Muslim-Like Car Bomb Found In Times Sq

From a wonderfully discreet MSNBC:

A police officer approaches the vehicle containing a car bomb, which stands with the door open and the police officer reaches down to lift one of the red canisters on the roadway at New York’s Times Square, NY, U.S.A., Sunday, May 2, 2010.

‘Could have been a very deadly event’

Official: Evidence is being recovered from car bomb found in Times Square

Sun., May 2, 2010

NEW YORK – Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on NBC’s "Meet the Press" on Sunday that authorities were recovering evidence from the car bomb discovered in New York’s Time Square.

Police found the "amateurish" but potentially powerful bomb in a smoking sport utility vehicle in the busy theater district on Saturday night, then cleared the streets of thousands of tourists so they could dismantle it.

Oh, well, if this car bomb was “amateurish” than we have nothing to worry about.

The vehicle was removed and most of Times Square was reopened on Sunday morning, NBC reported.

Officials were treating the incident as a potential terrorist attack, Napolitano said, though it was too soon to tell who is responsible.

Shouldn’t Mr. Obama issue a statement saying we shouldn’t jump to conclusions?

She added that investigators had no suspects but that they had recovered forensic evidence, including fingerprints, from the vehicle.

"We avoided what we could have been a very deadly event," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press conference earlier on Sunday. "It certainly could have exploded and had a pretty big fire and a decent amount of explosive impact."

But only in an “amateurish” way.

The mayor commended the actions of a T-shirt vendor — a Vietnam veteran, he said — who alerted a mounted policeman of an "unoccupied suspicious vehicle." The policeman observed that the SUV had smoke emerging from vents near the back seat and smelled of gunpowder.

After the vendor noticed the SUV, police cleared buildings and streets at the so-called "Crossroads of the World"; the area remained closed hours later. Officers were deployed around the area with heavy weapons on empty streets in the heart of busy midtown Manhattan.

A white robotic police arm then broke the windows of the dark colored Nissan pathfinder to remove any explosive devices.

Investigators removed three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

A black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered.

"I think the intent was to cause a significant ball of fire," Kelly said.

While he called the device "amateurish," Bloomberg said it could have been deadly.

"We are very lucky," he said.

A Connecticut license plate on the vehicle did not match up, according to authorities, who did not know a motive. Police interviewed the Connecticut car owner, who told police he had sent the plates to a nearby junkyard, Bloomberg said.

Police were reviewing surveillance video and looking for more.

New York Governor David Paterson called the incident an "act of terrorism."

"Luckily, no one is hurt, and now the full attention of city, state and federal law enforcement will be turned to bringing the guilty party to justice in this act of terrorism," he said in a statement.

Amazing the things you will say when you are desperate to get re-elected.

Officials said the device found Saturday was crudely constructed, but Islamic militants have used propane and compressed gas for years to enhance the force of explosives. Those instances include the 1983 suicide attack on the U.S. Marines barracks at the Beirut airport that killed 241 U.S. service members, and the 2007 attack on the international airport in Glasgow, Scotland.

In 2007 the U.S. military announced that an al-Qaida front group was using propane to rig car bombs in Iraq.

London’s theater district was also the target of a propane bomb attack in 2007, which may provide clues to American investigators.

In both cases, "the intention was to create a fireball" that would incinerate partygoers, Andy Hayman, Former Assistant Commissioner in charge of counterterrorism at New Scotland Yard, told msnbc.com.

No one was injured when police discovered two Mercedes loaded with nails packed around canisters of propane and gasoline outside of Tiger Tiger, a popular nightclub, on June 29, 2007

Notice how far down in the story MSNBC buries these minor details. It is first mentioned 33 paragraphs into the article.

Another detail that MSNBC omitted all together is reports that this car bomb was parked in front of the entrance to the Minskoff Theater showing ‘The Lion King,’ — a show aimed at children, and on a Saturday evening.

It should also be noted that the Minskoff Theater is in the Viacom Building. Lest we forget, Viacom owns Comedy Central, which in turn, produces ‘South Park.’

