Michelle Went To Spain To Comfort Friend

From the formerly respectable Lynn Sweet at the Chicago Sun-Times:

U.S. secret service agents guard the perimeter where U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha stay at the Beach Club of Villa Padierna Hotel in Marbella, southern Spain, on Friday, Aug. 6, 2010.

Inside story of Michelle’s trip

BY LYNN SWEET Sun-Times Columnist
August 9, 2010

WASHINGTON–Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha returned from Spain on Sunday, a vacation at a lavish hotel on the Mediterranean coast that triggered her first controversy since becoming first lady. I’m told she made the trip because she promised one of her closest friends, a longtime Chicago pal who just lost her father, she would spend time with her.

Mrs. Obama is the most popular figure in the Obama orbit — and turned around her image from the 2008 presidential campaign by adamantly staying away from any kind of controversy, focusing on safe issues: combatting [sic] childhood obesity and helping military families…

The scary thing is, it may be true that Mrs. Obama is the “most popular figure in the Obama orbit.”

A ritzy vacation in Spain while the U.S. faces tough economic times was off-message — as was highlighting the beaches in Spain after urging Americans to head to Florida’s Gulf Coast to help out the tourism industry impacted by the BP oil spill. (The first family flies to Florida this weekend.)

But the reason Mrs. Obama made the trip — and other facts, not rumors about the travel — are important in knowing the whole story and understanding why she made the call to go.

First, some numbers. Mrs. Obama did not travel with 40 friends, a number used by some news outlets.

And we have whose word for this? An anonymous source?

She vacationed with two women, one of them a longtime Chicago pal, Anita Blanchard, who is the obstetrician who delivered Sasha and Malia. Blanchard is married to Marty Nesbitt — President Obama’s buddy and the treasurer of Obama’s presidential campaign fund.

There was one other woman. Total: four daughters among the three women. They paid for their hotel rooms and other personal and travel expenses.

The trip involved six White House advance staffers and two East Wing staffers, deputy Chief of Staff Melissa Winter and Mrs. Obama’s personal assistant, Kristen Jarvis, according to Mrs. Obama’s spokeswoman Catherine McCormick Lelyveld.

So rest of the sixty hotel rooms were just for the Secret Service detail?

Mrs. Obama does travel with significant security — and in a trip like this, three shifts of uniformed and plain-clothes agents and military personnel flew with her on a big Air Force 757. No matter where she goes — domestic or international — any first lady gets protection and she does not decide how many agents are needed.

So why did Mrs. Obama go to Spain at this time? She’s not tone-deaf politically. What was behind the "mother-daughter" vacation?

A White House source told me that Blanchard’s father passed away and Mrs. Obama was not able to make the funeral at the beginning of July. Blanchard had promised her daughter she would take her to Spain for her birthday. She asked Mrs. Obama and Sasha to come with. (Malia is at overnight camp.)

"She felt it was important as a dear friend to do this," I was told

Well, if she had “made a promise” to the grieving wife of the guy in charge of Mr. Obama’s campaign fund that she would spend some time with her, then the hundreds of thousands of dollars (if not millions) of taxpayer money was not wasted.

We thought it had just been some extravagant whim.

God I live in a whole different world – my Mom passed in Jan and I am still dealing with going through a few generations of ‘stuff’ and the will and family at each other’s throats – and a trip to Spain, my a**. I can’t afford a frickin’ trip to my Mom’s old home (2 hours away) much less Spain.

What a bunch of leftist feel good touchy feelly emo crappola to justify The Won and the Klingon War Bride’s ‘gettin’ their own’ (on our tax dollars). No Class what-so-ever. Opps, my bad, eva.

    God Help America.

Gee, it’s getting to where they’re not even telling very good lies anymore. At least the old lies were funny, even if they were unbelievable.

And, “to do this as a dear friend”. My god, this writer’s inference that the people opposed to this boondoggle trip must be insensitive is insulting at the very least. Send a card, make a phone call. Or, spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer money to be able to “say it in person”.

Not politically tone-deaf? No. She’s blind, deaf AND dumb. To say nothing of her being a completely self-absorbed she-goat.

