From a suddenly awakened McClatchy News:

Global terror alert inconsistent with U.S. portrayal of weakened al Qaida

By Hannah Allam and Lesley Clark | August 5, 2013

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s sweeping response to an alleged al Qaida plot – closing diplomatic posts in parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia – suggests a terrorist organization that’s capable of striking virtually anywhere, not the one U.S. officials have depicted as a group that’s near defeat.

The hell you say!

Counterterrorism analysts said Monday that the U.S. government’s global response to a threat emanating from Yemen, home to al Qaida’s most active affiliate, was at odds with how dismissive President Barack Obama was in a speech in May, when he said that “not every collection of thugs that labels themselves as al Qaida will pose a credible threat to the United States.”

That was only one of a series of public statements by Obama and his Cabinet members that played down the capabilities of al Qaida-linked groups. For at least the past two years, the administration has sought to reassure Americans that al Qaida is “on the run,” while counterterrorism experts were warning about the semiautonomous affiliates that have wreaked havoc in North Africa, Yemen, Iraq and Syria…

But Obama always knows more than any experts. He went to Harvard Law School.

However, this is the most newsworthy part of the story, which McClatchy buried in the fifth paragraph of their article:

U.S. officials have been secretive about what precise information led to the worldwide travel advisory and embassy closings, but a Yemeni official told McClatchy on Sunday that authorities had intercepted “clear orders” from al Qaida leader Ayman Zawahiri to Nasir al Wuhayshi, the head of the affiliate in Yemen, to carry out an attack…

This is a two-fer. It tells the bad guys to stay off those phones and it tells them who tipped off the US. All they have to do is track down the Yemeni officials who have been in touch with the US government.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press also does its best to supply the terrorists with up to date information:

State Dept. orders evacuation of embassy in Yemen

By DEB RIECHMANN | August 6, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department on Tuesday ordered the U.S. Embassy in Yemen evacuated as a result of the threat by al-Qaida that has triggered temporary shutdowns of 19 American diplomatic posts across the Middle East and Africa.

The department said in a travel warning that it had ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel from Yemen "due to the continued potential for terrorist attacks" and said U.S. citizens in Yemen should leave immediately because of an "extremely high" security threat level.

"U.S. citizens currently in Yemen should depart. As staff levels at the Embassy are restricted, our ability to assist U.S. citizens in an emergency and provide routine consular services remains limited and may be further constrained by the fluid security situation," the travel warning said…

We sure showed the terrorists. They won’t ever try to mess with that embassy again.

Meanwhile, the AP repeats this info, in case the terrorists missed the McClatchy and New York Times reports.

A U.S. intelligence official and a Mideast diplomat told The Associated Press that the current shutdown of embassies in the Middle East and Africa was instigated by an intercepted secret message between al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri and Nasser al-Wahishi, the leader of the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, about plans for a major terror attack. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly…

Because it’s a secret!

And CNN tries to help out, too:

US special forces on alert overseas to strike any potential Al Qaeda targets

By Barbara Starr | August 5, 2013

American special forces units overseas have been on alert for the past several days for a mission to attack potential al Qaeda targets if those behind the most recent terror threats against U.S. interests can be identified, a senior Obama administration official told CNN.

The official declined to identify the units or their locations because of the sensitive nature of the information. The units, along with several others, were put on heightened alert by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel last week…

Don’t worry. They’ll get around to leaking that information, too. If it will help ratchet up this story.

An intercepted message among senior al Qaeda operatives in the last several days raised concerns that led to the closures, CNN has learned.

Three sources said the United States has information that members of the Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are in the final stages of planning an unspecified attack.

But don’t tell anybody that we know!

Nothing new, Gen’l Grant kicked all the reporters out of
his army, and in WW 2 the Chicago Tribune carried a
story of a US Congress critter saying the Japs were
setting their torpedos incorrectly. And the beat goes on…