AP: Bomb-making materials taken from Times Square car
By Tom Hays And Cristian Salazar Apr 30 2010

NEW YORK – New York City police have removed bomb-making materials from a parked sports utility vehicle in Times Square, including propane tanks and a clock suspected to be a timing device.

Top police spokesman Paul Browne says investigators have also removed gasoline and explosive powders from the vehicle. An officer noticed smoke coming from the SUV around 6:30 p.m.

He says the Nissan Pathfinder’s license plates do not match the car’s registration.

NEW YORK (AP) — Police found a suspected car bomb in a parked sport utility vehicle Saturday evening in New York City’s Times Square, then evacuated buildings and cleared streets of thousands of tourists in the landmark known as the “Crossroads of the World.”

A mounted police officer noticed smoke coming from the SUV at 6:30 p.m., police said. Bomb investigators found propane tanks, powder and an apparent timing device inside,…

Some tourists reported hearing a small explosion hours after the car was first located.

Times Square lies about four traffic-choked miles north of the site where terrorists bombed the World Trade Center in 1993, then laid waste to it on Sept. 11, 2001.

FBI agents are on the scene with the New York Police Department, and the matter is being taken seriously, said Paul Bresson, head of the FBI’s public affairs office at bureau headquarters in Washington.

The Homeland Security Department is aware of the situation, but the NYPD has it under control and is investigating, said a Homeland Security official who spoke on condition of anonymity

The curtain at “God of Carnage” and “Red” opened a half hour later than usual, but the shows were not canceled, said spokesman Adrian Bryan-Brown.

Said Saunders: “There were too many people, too many cops. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg left early from the White House correspondent’s dinner Saturday night.

In March 2008, a hooded bicyclist hurled an explosive device at a military recruiting center in the heart of Times Square, producing a flash, smoke and full-scale emergency response.

Contributing to this report were AP Washington bureau chief Ron Fournier, and Associated Press writers Eileen Sullivan and Pete Yost in Washington and Michael Kuchwara in New York.

Once again this will be called an attempted terrorist attack. The smoke and explosions don’t count, anymore than the 4′ flames shooting up on the plane and a passenger jumping the muslim putting out the explosive chemicals cocktail.

Good news about the NYC bomb attempt. Obama was updated!

Obama updated on apparent NY car bomb

(AP) WASHINGTON – The White House said Sunday that President Barack Obama was being kept up to date on the investigation into the apparent car bomb found in New York City’s Times Square.

White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said in a statement that Obama, who attended an annual gala dinner Saturday night for White House news correspondents, praised the quick and effective response by the New York Police Department.

New York City police removed bomb-making materials from a parked sports utility vehicle in Times Square, including propane tanks and a clock suspected to be a timing device. They also removed gasoline and explosive powders from the vehicle.

Police said an officer noticed smoke coming from the SUV around 6:30 p.m. Saturday and police cleared the streets of thousands of theatergoers and tourists from the vicinity.

Shapiro said that Obama ordered his homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, to advise New York officials that the federal government was prepared to provide support.

Brennan and others will keep the president informed of progress made in the investigation, Shapiro said

Thank God we have the AP to let us know that somebody updated Barry about the car bomb and that they will keep him updated as time goes on.

A collective sigh must be ringing out in liberal elite hangouts in NY that somebody told Barry and that he knows now. They will sleep better tonight, though they will still be worried that somebody interrupted his basketball practice to give him the news.

In 8 or 9 days, we’ll learn that it wasn’t Muslim terrorism.

The perpetrators will be Muslim, but it will be an isolated incident that is perfectly understandable. They poor misunderstood people who did it will have been upset over having their cars keyed, or will have been jilted by girlfriends, or be mentally disfunctional in some other respect.

And how about that Homeland Security Department!!

Another triumph for them!!! Hope is really working out for big Sis and the country. Better lucky than skillful any day, I say.

