From the New York Times:

Children in U.S. Are Eating Fewer Calories, Study Finds

By SABRINA TAVERNISE | February 21, 2013

American children consumed fewer calories in 2010 than they did a decade before, a new federal analysis shows. Health experts said the findings offered an encouraging sign that the epidemic of obesity might be easing, but cautioned that the magnitude of the decline was too small to move the needle much.

Translation: There has not been any decline or The Times would be shouting the statistics from the rooftops.

And while energy intake has not changed considerably for adults in recent years, fewer of their calories are coming from fast food, researchers said. Obesity rates for adults have plateaued after years of increases…

The results of the research on childhood consumption patterns, the only federal analysis of calorie trends among children in recent years, came as a surprise to researchers. For boys, calorie consumption declined by about 7 percent to 2,100 calories a day over the period of the analysis, from 1999 through 2010. For girls, it dropped by 4 percent to 1,755 calories a day…

National obesity rates for children have been flat in recent years, but some cities have reported modest declines.

So the obesity rate has been "flat in recent years." But some unnamed cities are reporting unspecified modest declines — that are not enough to affect the national average.

The new evidence of a lower calorie intake for children may also foreshadow a broader national shift, experts said.

“A harbinger of change is a good phrase,” said R. Bethene Ervin, a researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and one of the authors of the report…

How is any of this a harbinger of change? The national rate has been flat for years. Is it because that’s what you need to say to keep your federal job?

Meanwhile, we have this via the Weekly Standard:

White House Credits ‘Let’s Move’ for Halting and Reversing Childhood Obesity Trend

By JERYL BIER | February 20, 2013

Today the White House credited Michelle Obama’s three-year-old “Let’s Move” initiative with halting and even reversing a thirty year trend of increasing childhood obesity, a trend that has led to what the Centers for Disease Control has called an epidemic.

And never mind we were just told by the New York Times that "National obesity rates for children have been flat in recent years." (Something tells us that Times reporter will be getting a ‘furlough.’)

A press release from the Office of the First Lady announced details of a "two day nationwide tour" at the end of the month to celebrate the third anniversary of the program that promotes exercise and healthy eating habits to young people

We hope she gets an earful from the kids who have to eat the dreadful lunches she is demanding they eat.

The press release also included a short history of the program:

Mrs. Obama launched Let’s Move! on February 9, 2010 to unite the country around our kids’ health and create real support for families to live healthier lives. Since then parents, business leaders, educators, elected officials, military leaders, chefs, physicians, athletes, childcare providers, community and faith leaders and kids themselves have stepped up to improve the health of our nation’s children.

Thanks to these efforts, families now have access to more information to make healthier decisions for their children. Young people now have more opportunities for physical activity in their communities. Food in schools has been dramatically improved. More Americans now have access to healthy, affordable food closer to home. And the national childhood obesity rate has leveled off, and even declined in some cities and states.

What liars these people are. About everything.

Mooch is going on a tour celebrating the success of a program they recently cancelled?

Of course caloric intake is down. With millions of school kids in free lunch programs and unhealthful cuts to calories in school lunches (at no reduced cost I’m sure) What else would you expect to happen?
