Moscow Cops Bust Up Homosexual Rally

From a deeply outraged Associated Press:

Moscow police detain scores at gay pride rally

By David Nowak, Associated Press Writer

MOSCOW – Riot police broke up several gay rights demonstrations in Moscow on Saturday, hauling away scores of protesters hours before the capital hosted a major international pop music competition.

No injuries were reported, but the detentions could damage Russia’s desire to be seen as a modern nation as it holds the finals of the Eurovision song contest, a cultural event televised around the world.

City officials had warned that they would not tolerate marches or rallies supporting the rights of gays and lesbians, but activists had targeted Moscow and the Eurovision contest to press their claims that Russia officially sanctions homophobia.

Moscow police spokesman Anatoly Listovetsky said 40 people were detained, but media reports said up to 80 had been seized. None of the protests in central Moscow took place near the capital’s Olimpiysky Sports Complex, where the Eurovision concert being held live Saturday night.

Police seized gay rights advocates as well as some religious and nationalist protesters who staged counter-demonstrations. They also took away gay rights activists for talking to reporters, and ripped the bra and shirt off one female protester…

Among those detained Saturday were British activist Peter Tatchell and American activist Andy Thayer of Chicago, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network.

Tatchell and most of the others were detained during a hastily organized protest near Moscow State University in southwest Moscow, where about 30 protesters shouted "Homophobia is a disgrace of this country!" and "We are demanding equal rights!"

"This shows the Russian people are not free!" Tatchell yelled as he was being dragged to a police car. He was released a short time later

Tatchell said Russian gay rights leaders had appealed to Eurovision contestants to denounce the police crackdown from the stage at tonight’s competition. The live contest, which pits finalists from 24 different nations against each other, has drawn up to 100 million television viewers previously and is Europe’s most prestigious pop song competition.

"Today’s arrests go against the principles of Eurovision, which are about peace, harmony, cooperation and unity between all the peoples in Europe," Tatchell said.

Thayer was hustled off by police as he spoke with reporters.

"If … the right to assemble is taken away from lesbian and gay people here in Russia, then other Russians have to fear for their own freedom," Thayer said, just before police burst through a ring of journalists to take him away.

Police ripped the shirt and bra off one female protester, who identified herself as Ksenia Prilebskaya, and roughly pushed her into a police bus. Her glasses fell and she shrieked in apparent pain.

City authorities had barred Saturday’s rally, saying it was morally wrong.

"(Gay pride events) not only destroy moral foundations of our society, but also purposefully provoke disturbances that will threaten the lives and safety of Moscow residents and guests," City Hall spokesman Sergei Tsoi was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as saying Saturday.

At one rally a short walk from the Kremlin, about 50 demonstrators from nationalist and Orthodox Christian organizations denounced homosexuality. One man was detained when he alleged officials in the Kremlin were gay.

A half-dozen anti-gay rights demonstrators were also seized by police during a demonstration in Moscow’s central Pushkin Square.

Decades of official persecution of Russian gays ended in 1993 with the decriminalization of homosexuality, but opposition to gay rights remains widespread…

It sounds like these bravos were rounded up because they were not permitted to protest at this Russky ‘American Idol’ contest.

And not particularly because of their sexual persuasion. Indeed:

Police seized gay rights advocates as well as some religious and nationalist protesters who staged counter-demonstrations.

But isn’t it odd how we don’t hear about about the counter-protesters or get any photos of their arrests?

No injuries were reported, but the detentions could damage Russia’s desire to be seen as a modern nation…

It’s a good thing the Associated Press doesn’t have an agenda.

But notice that the AP never say such things about their idols in the Middle East.

A Gay Pride march in the Hungarian capital Budapest in July 2008. The International Day Against Homophobia, initiated by a Quebec organization, will be celebrated in more than 50 countries this weekend, decrying discrimination against gays and lesbians.

Also notice the coincidence of this spontaneous demonstration just happening on the International Day Against Homophobia.

What are the odds?

What I want to know is the % of queers in Russia, and China, and Africa.

Because if it’s a genetic affliction, the % has to be the same wherever you go right?

I mean, unless you believe that there are genetic differences between nationalities or, God forbid, races. And we really really know that can’t be, because if there were, then a race could be considered superior. And that is absolutely off the table. Science has disproven that so frequently that there isn’t even any scientific inquiry into it any longer. Kind of like global warming in that respect.

