Israelis Hits Hamas ‘Security Compounds’

From the Agence France-Pressee:

More than 200 dead as Israel hammers Hamas-run Gaza

by Sakher Abu El Oun

GAZA CITY (AFP) – Israel hammered Hamas targets in Gaza on Saturday, killing at least 205 people in retaliation for ongoing rocket fire in one of the bloodiest days of the decades-long Middle East conflict.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said "Operation Cast Lead," which has also left some 300 wounded, would continue "as long as necessary." …

Following the mid-morning wave of attacks, which saw some 60 aircraft bomb the impoverished, overcrowded territory, Hamas swiftly responded by firing several dozen rockets into the Jewish state, killing one Israeli…

Air strikes continued sporadically throughout the day and into the evening, with no immediate reports of casualties…

Medics said civilians had been hit, but the majority of the victims appeared to be members of Hamas, branded a terror group by Israel and the West.

At least 205 Palestinians were killed and some 300 others wounded, said Dr Moawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza emergency services…

Hamas militants warned Israelis living near the border to "prepare the funeral shrouds," vowing that the Islamists’ response "was on its way." …

The bombardment set off angry demonstrations in Israel’s Arab towns and in the Israeli-occupied West Bank…

Hamas is sworn to destruction of the Jewish state and has warned that it would retaliate to a major Gaza operation by resuming suicide bombings inside Israel. The last such attack claimed by Hamas was in January 2005.

Of course Israel probably felt like they had better do this while they still had an ally in the White House.

    From a horrified AP:

Israel launches air strikes on Gaza, 155 dead

    By Ibrahim Barzak

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli warplanes retaliating for rocket fire from the Gaza Strip pounded dozens of security compounds across the Hamas-ruled territory in unprecedented waves of airstrikes Saturday, killing at least 155 and wounding more than 310 in the single bloodiest day of fighting in recent memory.

Hamas said all of its security installations were hit and responded with several medium-range Grad rockets at Israel, reaching deeper than in the past. One Israeli was killed and at least four people were wounded.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said “the operation will last as long as necessary,” but it was not clear if it would be coupled with a ground offensive. Asked if Hamas political leaders might be targeted next, military spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibovich said, “Any Hamas target is a target.”

The strikes caused widespread panic and confusion in Gaza, as black clouds of smoke rose above the territory, ruled by Hamas for the past 18 months. Some of the Israeli missiles struck in densely populated areas as children were leaving school, and women rushed into the streets frantically looking for their children. Most of those killed were security men, but civilians were among the dead.

Said Masri sat in the middle of a Gaza City street, close to a security compound, alternately slapping his face and covering his head with dust from the bombed-out building.

“My son is gone, my son is gone,” wailed Masri, 57. The shopkeeper said he sent his 9-year-old son out to purchase cigarettes minutes before the airstrikes began and now could not find him. “May I burn like the cigarettes, may Israel burn,” Masri moaned.

In Gaza City’s main security compound, bodies of more than a dozen uniformed security officers lay on the ground. One survivor raised his index finger in a show of Muslim faith, uttering a prayer. The Gaza police chief was among those killed. One man, his face bloodied, sat dazed on the ground as a fire raged nearby.

Later, some of the dead, rolled in blankets, were laid out on the floor of Gaza’s main hospital for identification. Hamas police spokesman Ehad Ghussein said about 140 Hamas security forces were killed.

Defiant Hamas leaders threatened revenge, including suicide attacks. Hamas “will continue the resistance until the last drop of blood,” vowed spokesman Fawzi Barhoum.

Israel told its civilians near Gaza to take cover as militants began retaliating with rockets, and in the West Bank, moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for restraint. Egypt summoned the Israeli ambassador to express condemnation and opened its border with Gaza to allow ambulances to drive out some of the wounded.
Protests erupted in the Abbas-ruled West Bank and across the Arab world.

Several hundred angry Jordanians poured protested outside a U.N. complex in the capital Amman. “Hamas, go ahead. You are the cannon, we are the bullets,” they cried, some waving the signature green Hamas banners.

In Beirut, dozens of youths hit the streets and set fire to tires. In Syria’s al-Yarmouk camp, outside Damascus, dozens of Palestinians protested the attack as well, vowing to continue fighting Israel.

Israeli leaders approved military action against Gaza earlier in the week. …

For me the two most important lines here are:

Hamas said all of its security installations were hit

Congratulations to the IDF. Great job!

The shopkeeper said he sent his 9-year-old son out to purchase cigarettes minutes before the airstrikes began

Shouldn’t the tobacco companies rather than Israel be to blame here? I mean come on, if the city had had laws in place requiring you to be 18 to buy cigarettes, this man’s son would be alive today…

Well, we knew this was coming. I believe there were several comments here about the probability of Israel taking action before Mr. Obama takes office.

Still, I found this line interesting:

Israeli warplanes retaliating for rocket fire from the Gaza Strip

Surely this must be an error. Hamas attacking Israel with rockets? That can’t possibly be. Not only are we assured that Israel is the aggressor, surely Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats, not to mention the MSM, would never allow something like this to continue without even a word of protest!

  3. VMAN says:

Welcome to the brave new world. The Jews are are the reason for all the trouble in the world. Oh wait that sound like the familiar. Where have I heard that before? Never mind! The socialists, I mean the liberals, I mean the Nazis… Well never mind they’ll take care of ALL our problems. Because THE ONE said so!!!

    • cjokry says:

I have wondered now for a long time why the media always tries to paint Israel as the aggressor in this conflict, or, at best to paint the whole thing as a sad, human tragedy with no right or wrong side. A cursory examination of the facts, (of a given episode or of the larger conflict) usually shows the Palestinians to be in the wrong from top to bottom. What’s their stupid problem anyways?

