Michelle Obama Gets A Make-Up Artist

From the New York Post:

GLAMOUR ‘FIRST’ — FULL-TIME MAKEUP ARTIST FOR MICHELLE

By ANNIE KARNI

April 12, 2009 — She’s America’s top "model."

Michelle Obama is the nation’s first first lady to add a full-time makeup artist to her traveling entourage, according to stylists who have worked with presidential wives over the past 16 years.

Makeup artist Ingrid Grimes-Miles, 49, helped create Obama’s signature look on her inaugural trip to Europe last week.

Grimes-Miles, who has been working with the first lady for six years, now splits her time between DC and Chicago, where she dolls up morning-news anchors for WGN TV.

"No other first ladies have consistently traveled with a makeup artist," said hairdresser Bernard Portelli, who styled Hillary Rodham Clinton’s blond mane in 1993 and tracks trends in first-lady style.

"It took Laura Bush four years to finally look good. It’s taken Michelle Obama two months. She wears fake eyelashes that are beautiful. She can’t do those herself."

Style watchers suspect that Grimes-Miles is behind Obama’s most prominent beauty reinvention: Her eyebrows. After the first lady drew criticism for looking angry, her high-arched eyebrows were reshaped with a softer arc that gave her a friendlier appearance.

Grimes-Miles has described Obama’s makeup as "not an avant-garde look . . . We want her to [look] very natural and polished."

Last week, Grimes-Miles joined "First Hairstylist" Johnny Wright, 31, aboard Air Force One as official guests of the president, during their six-day trip across Europe…

Wright, a former LA-based stylist for Frederic Fekkai, relocated to the capital for his position in January…

Mrs. Obama can’t put on her own false eyelashes?

And why is she wearing them in the first place? We suspect she is the first First lady to ever tart herself up so.

Meanwhile, we have had occasion before to note the etymology of the word ‘glamour.’

The word was introduced into the literary language by Sir Walter Scott.

Specifically, ‘the glamour’ is a spell horribly ugly witches would cast upon their beholders, who would then see them as beautiful.

From the Oxford English Dictionary:

glamour, n. [Originally Sc., introduced into the literary language by Scott. A corrupt form of grammar; for the sense cf. gramarye (and F. grimoire), and for the form glomery.]
1. Magic, enchantment, spell; esp. in the phrase to cast the glamour over one (see quot. 1721).
?17.. Johnny Faa in Ritson Sc. Songs (1794) II. 177 As soon as they saw her well far’d face, They coost the glamer o’er her.
1721 — Gloss. to Poems s.v., When devils, wizards or jugglers deceive the sight, they are said to cast glamour o’er the eyes of the spectator.
1789 Burns Capt. Grose’s Peregrin. iv, Ye gipsy-gang that deal in glamor, And you deep read in hell’s black grammar, Warlocks and witches.
1830 Scott Demonol. iii, This species of Witchcraft is well known in Scotland as the glamour, or deceptio visus, and was supposed to be a special attribute of the race of Gipsies.
1860 Reade Cloister & H. I. 98 He knows father and daughter both. They cast their glamour on him.
1894 D. C. Murray Making of Novelist 199 The man had a glamour for me and drew me with the attraction of a magnet.
2. a. A magical or fictitious beauty attaching to any person or object; a delusive or alluring charm.

Fitting, is it not – for the whole glamorous Obama administration?

This obsession with the First Lady’s looks is getting out of control. However, I refuse to stoop so low as to call her a cross between Wookie and a Klingon, even with the make up. Such petty comments are beneath us…

    • jrmcdonald says:

I couldn’t agree more Weasel. The other day some one said, ” Jackie Kennedy!, More like a Water Buffalo who walked through Jackie’s clothes line!” These types of remarks are the domain of the left.

  2. catie says:

I am also tired of this topic. That stupid comment that it took Laura Bush years to look good is typical of the democraps and their ilk. This woman is showing what money can do for your looks. Too bad that every other American woman doesn’t have her own makeup lady at her beck & call. I’m sorry, she’s not all that.

    • jobeth says:

Catie, with all these “tax cuts” and bail outs few of us can afford to even do ourselves up for our husbands or boyfriends any longer!

      Kidding, but just barely

    • electionhangovervictim says:

“This woman is showing what money can do for your looks.”

Actually, this woman is showing what TAXPAYERS’ money can do for HER looks. But, if anyone needs all that help, it’s her.

