Mayor Ray Nagin Insists He Is “Only Human”

Which is mighty shocking to hear after all of Mayor Nagin's superhuman achievements. But there you are.

WWLTV has this amazing… er, scoop:

Nagin: "I am only human"

Thursday, January 19, 2006

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin continued to address the fierce backlash stemming from a speech he gave on Martin Luther King Day, in which he referred to New Orleans as a “chocolate city” and said God wanted the city to be predominantly African-American.

Mayor Ray Nagin said he would seek another term in office and believes his public record and sincerity will sway voters to re-elect him.

Appearing on the Eyewitness Morning News on Thursday, Nagin said he did not anticipate the frenzied response to his remarks.

“…Martin Luther King is a pretty significant hero for me and I got emotional,” Nagin said. “I’ve been walking around with…all this stuff I’ve been getting from these town hall meetings—lots of frustration, anger, feelings of hopelessness—and I don’t know what happened…It came out, it was inappropriate and I am in deep regret.”

Nagin said he has not contacted President Bush to discuss his comments that Hurricane Katrina was God's response to the war in Iraq and believes the President understands where he was coming from.

The Mayor reiterated serious regret for imputing God during Monday’s remarks.

“That’s the one thing I regret the most. The whole comments about God…it was a crazy moment and I have deep regrets about that,” Nagin said, adding that he made a mistake and hoped the citizens of New Orleans would forgive him.

“I am only human,” Nagin said.

Nagin also expressed plans to pursue a second term as Mayor.

“I’m not a quitter. I’ve never been a quitter in my entire life. I have a lot to offer this city. I want to finish this job. I have developed some pretty good relationships; both at the federal level, at the White House and the Congressional level. I can see anybody that I need to get to and I’m ready to go to work.”

The Mayor admitted he had received a mixed response from the public, including some e-mails calling for his resignation from office.

"I've gotten all sorts of feedback: super positive, in the middle, very negative. Resignation is one (of those responses), but also 'keep going on,' 'you're a breath of fresh air,'" Nagin said."

All too human, I'd say.

Nagin's also deluded if he thinks he will be re-elected. At least I hope he's deluded about that.
