Michelle/SEIU’s Child Obesity Initiative

From ABC News:

Michelle Obama: ‘Let’s Move’ Initiative Battles Childhood Obesity

First Lady to Launch ‘Very Ambitious’ Campaign to End Childhood Obesity in One Generation

By LEE FERRAN

Feb. 9, 2010—Michelle Obama is formally announcing today what she called a "very ambitious" program to end the American plague of childhood obesity in a single generation.

"We want to eliminate this problem of childhood obesity in a generation. We want to get that done," the first lady told "Good Morning America’s" Robin Roberts in an exclusive morning television interview. "We want our kids to face a different and more optimistic future in terms of their lifespan."

The far-reaching, nationwide campaign called "Let’s Move" calls for myriad initiatives that target what Obama calls four key pillars: Getting parents more informed about nutrition and exercise, improving the quality of food in schools, making healthy foods more affordable and accessible for families, and focusing more on physical education.

"We all know the numbers," Obama said. "I mean, one in three kids are overweight or obese, and we’re spending $150 billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses. So we know this is a problem, and there’s a lot at stake." …

This morning, President Obama signed a presidential memorandum to create the first-ever federal task force to provide "optimal coordination" between private sector companies, not-for-profits, agencies within the government and other organizations to address the problem of childhood obesity.

"We think that this has enormous promise in improving the health of our children, in giving support to parents to make the kinds of healthy choices that oftentimes are very difficult in this kind of environment. And so I just want to say how proud I am of the first lady for her outstanding work," the president said, as she looked on.

The task force will be charged with coming up with a "long-term action plan" after an extensive review of all federal nutrition programs…

President Obama also plans to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, the first lady said, and is proposing a $10 billion budget increase — $1 billion a year for 10 years — to help provide nutritious school lunches to those who qualify…

Alas, we have finally figured out why Mrs. Obama chose this to be her issue.

It is a pet issue of the SEIU, the people who put her and her husband in the White House. And, of course, it is all part and parcel of the SEIU’s push for more money for their thug members through ‘healthcare reform.’

From the SEIU:

Tell Congress: Strengthen our Child Nutrition Programs

Successful, cost-effective child nutrition programs — school lunch and breakfast, child care and WIC, summer feeding and afterschool snacks and meals — play a critical role in helping children achieve access to quality nutrition, child care, and educational enrichment activities while improving their overall health, development, and school achievement.

But the programs are not reaching all those children who are eligible.  In addition, it is increasingly difficult for providers to meet these guidelines without additional resources.

A well-conceived, robustly-funded reauthorization bill would:

  • Reduce hunger and food insecurity in America. A recent USDA Report showed that one in every four children live in households struggling against hunger;
  • Help reduce childhood overweight and obesity;
  • Improve child nutrition and health, and enhance child development and school readiness;
  • Provide fair wages and health care for food service workers. Food service workers are often paid poverty wages with few benefits and no paid sick days.

Sign here and tell Congress that the child nutrition programs must receive the critical funding needed to support and improve the nutritional health and well-being of our children.

Indeed, the SEIU has even introduced an ad campaign for this – on January 20, 2010.

What a coincidence, huh?

    I’m willing to bet Micky O was a little chubber when she was little, she just has that look about her. Well, that and the look of pure evil.

    Of course they’re only concerned about the kids. Here, I’ll reorder their initiatives in their order of priority to the SEIU management team.

    #Provide fair wages and health care for food service workers. Food service workers are often paid poverty wages with few benefits and no paid sick days.*

    *(should have paid better attention in class)

    # Reduce hunger and food insecurity in America. A recent USDA Report showed that one in every four children live in households struggling against hunger;
    # Help reduce childhood overweight and obesity;
    # Improve child nutrition and health, and enhance child development and school readiness;

    There, that looks better.

      Some of Barack’s childhood photos show he was not a little waif, either. Wonder what his BMI was around 10 or 11?

    But, Obama said families were going hungry just a block away from him.

    Michelle’s new role title is a bit racist naming one class.
    Title is un-politically correct & in poor taste, as on a child it’s about the way they look, not the unhealthy aspect. So, it would have been better instead of
    choosing a minority of a minority, if she had just stuck with a group as a whole.
    Michelle Obama’s celebrity role, fashion vogue shoots, expensive custom clothes, and children slaving on the WH plantation to grow lettuce and peas, which is a poor reward for the still chubby little workers in the kitchen spending hours washing the toxic fertilizer off, did not work. Last thing children wanted to full fill Michelle’s sought outcome: go home and show your parents.
    She is too stupid to change the children’s school launches, as she is working with stupid ignorant teachers who now have more vending machines with harmful, cancer causing, nervous system affecting sugar-free soda, & candy to make money off of. The knew baked chips, add sugar to compensate for the lack of taste.