  3. gajfreeman says:

This is quite an ignorant and poorly researched topic. No proof of having an actual stylist or any other factual proof. Who cares? Seriously, if she wants someone to help, why not? Do you think taxes are paying for it? If you don’t know any better then it should not be promoted.

    • Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

“Do you think taxes are paying for it?

What the hell else would be paying for it when these grifters are involved? The only thing they’ve done their whole lives has been to gorge at the public trough.

    • jobeth says:

“This is quite an ignorant and poorly researched topic. No proof of having an actual stylist or any other factual proof.”

How do you know this IS an ignorant and poorly researched topic?
How do you know there IS NO proof of having an actual stylist or any other factual proof?

If you don’t know any better, then YOUR comments should not be promoted either. Or, if you do have “proof” of your statement…please, don’t be bashful, clue us in!

Don’t worry about my health…I won’t be holding my breath waiting for your “proofs”.

    • catie says:

gafreeman, gee a bit sensitive? A troll who has wondered over from du, kos, hp, media matters perhaps? This is the one thing and there really is no getting around it, Laura Bush had one thing Mrs. Obummer never will and that’s class. Money does not equate class and neither does status. She can’t pay a makeup girl to give her that.

    • electionhangovervictim says:

“A troll who has wondered over from du, kos, hp, media matters perhaps?”
      HAHAHAHA!! Good on ya’, catie!

gajfreeman: No, I think YOUR taxes are paying for it. so it’s a good thing you’re in favor of it.

  4. Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

What they fail to mention is that Ingrid Grimes-Miles is a pseudonym for Rick Baker.

  5. proreason says:

If ever there was a first lady who needed a full-time makeup artist, this is the one.

Now she needs a good magician for the derriere situation:

And of course, I’m usually the last person to criticize the Obama’s, but does anybody else find it curious that they would place such an emphasis on form? I thought they were all about substance, weren’t they? working hard, developing fiscally responsible budgets, redistributing wealth, saving the world, and all that stuff

    • caligirl9 says:

The comparisons to Jackie Kennedy are getting really old, too. Michelle Obama’s “style” is no different than thousands of women, she’s far from a trendsetter. Kennedy was truly a trendsetter; MO is a wannabe.

And as always with the dems, style is much more important than substance. What exactly is MO’s pet “First Lady” project? We knew what Laura Bush’s project was (literacy) and heck, we knew what Hilary’s project was (health care). Thus far MO’s project has been a puppy, which the media has reported on ad nauseum, and of course her “well-toned arms.”

Yawn. Another waste of taxpayer’s dollars. MO, buy a book like the rest of us, or stop at a cosmetics counter at Macy’s or Sephora and get some advice from a salesgirl.

    • jobeth says:

      Caligirl,

As usual you are right again.

JK was truly a trendsetter…because she was beautiful, graceful and classy Who wouldn’t have wanted carry themselves like her.

She didn’t try to be a trendsetter, it came natually and that is the sign of a true beauty.

This stuff about the “Trendy” Belle is part of the promotional junk coming from the Obalmys. It’s as fake as a $3 dollar bill.

Its like everything else from the left. They believe if the say it enough times and tell us that “everyone” is agreeing…sooner or later we will all believe it.

Funny, for such a trendsetter, I’ve not heard one person say they want to dress, walk, or wear their make up or hair like her…even from libs. But maybe I’m out of touch with today’s “trendsetter”.

I must not be listening close enough to the lib promos :-D

“Thus far MO’s project has been a puppy, which the media has reported on ad nauseum, and of course her “well-toned arms.”

Come on let’s be fair…you forgot something. She also has a “garden” where she makes her children watch from their swings as she makes the gardener do all the work. On our dime of course…The Obalmy way

    • caligirl9 says:

You know, the more I think about it, the more I think that MO’s “eyebrows” are chola eyebrows.

No disrespect to my many chola friends… they do it far far better than MO.

    • Gila Monster says:

Chola …, LOL, haven’t heard that one in a while. Good one Caligirl! ;o)

  6. StevefromMKE says:

I seem to recall the media and the left having a snit over Sarah Palin and her wardrobe budget from the RNC. Now…crickets. Go figure.

And not that I cared about Palin’s wardrobe budget, she looked fantastic.

    • jobeth says:

What I always found odd about that whole thing is that if she hadn’t come out looking like a class act in those clothes, (which BTW, she could have done in jeans and a flannel shirt with no difficulty) the lefties would have tried to make her out to be a ‘back country” hayseed. “See, she isn’t ready for prime time”

Either way she would have been wrong in their eyes. She should have taken the “rented” clothes and tossed them in the face of all those McCain “advisors”. But…she has more class than that.

