More ‘Tolerance’ From Liberals – Oak Park

From the Chicago Tribune:

Catherine Vogt, 14, conducted an experiment in political tolerance at her Oak Park middle school and learned some valuable lessons.

Tolerance fails T-shirt test

As the media keeps gushing on about how America has finally adopted tolerance as the great virtue, and that we’re all united now, let’s consider the Brave Catherine Vogt Experiment.

Catherine Vogt, 14, is an Illinois 8th grader, the daughter of a liberal mom and a conservative dad. She wanted to conduct an experiment in political tolerance and diversity of opinion at her school in the liberal suburb of Oak Park.

She noticed that fellow students at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama for president. His campaign kept preaching “inclusion,” and she decided to see how included she could be.

So just before the election, Catherine consulted with her history teacher, then bravely wore a unique T-shirt to school and recorded the comments of teachers and students in her journal. The T-shirt bore the simple yet quite subversive words drawn with a red marker:

“McCain Girl.”

“I was just really curious how they’d react to something that different, because a lot of people at my school wore Obama shirts and they are big Obama supporters,” Catherine told us. “I just really wanted to see what their reaction would be.”

Immediately, Catherine learned she was stupid for wearing a shirt with Republican John McCain’s name. Not merely stupid. Very stupid.

“People were upset. But they started saying things, calling me very stupid, telling me my shirt was stupid and I shouldn’t be wearing it,” Catherine said.

Then it got worse.

“One person told me to go die. It was a lot of dying. A lot of comments about how I should be killed,” Catherine said, of the tolerance in Oak Park.

But students weren’t the only ones surprised that she wore a shirt supporting McCain.

“In one class, I had one teacher say she will not judge me for my choice, but that she was surprised that I supported McCain,” Catherine said.

If Catherine was shocked by such passive-aggressive threats from instructors, just wait until she goes to college.

“Later, that teacher found out about the experiment and said she was embarrassed because she knew I was writing down what she said,” Catherine said.

One student suggested that she be put up on a cross for her political beliefs.

“He said, ‘You should be crucifixed.’ It was kind of funny because, I was like, don’t you mean ‘crucified?’ ” Catherine said.

Other entries in her notebook involved suggestions by classmates that she be “burned with her shirt on” for “being a filthy-rich Republican.”

Some said that because she supported McCain, by extension she supported a plan by deranged skinheads to kill Obama before the election. And I thought such politicized logic was confined to American newsrooms. Yet Catherine refused to argue with her peers. She didn’t want to jeopardize her experiment.

“I couldn’t show people really what it was for. I really kind of wanted to laugh because they had no idea what I was doing,” she said.

Only a few times did anyone say anything remotely positive about her McCain shirt. One girl pulled her aside in a corner, out of earshot of other students, and whispered, “I really like your shirt.”

That’s when you know America is truly supportive of diversity of opinion, when children must whisper for fear of being ostracized, heckled and crucifixed.

The next day, in part 2 of The Brave Catherine Vogt Experiment, she wore another T-shirt, this one with “Obama Girl” written in blue. And an amazing thing happened.

Catherine wasn’t very stupid anymore. She grew brains.

“People liked my shirt. They said things like my brain had come back, and I had put the right shirt on today,” Catherine said…

Catherine never told us which candidate she would have voted for if she weren’t an 8th grader. But she said she learned what it was like to be in the minority.

“Just being on the outside, how it felt, it was not fun at all,” she said.

Don’t ever feel as if you must conform, Catherine. Being on the outside isn’t so bad. Trust me.

We were just talking about how Oak Park was called the land of “wide lawns and narrow minds” by Hemingway.

And there they go again.

    What goes around comes around.

Children are mirrors of their parents.

Hate-mongers will in time get their just desserts…..if they haven’t managed to get us all killed by then.

  2. JannyMae says:

But….but…I thought the hatemongers were on McCain’s side of the aisle? That’s what we hear all the time from these people, right? We hate the poor, we hate gays, we hate women, etc.,,,,

This is actually not at all surprising to me, as my home town is right next to Oak Park, Illnois. They are among the most liberal villages in the Chicago suburbs.