    • canary says:

And Obama had no problem telling unfunny jokes after being notified. Just like he had no problem doing a shout out & cheering at the Native Indian tribal meeting after learning Ft. Hood Texas was attacked.
Michelle Obama really should not have poured creme in her coffee & stood up in front of the camera after Leno was easy on her making fun of her “children leave your behind behind”.

  3. proreason says:

Big Sis is really getting her act together.

First she had that Dutch filmmaker subdue the panty bomber.
Then she had that Fort Worth cop stop those DFW bombers for a traffic violation.
Now she has a T-shirt vendor in just the right spot at just the right time.

Bushhitler, by contrast, dissolved the Constitution, tapped our phones, killed a billion innocent women and children in Iraq, stole Iraq’s oil, bombed the World Trade Center, imposed Nazi rule in our country, and what did it get us…..other than 7 years of safety. And it quadrupled the national debt, which the boy king is still trying to deal with.

The new approach of depending on T-shirt vendors is so much more effective.

  4. BigOil says:

With so many distractions – how will the boy king find the time in the next six months to complete his destruction transformation of our flawed republic?

Oil spills, terrorist attacks, GM fraud, gun battles with Mexicans in Arizona…how can a tyrant maintain focus on the task at hand amongst all the minutiae?

  5. beautyofreason says:

    Don’t worry.

Napolitano will protect us from the dangerous right wing teabaggers undoubtedly responsible for this attack.

  6. crate says:

Taliban on youtube has taken credit… the link is no longer working…

  7. Dontmindme says:

Amatuer is right. From what the article says, assuming it’s accurate, this “bomb” may have ignited the inside of the car, burnt it and maybe the car next to it after a few minutes once the fire got going. Propane does not make a bomb. You first have to either heat it to high pressure to produce a BLEVE or explosively disperse it and then ignite it to produce a thermobaric bomb. Neither of which would have happened as described.

I love the use of the phrasse “incinerate partygoers”. Like there’d be nothing but charred remains or something. These guys are absolute fear mongers. I’m certainly not saying someone might not build a real bomb, but this wasn’t one. Like the attack at the Glasgow airport or the mentioned Tiger Tiger night club these idiots don’t know how to build a bomb. And the ironic thing is they had PHDs….

    • canary says:

      Dontmindme, you frighten me.

your amatuer [sic] knowledge is scary. Propane can easily explode. Your amatuer statement that “these” idots don’t know how to build a bomb. High tech bombs built by muslims have been stopped right smack in NY. Just putting the propane from tank into one of the other tanks full of propane in the SUV with a spark could have exploded. And perhaps it was a suicide bomb went wrong.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano frightens me. I guess she’s Obama’s token something. She’s an idiot, yet alone has great difficulty recalling what she says. Is she dumb or a liar.

Don’tmindme, even Bloomberg said it could have exploded and caused alot of impact.

Investigators removed three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

Don’tmindme, explosive in hollowed out batteries is the muslims new thing. Put the batteries in camera’s and board planes. Or one click and they kill over a dozen CIA agents.

And we are getting the soft story. Why? To keep people going to work, to keep tourism going, to keep consumers buying, to avoid placing panic & fear. Two
threats at Times Square now. Two WTC bombings.

    • Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

“I’m certainly not saying someone might not build a real bomb, but this wasn’t one.”

Correction Dmm, it may not have been a very efficient design, but it was still a bomb. 10 gallons of burning gasoline certainly could heat a propane canister to a sufficient temperature to cause the containers to burst and ignite.

  8. Mithrandir says:

I am not siding with the terrorists here, but they hate our foreign policy as much as American’s hate our domestic policy. –So, this is just going to have to be accepted unfortunately. (attacking soft targets like people plinking away at their typewriters in the WTC is cowardly)

Governments screw up economies, put the country in debt, start wars, oppress people through laws and intimidation, kill ‘legally’, oppress people through pay-to-play court systems/prisons/probation.

The U.S. Government is totally and completely hated inside and outside the country…..what did you expect?