Right you are….it took this long to come up with a lame excuse like that?!
Another example of the Obamas’ overarching disdain for all of us.
They are superior to us and may do anything they please, much like the Federal Government currently.
Were Bubba in offce, he would have milked this recession like heck…..”I feel your pain.” He would have “appeared” to have made personal sacrifices, taken modest vacations and join the rest of the country on an austerity budget.

It’s not a Marie Antoinette cake-eating silk-pillow tour to rub America’s face is her ascent to the throne.

    It’s a sacrifice.

How could we be so wrong about such a proud American?

  4. conant says:

Couldn’t they have chilled at Camp David just as well?

    • heykev says:

Or possibly had her dear friend spend the night at the White House. For most American’s that would be a once in a lifetime experience.

But I guess it’s different if your husband was in charge of Mr. Obama’s campaign fund or your Union Head…then your have you’re own room there.

Even Mo Dowd seems confused and dismayed. Her schizophrenic column is an absolutely hilarious display of pointless mental gymnastics: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/08/opinion/08dowd.html?_r=1&ref=maureendowd

Certainly, as Obama adviser David Axelrod says, “not everything is political theater.” The Obamas shouldn’t have to poll, as the Clintons did, to figure out where to go on vacation.

“Folks in the public eye are also human beings,” Axelrod told me. “If you have the ability to show your kid a part of the world and you can do that together before they get to the age where they don’t want to do anything with you, I don’t think it’s right that you have to defer it because of the politics.”

Nothing there about comforting a friend.

These people aren’t even competent liars.

I’m starting to come to the assumption that their whole marriage and family was all manufactured for politics too, sadly. She clearly has no personal interest in him, she’s just out for her Upgrade. Now that there’s a good chance he won’t be the King of the new American-European royalty she sure as hell isn’t going to be Queen. But she’s damn sure gonna live like one while she can!

I think Pro’s right; she’s just doin’ it to demand the serf’s gaze on her. Whether the people believe that the only type of individuals who’re that needy for attention are 16 year old girls or not matters little to the Queen and her fat head.

    • proreason says:

“She clearly has no personal interest in him”

10,000 year old definitioin: marriage is between a man and a woman.

proreason’s corollary: marriage is between a heterosexual man and a woman

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

Shoot, barry has never paid attention to any contract in his life. Why should “marriage” be any different?

And, as far as Zira not having any interest in the boy, well, I guess she’s smarter than she looks.

If you’ll note, democrat presidents have had remarkable infidelity when it comes to marriage. Eleanor Roosevelt was seldom seen with Frankie. Frankie had a secretary who looked after his “needs”. Truman’s wife went to DC….once. Then decided to live in Missouri instead while her husband was president. JFK’s sexual field trips are now considered historical fact. Johnson was actually given permission by his wife to have sex with other women as long as it was out of her sight. She felt it was necessary for him to avoid frustration. (incredible) Jimmy Carter…well…what can you say? Cardigan sweaters and slippers pretty much says it all right there…so…he gets a pass. Besides, he and Rosalyn seemed to be devoted to one another. Clinton…pretty much academic there.

But this isn’t the first completely dysfunctional (perhaps bizarre) “marriage” the white house has ever seen. But it does seem to be a trend with the socialists.

    • proreason says:

Jimmy Carter…..formerly considered the worst President in history. Let’s compare:

Carter: Naval Officer graduate of Annapolis, nuclear scientist, successful farmer, governor of Georgia, highly intelligent. outwardly religious, moral to a fault, faithful husband, accumulated no wealth before during or after office, true to his word, lived the life he recommended to others, agonized over failures in office, confessed to lust in his heart for attractive women, misguided American patriot, liberal nut

      Obama: liberal nut

    • tranquil.night says:

Rusty you’re right. There’s your typical impulsive Liberal deviant then there’s your European high-society aristocrat that believes themselves entitled to a completely different set of rules. We’re seeing the latter, the Kennedy mentality. But it’s even more than that too. The Obama’s truly are the first ‘post-American’ First Family in both governing and personal style.