  3. 1sttofight says:

Liberals can not think outside the tiny box their minds are trapped in.
    That would require work.

My 12th grade daughter was a avid McCain supporter and displayed such at school. Had she not been a Black Belt in TaeKwondo, I’m quite sure that the Obama Peaceniks would have promptly put her in the hospital! She only had to display her ability to stand up for her belief once in front of all the Obambas. I’ve taught my kids to never start fights but if a fight is started…..FINISH the fight!! I was taught this as a young Marine many moons ago. It is a crying shame it has come to this. Best investment I ever made was on Person to Person combat for my kids!! LOOK OUT!! You never know who you threaten!!

It’s just my opinion but I believe today we have one bad generation of parents. They’re doped up, self-absorbed, lazy (body and mind), and too mentally immature to be raising or teaching children. Like everything else good, the more responsible and civil parents are losing their voices in this nation. We can’t survive that loss.

Catherine Vogt – you are one awesome young lady. If they can’t win with fear then they are powerless.

  6. JannyMae says:

A little bit more on Oak Park, Illinois. It is a Chicago suburb noted for its outrageously high property taxes that help support, “diversity,” by providing section 8 housing. Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School used to be Ralph Waldo Emerson Junior High…but he was a white guy, so…

Along with the “diversity” came gangs and crime and drugs and….well, I don’t think I need to go on.

Yes, they are noted for “taking pride” in their liberal thinking. Over a period of five years, the “Christian” church we attended in Oak Park morphed into a, “social justice,” advocate instead of an advocate for Christ. When they made an openly homosexual member of the congregation an elder, we hit the road, as did a number of other bible-believing Christians. Nuff said….

My brother-in-law was incensed about a parent-teachers meeting for his 9 year-old yesterday (who has already been held back one grade).

The reason: the teacher pointed out that the chinese and indian kids already know multiplication tables at that age.

What genererated the BIL’s fury: it’s so unfair for kids to have to learn at such a young age.

    We live in Obamynation now.

  8. GuppyNblue says:

That is a shame. Those are literally the brains growing years and the best time to learn things like math. Liberal teaching methods don’t have a record to stand on. We make less and less demands on our children and get helpless adults to show for it. In fact, I believe the reason we have so many liberals today is a direct result of spoiling our children.

  9. Liberals Demise says:

This here is an OBAMANATION if ever I heard of one!!

  10. Liberals Demise says:

Everything vile and ugly henceforth shall be known as an, “OBAMANATION” !!
    God ….thats good!!

So, did this experiment send a message to her liberal mom? HA!

  12. curvyred says:

How very open-minded of those liberals, nothing says love and tolerance like a death threat or go “crucifie yourself”

Speaking of love, tolerance and open-minded liberalism:

Radio DJ threatens Joe the Plumber, caution the language is offensive.

He (the DJ) has since been fired along with his engineer, but predictably seems to be playing the “victim card”

Glad to live in a Red State. My children and their friends are traditionalists, capitalists, conservatives – whatever you want to call them. They may be fighting an uphill battle, but they understand how and why we are the great nation that we are – in spite of the leftist nuts, not because of them…

  14. heather08 says:

Oak Park used to be a nice place to live, with K-8 neighborhood schools named after Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne and other famous American authors and leaders. When blacks started moving in along the eastern border, next to Chicago, the community changed in more ways than just the racial make-up. Hawthorne and Emerson elementary were made into middle schools, with all of the problems of middle schools plus racial tension, and the names were changed to Gwedolyn Brooks (a black poet) and Percy Julian (a black chemist) middle schools. Gay couples started moving in and set up a domestic partner registry. Crime rates grew in the eastern part and whites fled. Liberal whites now make sure they live in the school district with the most white kids (and claim it’s because of the higher test scores). The high school has security guards at every door. And the suburb that used to vote 90% Republican now vote 90% Democrat.

  15. gipper says:

I think this girl called in on Hannity. Yes, I’m sure it was her.

