New Jobless Claims Were Up In Prior Week

From the always obliging Associated Press:

Fewer Americans sought unemployment aid last week

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of people applying for unemployment benefits declined slightly last week, leaving applications above levels consistent with a healthy economy.

The Labor Department says weekly applications dropped 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 403,000. The department revised last week’s figure upward to 409,000

The AP only tells us about this revision to make it sound like this week’s dip is bigger than it is. In fact, the AP originally reported last week’s numbers as having dipped down to 404,000.

So it was a lie misinformation that the previous week’s claims had gone down by 1,000. Now that we have the revised numbers it turns out new claims for the prior week were actually up by 4,000 new claims.

But never mind those pesky details. The Obama administration got the headlines it wanted. So everyone is happy.

Still, these weekly shenanigans with the new jobless claims numbers remind us of the quote from Joseph Goebbels: “Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.”

Yes, but they were UNEXPECTEDLY up!

Imagine the virulence of the attacks we would be seeing if a Republican were in office.