It’s interesting to note but serves little else to further speculate. I’m sure we’ll be reading books about it someday.

“proreason’s corollary: marraige is between a heterosexual man and a woman”

Winner.. and brilliant. Thanks for the good laugh. Brevity is the soul of wit.

    • jambon says:

Just about everything i’ve read on S&L has been worth taking to the bank – proreason’s response rings especially loud and clear.

I did a bit of reading-up and learned a few things I did not know about Jimmy Carter, inspired by proreason’s commentary. I was very surprised to read about Carter’s accomplishments and various successes throughout his life. It’s a little easier for me to understand his ascendancy to the Presidency.

And then there’s Barry, who attained the Presidency for the most orthogonal of reasons.

    • Petronius says:

      Hilarious, Pro.

Their extravagance, narcissism, and hubris are truly astonishing.

The Empress Armtonia keeps a personal staff of 24, including a makeup artist (talk about waste) and a hairstylist (ditto), at a total annual government salary of more than $1.6M, plus TDY expenses. Secret Service for security is extra. And — as with their personal staffs — the Obamas require far more security personnel than any of their predecessors.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, on the other hand :

      • sold the governor’s jet
      • cut the State’s Federal spending requests by 85%
      • dismissed the governor’s cook, and prepared her own meals
      • returned the governor’s auto, and drove her private vehicle
      • dismissed the governor’s security staff, and knows how to use her own gun

Yet the stenographers and coverup artists in the media gush all over the Empress Armtonia.

      All objectivity has fled.

We seem to live in two parallel universes — ours and the enemy’s — which are drifting further and further apart, becoming more and more polarized. Our enemies are bereft of ideas, and offer the proles nothing but goo to fill-up their empty minds, the triumph of hope over experience, bread and circuses, redistributions and wealth transfers, and a steep descent into tyranny and universal poverty.

Liberalism demands that democracy give way to . . . Liberalism.

I even believe that he was probably in the same city as Michelle when the blessed conception occured.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

      Empress Armtonia

      Oh that’s just perfect. :-)

    • Right of the People says:

Pro I’ll take it one step further. I wouldn’t be surprised if they even bother with his sperm. I’d like to see a DNA test to see if he is even the father. I believe she was “provided” to Barry because while the US may have been ready for a racial minority as president, I don’t think we’d be ready to swallow a gay man as president.

Just as I am now convinced that his biological mother was mated with his biological father and her only responsibility was to get him to the age where his training in an obscure corner of the Earth like Indonesia could begin. Once his indoctrination was begun and he had made satisfactory progress she could then return him to the states and hand him over for the next phase and was able to disappear from his life, her job completed.

    • jobeth says:

RB…Sounds about right to me. The Russians and Chinese are fond of such manipulation of their own so why not believe it could have happened with Barry boy.

    • proreason says:

I hear ya, rb and jobeth.

I think he was the sperm donor because the two mistakes bear a physical resemblance.

Interestingly, the moron is a dead ringer for his white grandpa in some pictures, and you can also see some resemblence in certain pictures of him with official mama. Obamy senior? Well, they might come from the same planet, but I’m not sure. One of the wilder theories out there is that grandpa impregnated a black girl and they persuaded his official mama to take him.

Mama is on records as being at Washington U (I could be wrong about the exact university) 15 days after his birth date. That is extremely strange too, isn’t it? It’s hard to believe that an 18 or 19 year old girl with a mixed race baby in 1961 would leave her mother and father and enroll in a school an ocean away in a place where she didn’t have a single relative to help with the baby’s care, and within 3 weeks of the birth of her first child.

Of course, Obamy Sr. didn’t bother to join them. And about a year later he turned down a scholarship to Columbia that would have paid for his “wife” and son, and instead accepted a scholarship to Harvard that payed for him only.

All in all, it has to be the stangest life story of notable person in US history.

But why should we care about all that. We have change to jam down people’s throats !! and hope !!!

    • jobeth says:

Pro…Don’t forget to add Malcolm X to this “Daddy

An argument could be made for the resemblance of our boy king and Malcolm X. Seems Mama had some dealings with him back then…or so I’m told. At least he looks more like Malcolm X than his daddy of record.

