New Jobless Claims ‘Plunged’ Last Week

From an elated Reuters:

US jobless claims fell sharply last week

WASHINGTON, Sept 30 | Thu Sep 30, 2010

WASHINGTON, Sept 30 (Reuters) – New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits plunged by 16,000 last week to 453,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday, a steeper fall than had been anticipated in a sign that labor markets may be strengthening modestly.

Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast that claims would come in at 460,000.

16,000 jobs – when we are talking about almost a half million unemployed — does not sound like much of a "plunge" to us.

Especially since the number of new claims will probably be revised upward next week. Speaking of which:

The government revised the prior week’s figure up to 469,000 claims.

This is getting to be quite a pattern with the Labor Department. And, for some reason, the subsequent revisions are almost always for the worse.

Why is that?

Some well known company (wish I could remember who) had an advertisement with the tag-line “Expect the unexpected”.

Has the Department of Labor co-opted their line? I’m also remembering the old TV show ‘Truth or Consequences’. The 21st Century government version would be ‘Un-truths & No Consequences’–brought to you through “Obama-Vision”.

    OH BOY!!!!
Only 453,000 filed compared to the expected 460,000. That is a mere 7,000 off projection.
Pull out the champagne and party favors.

Again, Reuters are the cheerleaders for a failed “Hope and Change” promise.
Reuters…..get yo head outta yo a$$ and call it as it is. Less than 2 million per month are filing and all you can do is glorify that once again, it is below their expectations.

    Focused like a laser……….bullshiite!!

    I unexpectedly read this report.

It is not unexpected, but rather decidedly expected, that their course of action will always be to expect the expected and unexpect the unexpected.

16,000 is one per county per day on average, don’t lay off the clerks yet. But some states use telephone registration and an unemployed person doesn’t have to leave its home to apply for UC.

    469,000 – 453,000 = 16,000 hmmmmm……….

This is getting ridiculous. Kind of reminds me of Winston listening to the telescreen tell him they exceeded the expected quota of razors as he bemoans shaving with the same one for three weeks.

How could I have missed this : “New Jobless Claims ‘PLUNGED’ Last Week”

7,000 unfortunates losing jobs is a “PLUNGE”?
My math is fuzzy but it isn’t 16,000 as the say.
