Navy To Name Ship After Libeler Murtha

From a cheering Associated Press:

Navy to name warship for Murtha despite protests

By Andrew Miga, Associated Press – Tue Mar 1, 2011

WASHINGTON – The Navy says it is forging ahead with its decision to name a warship for the late Rep. John Murtha, despite protests the decorated Vietnam War veteran was disloyal in his 2006 accusation that Marines had murdered Iraqi civilians…

But the Navy says it is standing firm.

A spokeswoman for Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said he is sticking with his decision to name a warship for the Pennsylvania Democrat. Murtha, a retired Marine Reserves colonel and powerful former chairman of a House defense appropriations panel, died in February 2010 at age 77.

Somehow we suspect that the Navy is acting under the direct orders of the Commander In Chief. At least we hope so.

"The Secretary believes that the naming … honors Congressman Murtha’s lifetime of service to the Marine Corps, in Congress and to our nation," Capt. Beci Brenton said in an e-mail

Weren’t all those (alleged) defense contract kickbacks Mr. Murtha and his friends and family got for all those years enough reward?

A Murtha family spokesman, Matt Mazonkey, said the "family is humbled by the Navy’s decision to recognize and honor Chairman Murtha’s tireless work on behalf of our nation’s servicemembers and their families."

Of course we only saw his tireless efforts to undermine the nation’s servicemembers and their families.

The USS John P. Murtha will be an amphibious transport vessel able to carry 700 Marines, their equipment and supplies. Construction on the ship has not yet begun, said Brenton.

Murtha was a strong advocate on Capitol Hill for military personnel and a powerful inside player on congressional appropriations. He was accused of trading government funding promises for campaign donations, but the ethics probe was dropped in December 2009

The probe was only dropped once it became clear Mr. Murtha was about to drop dead.

Murtha infuriated conservatives as an outspoken and influential opponent of the Iraq war. That anger was further stoked in 2006 when he accused a squad of Marines of murdering Iraqi civilians "in cold blood" at Haditha.

Critics viewed Murtha’s comments as disloyal because he denounced the Marines before any investigation was concluded and the facts were known

What pickers of nits. Why not honor a man who knowingly and viciously slandered a branch of the Navy with a ship? A man who did everything in his power to put more of our soldiers at risk? A man who did everything in his power to defeat our military’s mission in Iraq?

At a Capitol Hill news conference in May 2006, Murtha predicted that a Pentagon war crimes investigation would show the Marines killed dozens of innocent Iraqi civilians in Haditha.

Actually, on that day Mr. Murtha proudly declared: "There was no firefight, there was no IED that killed these innocent people. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood." This was no ‘prediction.’ Mr. Murtha declared these statements as positive facts. And never mind that not one word turned out to be true.

In fact, Mr. Murtha had no way of knowing anything about Haditha at that point in time. He was only briefed on the subject after his remarks. But naturally our watchdog media was only too happy to run with his claims. And Mr. Murtha continued to repeat his smears as often as he could.

Still, make no mistake about it. Naming this ship after Murtha is Mr. Obama and the Democrat Party’s subtle way of thanking him for all the harm he did our military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. And this is their way of encouraging future John Murthas.

Indeed, as we noted at the time, Caroline and Ted Kennedy even gave Murtha a ‘Profiles In Courage’ Award in May of 2006 for his libels about the Marines in Haditha and his tireless work to bring about our defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan. (See photo above.)

There really are powerful people in our land who hate the US military and all it represents that much.

I have always found the practice of naming a vessel after a politician to be a bad idea.

The Somali Pirates have a ship named after Murtha.

This is what should be labeled the SS Murtha … http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/4319634331_64477f9155.jpg

Who would want to serve on a ship named the USS Dumbass?

  8. King says:

This is very interesting about Murtha. Google Murtha/Don Bailey/Vietnam. Wonder if the Navy has read this.

  9. BannedbytheTaliban says:

I see the family choose to recognize Murtha by his favorite title, Chairman Murtha. Just like his hero, Chairman Mao.

  10. Liberals Demise says:

I’ll try my best to keep this clean seeing I am a Marine and don’t
have “ANY” kind words for this dead chunk of monkey spunk.
AHEM……for the Dept. of the Navy to name a War Ship after a man
(who in my opinion) deserves the hot seat next to Arafat, Amin, Mao, Stalin,
Lenin, Teddy, Hitler, Benedict Arnold, ect., ect. (saving a seat for Hanoi Jane)
This crud took on his own Marine Corps to shamelessly foist his name
to the front page and slander fellow Marines.
Forever let his name, Dear Lord; be uttered in the same breath as John Kerry and allow it to mean as less.
King Neptune…….cast your blessings on the pollywogs and allow them
to become shellbacks. (from your humble subject & shellback and Order of the Blue Nose)
OOOooooo……the Corps should strike this with all it’s might but it
won’t. This “BLACK” mark won’t stop the Worlds Finest Fighting Force
    from completing its’ missions.

(side note: I wonder if any “Plank Holders” deep six their plank?)

Well, they could have a vessel named the USS Jimmy Carter. Oh, wait! Never mind…

  12. sheehanjihad says:

Murtha having a ship named after him is a disgrace. It shows the blank minded mentality of rewarding grifter anti American scum sucking pigs for denigrating our Military and showing just what left leaning con artist miserable hog plooking buttocks cleansers they are.

Murtha’s only honor is that he is dead. The only good way for that ship to serve properly is to make it into a punishment vessel for any and every person who has been before the mast or convicted in a courts martial for stealing, lying, cheating, dereliction of duty, cowardice, or aiding and giving comfort to the enemy.

Make it a ship for people who can never uphold the UCMJ, and crew it with the very likes of that fat pig traitor thief con man Murtha. The Dept. of the Navy has been shamed. Just like Murtha shamed the proud and the few. I am disgusted with this administration’s on going efforts to stain the military at every turn….and Murtha is a stain. A filthy reeking stain. The only good service to his country he did was to stop breathing. And not soon enough.

    • spiffyw says:

You nailed it sheehanjihad…. It’s a Bummer that naming these ships , after cronies,is so normal for them now ….Don’t Reward Corruption !

There aren’t many things I still comment on, either here or elsewhere. However, with CO’s and Command Master Chiefs being relieved for cause left and right and now this, naming a U. S. Navy ship for this sorry ass excuse for an American, this retired Command Master Chief grieves for his Navy.

I never thought I’d live long enough to see my Navy and our military sliding slowly into the sewer. The CNO, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of Defense and POTUS should hang their head in shame. If I were the current Master Chief of the Navy, I would resign immediately upon learning of this final decision. Unfortunately, our senior leadership political prostitutes aren’t in the leadership mode, but in the punch their ticket mode for post retirement talking head jobs at the various networks. Disgusting.

    • JohnMG says:

WI, I say this only to point out the obvious irony. What could be more appropriate than putting John Murtha’s name on an American Destroyer?

      ‘Tis a pity, indeed.

    • tranquil.night says:

I’m struck in particular as this being a parallel to Islamists who rush to establish victory mosques atop the sites where they massacre people.

  14. GypsyRN says:

If you want to honor someone, honor a Medal of Honor recipient with that honor. Murtha has discredited himself with the callous statements he rendered about the marines in Iraq. He was 180 degrees out of sync with those statements and never once retracted them when the truth came out. Makes me sick to think they would use his name to disgrace a ship rather then honoring it with someone who truly deserved it.

  15. Chuckk says:

It’s appropriate that there are 2 Kennedys in the pic with Murtha. Very telling.
