McConnell To Vote For ‘Cloture’ On Amnesty Bill

From the Weekly Standard:

McConnell to Vote for Cloture, Despite Reservations About Immigration Bill

By DANIEL HALPER | June 11, 2013

In a statement on the Senate floor this morning, Republican leader Mitch McConnell signaled he’d vote for cloture for the immigration bill. But he also suggested the bill needs to be amended.

It doesn’t need to be amended. It needs to be killed. Nipped in the bud.

"The Gang of Eight has done its work. Now it’s time for the Gang of 100 to do its work — for the entire Senate to have its say on this issue, and see if we can do something to improve the status quo. At the risk of stating the obvious, this bill has serious flaws," McConnell said, then suggesting he’d vote for cloture, the motion to proceed.

If it has such serious flaws, why allow it to proceed?

“I’ll vote to debate it and for the opportunity to amend it, but in the days ahead there will need to be major changes to this bill if it’s going to become law. These include, but are not limited to, the areas of border security, government benefits, and taxes." …

No matter what the bill says, these newly ‘legalized’ illegal aliens will get government benefits. And the border (including our flawed visa tracking) will not be secured. These things are already baked in.

[McConnell went on to say] “But let me be clear: doing nothing about a problem we all acknowledge isn’t a solution. It’s an avoidance strategy. And the longer we wait to have this debate, as difficult as it is, the harder it’ll be to solve the problem…

Why not try enforcing the laws we have? That is not doing nothing.

The one thing that is clear is that repeating the mistakes of the 1986 amnesty will not solve anything. Except the end of the Republican Party and the transformation of our country.

Meanwhile, we have this, via the Washington Examiner:

Schumer: New drones will let us see ‘every single person who crosses the border’

By Charlie Spiering | June 11, 2013

On the Senate floor this afternoon, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., boasted about legislation within the immigration reform bill that would secure the southern U.S. border better than any other point in the history of the United States.

“We will finally be able to see every single person crossing our border,” Schumer declared, highlighting the new security funding in the bill. “We’ll know where to send our 21,000 border patrol agents to go catch people.”

“[W]ith the drones we can see every single person who crosses the border day or night, and we can follow their paths so that they can be apprehended when they are 10, 20, 25 miles inland,” Schumer insisted…

Isn’t Chuck Schumer one of the people who used to scoff at the idea that we could round up all of the illegals in the country? And yet he thinks we can seal the borders so tight we will see anyone sneaking in?

Besides, even if our physical borders could be secured, at least 40% of our the illegal aliens in our country are here on over-stayed visas. No drones are going to find them.

And here is more from Sen. Schumer, via Breitbart:

Schumer: ‘Illegal Immigration Will Be a Thing of the Past’

By Matthew Boyle | June 11, 2013

After the U.S. Senate voted to pass the motion to proceed to floor debate on the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) claimed that this bill would solve illegal immigration and secure the border.

Which is exactly what he said in 1986.

“Illegal immigration will be a thing of the past,” Schumer said on the Senate floor, celebrating the passage of the motion to proceed.

He may be right. Because once we make sneaking into the country legal, the phrase ‘illegal immigration’ will no longer have any meaning.

Unfortunately, however, if amnesty is enacted, it also means the United States as we know it, is also going to become ‘a thing of the past.’