    • electionhangovervictim says:

“I seem to recall the media and the left having a snit over Sarah Palin and her wardrobe budget from the RNC. Now…crickets. Go figure.”

Exactly…it’s always double standard with liberals: do as I say, not as I do.

  7. DANEgerus says:

Then again… clearly it’s a shovel ready project.

  8. Anonymoose says:

More and more the entire Obama administration is starting to remind me of the one of those grade D movies that someone is desperately trying to market as the next Blockbuster. You know the type, for two weeks straight it’s commercials every two minutes, then the big day arrives and you never hear about it again.

It’s well past opening day and the ads are still coming, and personally I hope they keep it up.

    WHY?

Well, in between flying a chef 850 miles to bake the Obamas pizza, the umpteen thousand dollar ring he bought her after the election, the dog that was “given” to them by Ted which is really a rare $2,000 breed, the 80 degree White House in winter, the DVD “gifts” he gives foreign heads of state, and Michelle’s 2 second embrace of the Queen that’s been turned into charming the entire palace, the general public who voted just because he was Not-Bush may finally wake up. The true liberals will keep hyping about Michelle’s toned arms and Barry’s excellent diction.

As for this stylist thing, Michelle should look in a mirror and realize it just don’t matter.

  9. canary says:

I do believe the false eyelashes are weaves. I noticed the overnite change prior to the election when she cut her hair. Looked like she had some botox too. She looks nothing like older pictures when he husband was appointed Illinoise Senator because no one really ran against him. Oh the corruption in Illinoise politics goes way back.

  10. VMAN says:

No fake eyelashes, eyebrow redo or full time makeup artist will make this beast look any less mean. She is just a bitter, hateful woman who hates the USA.

  11. mybrotherkeeper says:

“All women are created equal, but some are more equal than others.”

  12. JohnMG says:

What would the neighbors think if someone’s house required a full-time roofer on the payroll? Or a plumber? Or an electrician? How about if the car required a full-time mechanic? What if the dog needed a veterinarian on-call 24/7? “Why?” would be the first question arising in my mind.

    And since we’re probably footing the bill, I’d like to know if the make-up artist is salaried, or on a contract? Heaven forbid ‘Ingrid what’s-her-name’ has been hired on a “time-and-material” basis. I’d rather have the job go out for competitive bidding with the low bidder getting the job. ;-}

  13. Colonel1961 says:

Haven’t we been lectured about ‘cutting back’ in the ‘worst times since the great depression’?

Let’s see: plant Victory Garden. Check. Hire full-time make-up artist. Check. Juxtaposition, anyone? Checkmate.

  14. southern says:

She may have a full time makeup artist but what can she do with that $1200 plow mule rear?

  15. curvyred says:

“It took Laura Bush four years to finally look good.” Sorry I disagree with that statement – Laura is a very pretty woman, and in my honest opinion she always looked good – understated classic beauty.

MO needs someone to do her eyebrows – they are arched in a very unflattering way – maybe J-lo can give her the hook-up.

  16. JohnMG says:

    ……..”You can put lipstick on a pig……..”

Didn’t I hear BHO utter something like this only a few months ago? More wasted tax dollars, no?

  17. bobbys says:

I really hate to say this but i think its money well spent!!!!!!!.

If anybody is worried about the money perhaps she can do a wee bit of work on Hillary and sorta get a 2fer thing going on..

In fact i think Stacy and clinton should be called in!!!!

    • Liberals Demise says:

I think the illegal yardboys should be called to trim the chest hair on the BEAST once and for all!! This way…..the bridal and reins will fit properly while she plows that “Victory” garden!!
Hildabeast is waaaaaay beyond help. Polyester pant suits are her only way out!!

  18. fosterjarvis says:

Well-Well—looks like being president of the United States is no longer the toughest job in the world. Now that honor goes to the first lady’s “make-up artist”

  19. Liberals Demise says:

According to the picture above…..the “artiste” left a lot of ass hair on her forehead.

    Or……they could be…………eyelashes?

  20. MinnesotaRush says:

Amazing .. she actually gets better looking – the closer to bar closing.

    Not! (even then).

And Foster, .. you hit it on the head :

“Well-Well—looks like being president of the United States is no longer the toughest job in the world. Now that honor goes to the first lady’s “make-up artist”

    • caligirl9 says:

In my best “Valley Girl” voice: “MO is totally a Monet.”

(See the movie “Clueless” for definition! Actually on second thought she might not be even that good …)
