‘Principle’ Causes SD’s Switch Back To Obama

From a delighted New York Times:

Former state and national Democratic Party Chairman Joe Andrew announces at a news conference in Indianapolis, Thursday, May 1, 2008 that he has switched his allegiance to Barack Obama and is encouraging fellow Democrats to ‘heal the rift in our party’ and unite behind the Illinois senator.

Andrew Explains Switch to Obama

Calling the decision to endorse Senator Barack Obama “a very heartfelt and very personal decision for me,” Joe Andrew, who was the Democratic National Committee chairman and a former superdelegate for Hillary Rodham Clinton, is pledging his allegiance to the Obama camp

Mr. Andrew, an Indiana native, said that the Obama campaign had not asked him to change sides, but he is concerned that the long primary campaign is hurting the party. He pointed to public opinion polls showing supporters of Mrs. Clinton are becoming less likely to support Mr. Obama, and vice versa. He seemed to place most of the blame for the growing division among Democrats on Mrs. Clinton, saying that the actions of his “former candidate” are making it more difficult for Democrats to win in the fall.

“I’m calling on my all of my friends who are superdelegates to help heal the rift and unite behind Barack Obama,” he said.

He described Mr. Obama as having the right “tone, temperature, and tenacity” to be president.

What you see is a principled stand, which is frankly shocking,” he said, acknowledging that he had been a big player in the political gamesmanship that Mr. Obama has said he wants to move away from. “I’ve sparred with everyone from Lee Atwater to Karl Rove,” Mr. Andrew said.

Mr Andrews first made his decision known in a lengthy letter Thursday that described a kind of road-to-Damascus moment in which he cited his handling of two issues in recent days. He said Obama took a stand in opposing a summer gas tax holiday that both Mrs. Clinton and Senator John McCain support. And he said he was impressed with Mr. Obama’s handling of the controversy surrounding his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr

Bill Clinton appointed Mr. Andrew chairman of the D.N.C. in 1999, and he led the party through the disputed 2000 presidential race before stepping down in 2001. Mr. Andrew endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton last year on the day she declared her candidacy…

Mind you, this is not satire.

This brainiac thinks Mr. Obama has shown principle and mettle during the Wright “controversy.”

Democrats really are different.
