Michelle Obama unveils food marketing limits for schools

First lady Michelle Obama unveiled a proposal Tuesday that would ban marketing junk food and sodas in schools — an unusually aggressive position for the administration that could draw the ire of school districts, food companies and conservatives.

We realize realize it’s foolish to ask, but who elected Michelle Obama to anything? And when did the federal government take over our school system? And when did it give a First Lady the power to issue fatwas?

“We’ll be eliminating advertising for unhealthy foods and beverages in our schools because I think we can all agree that our classrooms should be healthy places where our kids aren’t bombarded with ads for junk food. And these guidelines are part of a broader effort to inspire food companies to rethink how they market food to kids in general,” said the first lady at a press event held in the East Room of the White House to further mark the fourth anniversary of the Let’s Move! initiative.

Er, doesn’t at least some of that food advertising revenue go to the schools? Which helps to pay for things like sports and other extra curricula activities, which are very important to keeping kids fit?

Schools would no longer be able to house vending machines that sport images of their flagship sodas, as part of the updated school wellness policy crafted by the Department of Agriculture. They would be prevented from having posters that promote unhealthy food and drinks or using cups in cafeterias that market high-calorie beverages, among other forms of promotion…

Obama also announced an expansion of a program through which school districts that have 40 percent or more children eligible for free or reduced lunch will now be able to serve free breakfast and lunch to all of their students. By July 1, the expansion of universal free lunch and breakfast is expected to include 22,000 schools and serve as many as 9 million children…

Yippee! After all, who says ‘there is no such thing as a free lunch’ — or breakfast or dinner?

“You can’t market what you can’t sell,” said Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The new rule “will make sure that schools can’t promote unhealthy meals in schools that undermine the new standards or nutrition education.” …

In 2009, the food industry spent approximately $149 million on marketing to schools, about 93 percent of which was spent on the marketing of beverages, Vilsack reported at the event…

How much of that money ends up going to the schools?

Some school districts have already expressed concerns about a potential loss in revenue due to limits on the types of food they could sell a la carte and in vending machines. Now the proposal on food marketing could refuel those concerns…

Finally. But The Politico waited until their 26th paragraph to mention this minor detail. And that is all they say about it.

    If you take the Queen’s schilling, you march to her drum. With
    all the funding of public education by Washington City, they pretty
    much can call the shots as they want, and they’ll sue you if you
    don’t follow their policies.

    I don’t remember Laura Bush setting policy during her 8 years spent as the First Lady. The Hildabeast yes, but not Mrs. Bush. She had some very good programs but they were all voluntary. No one voted for either the Hildabeast or Moochelle, they were just collateral damage for the public being stupid enough to elect their “men” into office.

    Moochelle is the typical liberal, do what I say, not what I do. I know what is best for you. And the title First Lady with her is a major misnomer, there is nothing lady like about that skank.