Malcolm X was as commie as it gets. And wasn’t there another guy during that time? That would fit nicely with ‘R of the P’s’ theory…:-D

Great fun, this speculation of who his father could be, because unless someone sits for DNA there will never be an answer to all the mysterious and dark possibilities.

This might be a great reality show…”Hey prez! …Who’s your Daddy?” There could be no winner but the stories would be wild.

Who would ever have ‘thunk’ the dignified presidency would ever have the drama of “Baby daddy” fit for the most serious Jerry Springer fans.

    • proreason says:

Yep, the Malcom X resemblence is interesting, but no one has been able to point to any contact between Malcolm and Mama. But I did read once where Malcolm made an appearance in Seattle in the right time frame.

There is more speculation about Frank Marshall Davis, who was the boy king’s contoller in Hawaii from the the time Obamy was 10 until he left for Occidental College. There is a slight physical resemblence, but Davis was supposedly in Hawaii during the conception timeframe, and nobody has demonstrated he had contact with the family until they went to Hawaii shortly before the Moron was born.

I lean towards his official mother (some resemblence) and an unidentified black man, neither Obamy Sr, Malcolm, nor Davis. But it’s really wide open. Other than Obamy Sr. allowing himself to be called the father, there isn’t a shred of evidence that he’s the guy. And if he was the guy, he was nothing more than a sperm donor because Obamy Jr and Sr didn’t have more than a couple of hours of contact during their entire lives.

Chalk that up as another strange piece of the wierdest biography of any notable figure in US history.

Why not a private plane on her private business. AF2 is needed to accompany AF1 as decoy, so good thing Mr. president had the helicopter. The more he’s at home the better for America.

Why not some place in America or Hawaii in their multimillion dollar rental..

Michelle just ordered a coat from London from Spice Girls fashion designer.

She could have at least bought a foreign coat at a U.S. store to help pay for it’s clerks’ paychecks.

Michelle’s mother finally got a break from babysitting since the girls were little, after the Obamas quit the luxury cost of a nanny who came to their home.

So who am I to believe my lying optics or the Journolists?

    • AcornsRNutz says:

Rush made excellent mention of this article, and even paraphrased Petronius’ comment. I especially liked his thing on this optics bit. Where the hell did this ludicrous misuse of the term come from anyway? I swear I have heard all the journo-political jargon, but this optics thing strikes me as really bizarre. In any case, your optics are clearly in the wrong here, and the lovely Mooch-elle would never stoop to rubbing our noses in her resplendence.

    • tranquil.night says:

I’m fairly certain the Left’s new favorite touch-word: optics came from the same Mo Dowd editorial I posted earlier in the thread.

“In politics and pop culture, optics are all. And Michelle’s optics sent a message that likely made some in the White House and the Democratic Party wince.”

That’s the absurd quote that actually had me laughing so hard to begin. It’s funny because it’s true.. of the left. Then after hearing that montage of apparatchiks repeating it on Rush this morning – oh man I had to pull over.

Yes and indeed kudos to the ever-patriotic Petronius on the Mooch-elle / Palin analogy. If that’s not the most outstanding example of Modern Feminism having been turned on its head, then there’s no such thing. I’m sure Sarah appreciates it being said in public as much as we all do.

The thing to understand about the Partisan Political Operatives is that most of them don’t need a JournoList to stay on the talking points. That’s actually all that modern journalism is today anyway. Rush typically has a daily media montage proving it.

I mean come on – these are all faithful collectivists we’re talking about. When someone comes up with a sleek new political term to spin bad optics and bad substance into irrelevant political discussion, the apparatchiks instinctively know when and how to peel public discourse towards that narrative. What they did with the debate over ObamaCare and “Death Panels” is the clearest example that comes to mind just off the top, although I’m so numbed to this obvious one I nearly forgot it too: “racists!”

It really is the standard MO for any divisive issue though.. control the language, content meaningless except for its political value. Straight up Alinsky/Marx: pick a target, polarize it, isolate it.

    • proreason says:

Optics has been floating around the business world for at least 5 years.

