Medicare Could Cover ‘Sex Change’ Operations

From the Washington Examiner:

In shift, Medicare would pay for sex-change operations

By Paul Bedard | March 29, 2013

For the first time since 1981, when it dubbed sex-change operations "experimental," Medicare has opened the door to covering transexual operations, adding to the growing list of operations that would be allowed under Obamacare.

Acting on a new request, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said it is starting a new analysis that could lift the spending ban for sex-change operations with a goal of making a decision two days after Christmas and on the eve of Obamacare kicking in Jan. 1.

What a wonderful Christmas gift.

And the Republicans had better not complain about this. Or they will risk losing the transgender vote.

A 30-day public comment period just opened on the proposed "National Coverage Determination."

"Surgical Treatment for Gender Identity Disorder, formerly referred to as transsexual surgery in 140.3, is currently noncovered under the Medicare Part A and Part B programs. The existing policy, which became effective in 1981, states that transsexual surgery is considered experimental," said the notice just posted on the CMS.gov site.

"Please note that we are making an administrative change to the NCD title under this reconsideration to reflect current medical terminology. The new title for Section 140.3 will be Surgical Treatment for Gender Identity Disorder," it adds.

Yes, "Gender Identity Disorder" (GID) sounds so much nicer than sex change operation.

The National Center for Transgender Equality is among those pushing for the changes.

In supporting letters to CMS, one of the proponents claims that the experimental status of sex-change operations has long passed and that studies confirm it works. "These medical procedures and treatment protocols are not experimental: decades of both clinical experience and medical research show they are essential to achieving well-being for the transsexual patient," said the letter.

A second letter called the federal policy discriminatory, and added that failure to get the operation by those who needed can cause death. "The net effect is a failure to treat a treatable disorder which in many cases leads to death. The discrimination (is) clearly un-American," added the letter.

Of course, being denied a sex change operation must be life-threatening. What could be more natural?

But we are a little surprised that the supporters of this haven’t gotten around to claiming that being physically the sex you would like is a civil right. But they will no doubt get to that.

  1. This is clearly an attempt to crash the whole system. Sex change operations are very expensive, and Medicare is already broke. This is malicious beyond words, deliberately designed to ruin our health care system.

Prisoners in the US are winning lawsuits and taxpayers paying for these changes.

I think it’s wrong for Medicare or Insurance to be burdened with this.

There are people with more crippling and deliberating mental disorders that should have priority.

Perhaps a formula of tests should be done before individuals are able to start hormone treatment, women growing beards, etc. and people should be examined as they are before medicine starts the changes. Scrap all of it.

See how the “it’s are in child bearing, and nip it in the bud. if a woman can not get pregnant, but only able to get another woman (or man “cough’) pregnant then there may be some physical proof the woman is really a man.

A way for free plastic surgery will only take a female or male, going to a shrink saying they perceive their lips not fat enough, or a fetish about their nose or ears, etc. simply have to tell a doctor they are ready to kill themselves if they don’t get free cosmetic surgery.

It’s a dam shame that our military vets will have to go the back of the line to get burn graphs, fake legs and arms and such to make the whole. It’s dam shame and we need attorneys to nip this
selfishness in the bud that to change their sex. If a person is truly born with two sexual organs than perhaps they should have their thing cut off and keep their hole, or close their hole and keep their thing. And perhaps some kind of cream like they use for warts to remove their breast.

But, by God when you think of people in so many more dire medical conditions than these selfish people obcessed with sex is a crying shame. They should just find someone that loves them for who they are. They should just get over it and war a fake mustache no different than a taupe or miracle bra, and use their own money to pay for it.

It seems to me that these “sufferers” of “Gender Identity Disorder” have a major mental disorder and are in need of a psychotherapist not a surgeon. And…isn’t Medicare for the elderly? If you aren’t sure of your gender by 65 then you have bigger problems than GID.

I’ll agree with them on one point. These people are SICK!!!

I’m pretty sure if you collect social security disability then you can enroll in medicare regardless of the age you actually are.

It’s sad that I expected this crap to happen eventually. Even Massachusetts is getting it crammed down their throats that they have to cover the surgery and meds for a guy/woman convicted of murdering his wife. It is just more waste of tax payer dollars. How soon until the feds mandate medicaid covers this surgery along with anything else free under some new ruling from the obama care bureau?

  4. I blame Republican Policy Makers for this. The extra “X” chromosome they carry around is infecting others to the point men want to become like Republican politicians … make themselves (female kittens, and starts with the letter “P”)
