More Fed Workers Now Make Over $150K

From the outside the beltway hicks at USA Today:

More federal workers’ pay tops $150,000

The number of federal workers earning $150,000 or more a year has soared tenfold in the past five years and doubled since President Obama took office, a USA TODAY analysis finds.

You have to hand it to Mr. Obama. He takes care of his own.

The fast-growing pay of federal employees has captured the attention of fiscally conservative Republicans who won control of the U.S. House of Representatives in last week’s elections. Already, some lawmakers are planning to use the lame-duck session that starts Monday to challenge the president’s plan to give a 1.4% across-the-board pay raise to 2.1 million federal workers.

Why should this even be under discussion? We’re told that there has been no inflation. And we are told that we all need to sacrifice to cut the deficit – to have ‘skin in the game.’

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who will head the panel overseeing federal pay, says he wants a pay freeze and prefers a 10% pay cut

Why start there? Why not demand a 25% cut? We could probably balance the budget right there.

Federal salaries have grown robustly in recent years, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Office of Personnel Management data. Key findings:

• Government-wide raises. Top-paid staff have increased in every department and agency. The Defense Department had nine civilians earning $170,000 or more in 2005, 214 when Obama took office and 994 in June.

• Long-time workers thrive. The biggest pay hikes have gone to employees who have been with the government for 15 to 24 years. Since 2005, average salaries for this group climbed 25% compared with a 9% inflation rate

And we’re not sure that the federal government admits that there has even been 9% inflation.

Federal workers earning $150,000 or more make up 3.9% of the workforce, up from 0.4% in 2005

Which, as they said earlier, means their numbers have increased tenfold. That is simply grotesque.

Once again, lest we forget, the Democrats have controlled the federal government’s purse strings since January 2007.

And in reality, through their control of the permanent bureaucracy, they control it all the time — no matter who is supposedly in charge.

Does this mean there ARE no ‘Shovel Ready Jobs’ to speak of?

The cry that is typically heard is that such pay rates are required to avoid “losing” talent to the private sector.

Hey, if those employees can find a private sector job in this economy, more power to them, let them go.

What a sinister looking building that is. It looks like it must go on for miles. But as bad as it is, I’m sure most people would much prefer looking at the outside of the building to what must go on inside.

As for the cuts, I agree that the GOP is aiming far too low. Why not start by going after the public sector unions themselves? These unions decided to go “all in” with the Democrats, and they lost. There must be consequences for that. This also happens to be the best chance the GOP will ever have to point out to the American people what a disaster public sector unions have turned out to be. From coast to coast there are cities, counties, states, school districts, etc. that are collapsing under their own weight, and it is axiomatic that wherever you find this situation you will find public sector union(s) at the root of the problem.

170,000 a year for Obama’s spiritual guru Joshua to send (via blackberry) a daily proverb or verse from world religions to inspire Obama. He’s probably keeping a journal of the texts to publish someday.