It’s a marketing word meaning the presentation of the product. The product can be great but if it doesn’t look good, the customer won’t buy. Usually when you hear it, it’s assumed that the product or service is right but we need to show it in a better light. It’s the area where sales and marketing come to the forefront.

Example: Before – “$999.99 before tax”. Ouch !!! After – “Less than a dollar a day”. What a bargain !!! (same product)

“A simple, inescapable logic guides the socialist ruling class: Justice requires power. In a democratic republic, knowledge is power. Therefore, knowledge must be controlled. The size of a government will always be directly related to how often it lies to you.” – DoctorZero.

Therein underlies the insanity behind the argument that disgust and dismay over this vacation was the result of bad political optics.

This nation is more catatonic by the day because they’re realizing they’re being herded by a ‘Dominion of Liars’ into an abyss of societal catastrophe. There is absolutely no trust and barely any hope left for the Federal Government. They’re even being called the enemy.

And these mush-heads are now worried about how a lavish foreign vacation during campaign season looks to the public (i.e. working families)?

It just begs soo many questions, which besides “Where was this concern for optics as Congress rammed ObamaCare down our throat?” is “Are you that stupid? Or do you think we are?”

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

Aside from obvious “buzzword o’day” It’s pretty obvious that although the socialists in power KNOW that socialism is doomed to failure, Pro hit on a point that makes it that much more scary. It was in another thread and he mentioned that they seem to keep finding rubes to buy into the empty vessel that is this theory of utopia and equality. Perhaps the eggheads in ivy-league schools think they will somehow transcend the space/time continuum by holding dear that “all must be equal”. After all, they are in the best schools in the nation and must therefore do their “civic duty” to help the unwashed.

Yet, it was predominantly unwashed who built, organized and made this nation a success.

However, the socialists in charge know that socialism is a fool’s errand and like all socialists who are at the top, they are actually capitalists in that they accumulate great wealth by stealing it from the masses. Again, it’s nothing new.

And again, I am reminded that they are just trying to “get while the gettin’s good” and somewhere down the road when it all falls apart, they will be set and their heirs will be set and who the hell cares about the people they were elected to serve?

As a side note, I want to know how they acted and what they were doing in the 80’s, you know, that oh-so-nasty period of “me-ism” that they claim to despise so much. Yet, most of the democrats in office are multimillionaires. How did that happen if not by inheriting wealth?

Bet there was some pretty shrewd capitalist activity going on. So, anyone? Bueller? How did our elected democrats become rich? I’d love to know and see it in print. THAT, would be something to elicit “class envy” for sure.

    • AcornsRNutz says:

Thanks for the clarification on the optics thing, but even if I respect the dread private sector’s use of the term initially, I still think it is akin to athleticism and proactive.

  11. proreason says:

Uncommon wisdom via WSJ this morning:

“….the American people are in open rebellion against an economic strategy of public debt, higher taxes and unending deficits. We’re not all Keynesians, it turns out. The panic that propelled Mr. Obama to the presidency has waned. There is deep concern, to be sure. But the Obama strategy has lost the consent of the governed.

…Big as Reagan’s mandate was, in two elections, the man was never bigger than his county. … No political class rode with him to power anxious to lay its hands on the nation’s treasure, eager to supplant the forces of the market with its own economic preferences.

…There is little evidence that the Obama presidency could yet find new vindication, another lease on life. Mr. Obama will mark time, but henceforth he will not define the national agenda. He will not be the repository of its hopes and sentiments. The ambition that his would be a “transformational” presidency—he rightly described Reagan’s stewardship in these terms—is for naught.

… The country has had its fill with a scapegoating that knows no end from a president who had vowed to break with recriminations and partisanship. The magic of 2008 can’t be recreated, and good riddance to it. Slowly, the nation has recovered its poise. There is a widespread sense of unstated embarrassment that a political majority, if only for a moment, fell for the promise of an untested redeemer—a belief alien to the temperament of this so practical and sober a nation.”

    the bolds are mine.

This is the first time I’ve heard the word “embarassment” used in reference to the Moron.

He did the okey-doke on the country. We were bamboozled.