But strange, we never hear about the %’s of homosexuals among different groups. It must be because the scientific debate is over about that as well. Otherwise, there would be scientific inquiry.

And that tells us in no uncertain terms that it is impossible to challenge homosexuality in any way. They are born that way. Case closed.

So that proves that Russia (and probably China and Africa) is wrong.

But wait a minute, Russia is a better country than we are. How can they be doing something wrong with queers.

    My head hurts.

    • VMAN says:

Let’s just say for arguments sake that queers are born that way. People are born with birth defects every day and medical science is doing everything it can to cure them. A hole in the heart is a deviation from the norm. A deviated septum is not normal. Cycle cell anemia is a deviation from normal. Homosexuality is a deviation from what is normal. Any simple study of anatomy and procreation should convince any sane, rational person that homosexuality is a deviation from what is normal. I say all that to say this. What we need to do, if these people are born this way, is find a CURE!!!!!!! If it is learned behavior then they need to be CURED!!!!!!!!

    • proreason says:

VMAN, my point is that queers furiously insist it’s 1000% genetic, and therefore they will not allow a search for a cure or therapy or allow a search for environmental conditions that trigger homosexuality.

So, if you have a relative that is attracted toward homosexuality for whatever reason, not only can’t they get help, but they are encouraged to give into it.

And I think that is wrong.

And all the queers in the world screaming with bulging veins to the rooftops doesn’t affect my opinion an iota. Even if I’m wrong, I think it’s even more wrong for society to give into intimidation and abandon the search for the conditions that cause it.

VMAN, I think there is a possiblity that some might have a birth defect, but then with techonology today. Prehaps hormone treatment for those trying to go straight. I knew a man that liked girls. Few years later he was gay, and had changed his talk and walk. Cuban’s that escaped here in the late 70’s many were gays. Were they being prosecuted and why so many came to Florida. Isn’t it in the keys that so many live.

    So long, Andy Thayer!!

See you in 12 years or so………..maybe you can practice your “Show Tunes” routine in the Russian Gulag of Siberia.

  3. U NO HOO says:

I’m afraid that homophobia will become the same everywhere.

    • Liberals Demise says:

Why not? Seems homos are the same the world over!

      “We’re here …. we’re queer …. and we’re in your face!!”

Wow! A culture indoctrinated to be secular can actually find immorality in something, much less the highly celebrated condition of homosexuality? I thought that only Christian-based neanderthals like myself saw immorality in homosexuality.

  5. Barbie says:

Perhaps the officials think there’s not enough room in town for a Russia Mafia AND a Gay Mafia…

  6. kdouglaslee says:

Russian police arrest people because there is no right to free speech there, and the storyline is that Russians are homophobes? I mean, you do a story on this and forget to mention that what the police did was perfectly legal because they live in a fascist state with no freedom of speech?

The only difference between the leaders in Russian and the Democrats is this: whose speech is getting suppressed. In the USA, liberal gays get to suppress the speech of Christians and anyone else who stands in their way. In Russia, they are just one of many groups that get the same treatment that they mete out here.

  7. PatriotOne says:

Goodness gracious ~~ has Periz Hilton been informed of this outrage? I’ll wager he’d throw a hissy-fit against those homophobic Russian bullies ~~ calling them all sorts of profane names……

I wonder how the Russian government defines “marriage?” Perhaps Periz could inquire???

Actually, in the version of the AP story they’re featuring now, they’re displaying a picture of a couple of counter demonstrators getting hauled off, so at least they were balanced in their thuggery. Hopefully, the reports are accurate in that no one got hurt. But the police ripped the bra and shirt of a woman in attendance. That, plainly, wasn’t called for.

Uh, yeah. Please post a link to that story. I wasn’t able to find it.

    • gipper says:

Hmm, no response. I guess jurassicpork is just a drive-by fruiter.

      Pictures! I want pictures! Otherwise she(?) might have just been one of those cross-dressers I’ve heard about. ;-}

  10. canary says:

JohnMG, she might have something in her bra cups that were dangerous.

    • JohnMG says:

      Or not!

    • Liberals Demise says:

John ….. putting “D”s in a “C” cup could put a eye out upon release! These are dangerous times we live in.
With that being said …. we want pictures!!