    INSTEAD OF VIRTUAL REALITY GAMES HOW ‘BOUT ACTUAL REALITY – GIVE A BALL & GLOVE & HAVE AT IT FOR CRYIN’ OUT LOUD.

    Listen I’m sorry if some kids have pant load tendancies but does that mean we have to sink more dough (pun) into another dopey gov’t program.

    For cryin’ out loud, government can’t even run a decent gambling operation & break even (e.g. Off Track Betting). Who looses money running a gambling joint?!!!!

    You guessed it – GUBMENT

    How long before we carbon taxed on our waste band size?

  7. U NO HOO says:

    How about when we’re in line at the Post Office at 2359 on 4/15 we have our kids weighed at the mail box and the mailman hands us a money order inversely proportional to our children’s weight?

    Just a suggestion from a guy I know who is in Mensa.

    Surely a Chicago lawyerette can work out the details like the hyperbolic function that relates $ to lbs.

  8. joeblough says:

    Under my plan …. food prices would necessarily skyrocket.

    Problem solved.

  9. TwilightZoned says:

    “…making healthy foods more affordable and accessible for families…”

    Oh, let me guess. It’s now healthy food redistribution. The poor now will get vouchers to Whole Foods stores.

    • Confucius says:

      I would enjoy watching the poor and the homeless hobnobbing with the nouveaux riche bourgeoisie at the local Whole Foods. Maybe they can give each other wine tips.

      This dream is close to becoming a reality, though. Here’s an article from the magazine named “flavor” (that I found at Whole Foods):

      Vouchers for Veggies

      Marian Burros
      February 4, 2010

      With names like Boston Bounty Bucks, Fresh Checks, and Double Dollars, programs at a few farmers markets across the country—including some in the Capital foodshed—offer economically vulnerable people a deal they cannot refuse: as much as $20 worth of fresh fruits and vegetables for $10. …

      As farmers markets spring up nationwide—there were 5,274 last year, double the number in 2000—the buzz that poor people cannot afford to shop at them grows louder.

      Those who run the markets don’t deny it. “We know sometimes the food is not as affordable,” said Bernadine Prince, co-director of the nine FreshFarm Markets in metropolitan Washington. …

      The double vouchers are available to anyone on food stamps, now known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), and to anyone who participates in the supplemental food program for women, infants, and children at nutritional risk (WIC). It is the latest effort to get people with limited incomes to shop at farmers markets. There are already programs that provide additional vouchers for fruits and vegetables to seniors eligible for food stamps and to WIC participants.

      So there you have it. Food stamps aren’t just for Doritos and a “forty” of Silver Thunder. They’re also for microgreens and environmentally-sustainable hamachi.

      Maybe John Edwards was right, and there really are two Americas–i.e. the poor and the rich who eat like royalty and the rest of us who eat off the McDollar McMenu. (Not that there’s anything wrong with a McChicken McNugget slathered with McKetcup.

      Yup! Just like the “right ” to health care, a nice home, a personal trainer,a nice car, a balanced meal, YUP, it’s all in there! Just ask any Harvard educated Constitutional lawyer/professor guy!

  12. MinnesotaRush says:

    Wow .. I thought the Dr.’s and the health insurers were overchargers and bandits!?!?

    Just think .. “”We all know the numbers,” Obama said. “I mean, one in three kids are overweight or obese, and we’re spending $150 billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses. So we know this is a problem, and there’s a lot at stake.”

    $150 billion a year!?!?!? Good gawd! They giving each of the little fatties a nutritionist and personal trainer?!?!?

    “Let them eat cake”, comes to mind.

  13. ptat says:

    For some reason, this ludicrous proposal (“making healthy foods more affordable and accessible”)by the big First Lady has brought out the best of my S&L friends! Hilarious!

  14. rocketman says:

    What kind of kids eat Armour hot dogs?
    Fat kids, skinny kids
    Even kids Obama knocks love hot dogs, Armour hot dogs
    The dogs kids love to bite.

    Every day, there is proof that liberals think the answer to everything is THE GOVERNMENT thereby insulting every single human in the nation because, 230+ years of self-reliance, hard work, dedication, honor and patriotism just doesn’t work.

    It’s not the government’s place to tell me to tell my kid to get out there and get some sunshine. It’s myresponsibility and mine alone. This “It takes a village” horses__t can go the way of Mutha Murtha and Dead Ted. These communal, socialist thoughts and their authors always think they know better and therefore have some right to tell you (us) what to do and…how to do it. They would love to decree that everyone attend a weekly seminar on child-rearing, diet, exercise, etc. Yet all that information is out there; Has been for a great many years and again, there’s always gramma.

    Family is core. NOT the state. So Mitchell (The Blimp) Obama….SHUT UP!
