Democrat Monica Conyers Gets 37 Months

From the Detroit Free Press:

A fuming Conyers seeks appeal

BY BEN SCHMITT and JOE SWICKARD

March 11, 2010

After months of silence, the combative and unpredictable Monica Conyers erupted during her sentencing in federal court Wednesday: first, repeatedly asking to withdraw her guilty plea, then exclaiming she wasn’t going to jail for something she didn’t do.

"I’m not going to be made a scapegoat for other people," the ex-Detroit councilwoman said in a raised voice. But U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn was unmoved. He sentenced her to 37 months in prison and two years of probation.

Her attorney, Steven Fishman, told Cohn the news media has pounded Conyers "like a piñata." Acknowledging ongoing corruption investigations, Fishman said his client "should not be a poster child for all that."

Conyers, who is married to U.S. Rep. John Conyers — who was not in court and did not comment — pleaded guilty last summer for her role in a bribery scheme involving a $1.2-billion sludge hauling contract between the city and Texas-based Synagro Technologies.

Conyers is to report to prison July 1.

But, later Wednesday, Conyers filed a notice to appeal and was appointed representation by the Federal Defender’s Office.

You see, Mrs. Conyers cannot afford to pay for her legal representation. The taxpayers have to.

Although defendants often are allowed to appeal rulings, there is a question if that applies to Conyers in this case because she signed a plea agreement as part of her admission of guilt on June 22 that indicates if the sentence imposed falls at 60 months or less, "defendant waives any right to appeal her conviction or sentence."

In other words, Mrs. Conyers tried to revoke her guilty plea after having done a plea bargain for a lighter sentence. And that is not allowed.

But when have rules ever applied to Democrats?

But none of that stopped Conyers on Wednesday, because she repeatedly told Cohn during sentencing that she also wanted to withdraw her guilty plea.

"I just don’t feel that I should go to jail for something that I didn’t do," she said. "And it’s been said that you are going to make an example out of me, and the news media has been putting pressure on you to send me to jail, and I just don’t feel that’s appropriate."

She then invoked her husband and her two sons.

"My husband is an older man, and my son is 14, and I have done everything this court asked me to do," she said. "You asked me to quit my job. I did. You asked me to stay off television. I did. … You asked me to see a psychologist. I did."

Officials at the congressman’s office said they had no comment Wednesday evening…

By the way, the word ‘Democrat’ does not appear once in this three page article, even though Mrs. Conyers has been an elected Democrat official and she is married to one of the longest serving, most powerful Democrats in the country.

Perhaps the Detroit Free Press just assumed everyone would realize she is a Democrat since it’s an article about corruption and bribery and kickbacks.

Or maybe they were just following the media’s standard rulebook.

If she was the wife of a Republican, he would be hounded by the press with accusatory questions like: “Why won’t you pay for a decent lawyer for YOUR OWN WIFE?!?”

Mrs. Conyers is quite audacious, isn’t she?

  3. Right of the People

“But dey said if I pleaded guilty, I’s only be getting probation! Muthaf**king liars!”

    Hilarious!!!

Could you imagine the conversation you or I would have with the Police, IRS, FBI, etc. if it was our wife who was caught taking bribes, I do not think we could get away with, I did not know. The obvious question of where did you think the extra money in your bank account came from or how come you had all that cash in the freezer? – Sorry, wrong congressman.

I guess I must be completely cynical by now … I fully expected her to be rewarded rather than sentenced.

Since I am a Lions fan, I check the Detroit papers every day. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Mrs. Conyers also had her brother, Reggie Esters, a convicted felon, hired for a city job for which he was not qualified and for which he did not show up for work. I hope some wise-ass liberal out there posts another crappy link to a site about Republican corruption where they list an aid to a state representative and then try to equate it to the wife of a U. S. Congressmen. Or how about the son of a U. S. Congresswoman?

    U. S. Representative Carolyn Cheeks Kirkpatrick was just summoned before a grand jury last week along with a worker from her district office. No word on whether that relates to the Synago sludge scandal, for which Mrs. Conyers is going to prison, or if it has to do with her son’s (the former mayor) reluctance to repay his $1,000,000 restitution bill for having and affair with his chief of staff, then firing cops on his police protection unit who found out about the affair, and then lying about it in court before reaching a $9,000,000 settlement with the whistleblowers.

Carolyn Cheeks Kirkpatrick’s son, Kwame, is now in trouble because his wife is having plastic surgery and he’s living the high life but he claims he doesn’t have any money to repay his restitution. He had no idea who paid for his home or his Cadillac Escalade. He says he has to maintain a certain high profile image in order to earn the money to repay the city. He should work it off making 50 cents a day making license plates. Maybe he could get a loan from the hundreds of relatives he hired when he was mayor or from some of the construction projects he awarded to friends and family.

Detroit is one sick city, completely controlled by Democrats and they just keep electing characters like Sander Levin, John Conyers, and Carolyn Cheeks Kirkpatrick again and again and again while their city burns. But as long as the auto unions get paid off, they cycle repeats itself.

The beauty of this whole Monica Conyers episode is that now she is saying she didn’t do it. Please. Ethically, Mrs. Conyers is just below Bernie Madoff (88% political contributions to Democrats). Why would anyone believe anything out of her mouth? Why would anyone believe anything out or Mr. Conyers mouth? Oh, because he’s a shill for the auto unions and he is backed by their money.

I can’t think of a better example of corruption, mismanagement, and ineptitude, kind of like the Lions.

It’s hard to determine which is the worst thing about Detroit. It seems that everyone and everything is competing to be the worst possible thing ever created in America.

Poor Barry Sanders. There were only 3 plays on the quarterback’s wristband: Barry left, Barry right, Barry up the middle…

At what point did Mr Conyers think marrying this battleaxe was a good idea?

  8. video of Monica ally Kwame Kilpatrick‘s Mommy… ya gotta see it to believe it…

Yep, government is the ring of Sauron, and you think you have the strength to resist its power over you, but you can’t. The blame is 50% of having a government with too much opportunity to wield power, and 50% that we have a mostly wicked population that cannot restrain themselves from abusing that power.

We also need court reform. It’s too expensive, and the gov’t can charge you with anything, and yet YOU have to sell your car and home to pay for a private attorney, what a racket that is.!