It’s amazing how the definition of tolerance has been upended. Originally, tolerance was defined as “putting up with another person’s belief with whom you disagree”. Not validating the other person’s belief, yet putting up with it. You could agree to disagree. Then, in the case of religion, the definition was changed to mean all religions are equal and equally valid–there’s no one true way to God. This is still believed by many. Finally, the definition of tolerance morphed into the antithesis of its original definition. That is, tolerance is “putting up with another person’s belief with whom agree“. If you disagree with someone’s belief, you are labeled intolerant or a bigot.

  16. JannyMae says:

Yes, Heather, I was there through that transitional period. I knew a man who was a member of the school board back in the mid 90’s and the racial tensions at the high school were VERY high.

Seems that someone at the high school took notice that the black students were disciplined more often than the whites, and that was hailed as an obvious sign of discrimination. After that, it was very difficult for the teachers to discipline black students.

Understandably, this caused resentments…they were still working them out when I left Illinois 7 years ago….

My understanding is that, in typical liberal fashion, the quality of the Oak Park schools keeps going down, while they keep passing referendum after referendum to throw more money into them.

This girl was brave to do what she did. I wonder if she was surprised at some of the reactions she got.

  17. Colonel1961 says:

Gipper, I believe it’s called ‘Newspeak’.

  18. therightguy says:

Intellectual terrorism is the tool of the left to stifle diversity of thought and beliefs. They have no respect of the rights of others in that respect. Ironically, it’s fascist and totalitarian. What they need is a mirror to see themselves for what they are: Intolerant, ignorant, biased, and bigoted reprobates that want to shout down, maim or kill because others do not believe as they do. Sounds a lot like the KKK to me.

  19. Professor_Repulso says:

Tolerance? Off-topic, but fed-up wops show some pop:

“Unauthorised patrols of several northern Italian cities have been underway for the last year and authorities have turned a blind eye to them as concerned locals fight back against rising crime rates.
“Under the proposals by the anti-immigration Northern League, the vigilante patrols would have the backing of the local police. The plan is now to be considered by the Italian Upper House.
“Another controversial proposal by the Northern League [is] the introduction of a referendum before a mosque or other place of worship is built.
“The League is part of centre right Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s coalition. Mr. Berlusconi was elected on a tough law and order campaign.
“Northern League MP Mario Borghezio said: ‘Thanks to the initiatives of the Northern League these ronde (vigilante) patrols will soon be working with the forces of law and order.
” ‘Now all honest citizens will no longer feel that they have to hand over the areas where they live to criminals, drug dealers and prostitutes. It’s a very proud day.’
“The Northern League is led by firebrand Umberto Bossi, who once said the Italian navy should shell boats carrying immigrants. In April’s general election it doubled its national vote to more than 8 per cent.
“The League capitalised on the fear of immigration with its election posters which showed an American Indian in a feathered headdress, with a caption saying: ‘They suffered immigration: Now they live in reserves.’ ”

From a story by Nick Pisa in the London Telegraph

The remark about ‘…criminals, drug dealers and prostitutes….’ brought to mind the regime change we are about to experience.

As an educator I am more saddened by the way the teachers reacted.

  21. DEZ says:

If that girl was 21, I would buy her a beer, she has more b**ls than any liberal leaning man I have ever met.
I am sure she has learned much more than the mush brained idiots that taunted her are ever capable of learning.
I am sure she learned Democrat and intolerant are interchangeable adverbs.

I’m sure Obama will push for school uniforms and a new kind of salute.

  23. DW says:

I’m glad the kid still has teeth left to smile with.
This story will be picked up by the AP, when…??? Hello ??? ..is this thing on…???

DW’s prediction -assuming this story goes anywhere: Look at the third last line in the story:

But she said she learned what it was like to be in the minority.

This will get spun in favour of whatever the minority-du-jour is (note: conservatives do NOT count as a minority -we’re the redcoats under King George V and the Imperial storm troopers under Darth Vader all rolled into one)

Kudo’s to the young lady though. I hope at least she (and her liberal mother) learned something from it -and I really hope she doesn’t become “Catherine the plumber”.
