important people like Claire shouldn’t really HAVE to pay taxes, should they? I mean, how could we possibly live without them!

  9. proreason says:

Goodness gracious. Claire was elected Senator in 2006, and we all know how busy senators are, what with transforming our nation and reforming health care and advising the president on his wars NCAA bracket picks.

Who wouldn’t have slipped up on a little thing like $287,273? Sure, ordinary people could live on that for 4 to 6 years, but hey, Claire is a SENATOR. That’s pocket change to her. Once she really gets her shakedown business going, she’ll pull that in in a week or less, easy. She’s probably forgotten stuff 10 times that amount anyway, and of course, if she is ever caught remembers them all of a sudden like, then she will deserve the same harsh treatment and embarrassment she is recieving for this little faux pas.

  10. canary says:

According to unofficial wikipedia it’s more than Dem Senator not paying taxes. It’s citizens paying for her airplane trips.

On March 16, 2011, McCaskill told reporters that she was “embarrassed” about revelations that her office had billed taxpayers for the senator’s use of a private airplane she co-owns with her husband and friends.

According to a government audit, the plane was used for ninety flights taken between Washington D.C. and her home in suburban St. Louis, as well as to numerous sites around the state of Missouri.

Politico.com had broken the story a week earlier. According to McCaskill’s senate office, all but one of the ninety flights in question were within senate rules. As soon as the story broke, Senator McCaskill sent a check for $88,000 to the U.S. Treasury to reimburse the government for the lost funds. [27] The Missouri Republican Party filed a formal complaint with the the Senate Ethics Committee on March 16.