  4. take_no_prisoners says:

The misguided fools of hamas simply gave the Israelis the perfect excuse to take out a large number of missles and enemy soldiers prior to the real action. I bet the Gaza action was merely preparation for taking out the Iranian nuclear installations before it becomes more difficult after 1/20/2009.

  5. retire05 says:

Did you ever look at a map and realize the size of Israel compared to all the surrounding nations that want to destroy them? Pretty mind boggling.

Israel should adopt the 1/100 policy. For every one of them that is killed by a Hamas rocket, they will return the favor 100 fold. And where is the UN? You know, the organization that promotes peace and even has it’s own peace keeping force? Or are those forces all too busy raping children in third world nations?

Here’s hoping they flatten that strip of filth. Call it “urban revitalization”

  7. Liberals Demise says:

Urban Renewal at its’ best!! I smell a fusion reactor on the hit list……soon!!
Happy New Year Hamas and remember, “Love Thy Neighbor!!”

    • take_no_prisoners says:

Well, a fission reactor anyway. If they’ve got a controlled fusion reactor we’re in more trouble than anyone thought!!!

    • sheehanjihad says:

I would prefer a fission fusion device of about thirty megatons going off over the middle of the country. Six hundred square miles of breathable oxygen would be used up for about ten minutes…..works for me!

    • Liberals Demise says:

I wonder if the ONE, hafbro-American bothered to look up from his putter and acknowledge that the earth is still spinning and it’s not spinning around him!!

  8. 1sttofight says:

Amiidiot combines his DNA with a goat every couple of days and calls it a fusion reaction.

  9. cjokry says:

You always see that footage of these guys throwing rocks at armed Israeli soldiers. That’s worse than bringing a knife. I feel bad for that man and his kid; it’s too bad they don’t have better leadership to show them the way to peace is to stop fighting, not wait for your bigger, stronger enemy to stop.

  10. pinandpuller says:

Its too bad that kid couldn’t make it to 15 and strap a bomb on-what a waste. He could have at least run numbers for another 6 years.

  11. Zeusshiloh says:

It is about time Israel did something. They have been on the receiving end for many years, and finally have taken some steps to defend themselves.

Of course, most of the world will condemn them, but for me, they have been patient long enough.

    • Diane says:

The trouble is that every time Israel does something, they’re roundly condemned by every right-thinking moron on the planet. That doesn’t stop them when they see a clear and present danger to their people or their nation, but it does mean that they measure every response. This is, perhaps, a good thing. They’re an all-together admirable people.

  12. VMAN says:

What ever happened to having a war where you killed every man woman and child until the enemy capitulates. Rules of engagement and civilized warfare are just stupid oxymorons.

    • Liberals Demise says:

Can you imagine fighting Hitler and Tojo today? This huggy, touchy, feely shit would tear us a new A-hole. Liberals will hand us to our emenies…….wait and see!!

  13. 12 Gauge Rage says:

I used to think that the whole conflict was in favor of the Israelis with their superior firepower etc. Then I saw the reaction of the Arab street, after 9-11, with the people cheering the collapse of the twin towers and firing rifles in the air, handing out candy to their kids (whom they’ll later poison with their hatred to keep the cycle going) and I immediately decided that these people get what they deserve. The sword will continue to devour their house until the end of time. Hypothetically, I’m firmly convinced that if all the Jewish people were to suddenly leave this world and travel millions of light years away to another planet, these Arab monsters would find a way to travel over to that planet and cause problems there too because they couldn’t bear the thought that somewhere in the universe the Jewish people were alive and well and prospering.

    • Liberals Demise says:

      Hear, Hear……Well said!!
If this country ever turns its’ back on Israel….I too shall leave and take up arms with them. I’m not even a Jew!! I do believe though!! ( I was one of a few Marines in 1974 to jump with the IDF, to earn the right to wear their “WINGS”)

  14. 12 Gauge Rage says:

LD, Many thanks for your service to country. Back in the seventies was when the IDF was on top of their game kicking ass and taking names. It’s a shame to see the touchy feely, P.C. politicians of their government threatening the livelihood of the nation by offering concessions for peace which the terrorists will never accept. Neville Chamberlain tried that with Hitler and look what it brought him and Europe. The bohemian corporal, now chancellor of Germany trampled everyone and did whatever the hell he pleased until a stronger force of arms stopped him.

    • Liberals Demise says:

Thank you for the accolades Rage and you are welcome!! It was my honor to serve this GREAT NATION!! I wish there wasn’t a age restriction as for I am just as fit or better as I was back then. As I read your web of words, I see that you are well on top of what is what and alot better at versing your thoughts than I am. I do agree with you that the PC mechanics have done their worst in meddling in Mid East affairs. I have a feeling that for all their (Israel) trying to be the better nation and ceding land for peace, their enemies are in it for a different ending. Israel ain’t no dummy and the world will once again watch as they secure their State and Right to life there. God be with them!!

  15. 12 Gauge Rage says:

LD, The worst mistake the Israelis made was to give up valuable land that served as a buffer zone. Now the enemy is right at their doorstep but the idiots in the Knesset still wring their hands in despair and wonder just how much more will it take for these animals to leave them alone. Newsflash to all these liberal Israeli appeasement idiots: They won’t leave you alone until everyone of you and your culture is wiped off the face of the earth.

  16. VMAN says:

Sung to the tune of of Lennon and McCartney’s Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. Bang Bang Israel’s silver hammer came down upon their head. Bang Bang Israels silver hammer made sure that they were dead.
