New York City To Hike Water Rate By 14%

From the New York Post:

April 3, 2009 — Talk about getting hosed during an economic recession.

The city has proposed a whopping 14 percent water rate hike starting July 1, officials said at a hearing this morning.

The Department of Environmental Protection claims its increased operating costs and a 6 percent decline in water consumption across the five boroughs this year as the reasons for the increase.

"We know an increase of any size is never easy – especially now," DEP Acting Commissioner Steve Lawitts told the Water Board.

A vote by the board on the proposed increases will take place later this spring.

The daily average water consumption now is an estimated 1 billion gallons.

Note that they are increasing the rate because consumption has gone down.

And why exactly should their “operating costs” have gone up?

Has the price of rain gone up?

Has the price of gravity gone up? (Which is how the reservoir system works.)

No, it’s just an excuse to raise more revenue to buy more votes from people who don’t work.

NYC is going back to the days of David Dinkins.

With the government coup of Wall Street, there simply won’t be enough wealth in the city to maintain the level of services it requires.

Which means that Bloomberg will be deposed and a new David Dinkins will be “elected”.

Anybody who can get out, should get out. Now.

California is about to fall to number three in the race race to join the 3rd world (behind Detroit and NYC).

Due to the severe recession, RB, Inc will be increasing sale prices 14%! Wow! If only it were that easy.

If RB, Inc. raised prices like government raise your taxes, levies & rates, WE’D BE OUT OF BUSINESS FASTER THAN OBAMA CAN TAKE A KNEE BEFORE THE SAUDI KING.

Butcher’s bakers & candle stick makers have known this for centuries. What keeps the political class for getting it? Ignorance or worse. Are they liars. I think we live under double jeapordy because it’s probably both.

“What keeps the political class for (from) getting it?”

The concept of efficiency isn’t in the government toolkit. If they did that, their power would not grow.

Hence, government is inherent negative toward the free market, where suppliers can only grow by improving.

This explains about 99% of the Moron’s strategy for misgoverning the country.

And Hitler was a 2 bit vegetarian house painter. He still managed to kill millions & wreck a great country.

Hey! You criticizing the Post Office? That’s “guberment run” so it HAS to be the right way to do it!

      (Just kidding! LOL)

“a 6 percent decline in water consumption ”

Wait, how can this be?? We’re in a global warming crisis (that word again) and the poor choice people need to drink more because of the sweltering heatwaves that run from Feb. through Nov. See, we should have listened to algore, and saved the water!

Hmmm, if I were living in New York, I’d be reverting back to the use of a chamber pot.

And I’d be dumping it out my window every morning or taking it to the gutter and leaving the contents there.

    See? Problem solved.

  5. Colonel1961 says:

Perhaps Madoff had ‘gravity’ in his fake portfolio (fauxfolio?) and the reservoirs are not so well-grounded after that. I’m just sayin’…

  6. Grzegorz says:

This should sound familiar, gang. Remember how Verizon jacked up a phone call from a booth from a quarter to $0.50? To justify the increase, they clamined that usage had fallen off due to cell phone users. Am I wrong in thinking that the price should have gone *down* in order to compete?

    • Right of the People says:

But, but, that’s CAPITALISM! The water department of NYC is a monopoly, they don’t have to play by the rules.

  7. Liberals Demise says:

What…we have here….is a blatant case of……couples showering together to save a precious resource. This practice must stop as it will lead to second hand smoke post coitus bliss and a population explosion!!

    • jobeth says:

Who can I see to get the water rates increased around here?

Put that way there just might be some benefits to the scheme……

  8. crosspatch says:

“And why exactly should their “operating costs” have gone up?”

Because people have retired and their benefits costs have gone up. They now have to pay more retirees on the same number of workers. It is the same problem all municipalities are going to face and it will mushroom as the boomers leave the workforce. Many are already paying more people on benefits than they have workers paying into the system. And the surplus funds they thought would cover that have evaporated due to the market collapse.

Put another way … the SEIU (primary union of government employees) is eating your lunch.

    How about fauxlio?

Rush was talking about Paterson saying raising taxes was good if it gets Rush to move.

Paterson, one swave and deboner guy.

  11. pdsand says:

Bottled water has been here for a decade, and I know people didn’t stop taking showers and whatnot. What could possibly have happened over the last year to decrease consumption by 6%? I heard something once about a lot of illegals going home due to the economy…

  12. Liberals Make Great Speedbumps says:

Don’t worry, once Summer arrives and all those po’ chilluns in Harlem and the Bronx let the fire hydrants run 24/7, I feel confident that consumption will reach usual levels.

  13. yadayada says:

hmmmm. in NYC they stuff the populace with water consevation propaganda. and so, water consumption goes down. revenue (mysteriously) goes down. humph. must raise rates to compensate.

CA stuff populace with fuel conservation propaganda and fuel consumption goes down. tax revenues (mysteriously) go down. humph. must raise fuel tax to compensate.

in ID, CA, WA, NY, FL, (oh what the heck- etc. x 50) they stuff the populace with electricity consevation propaganda, so consumption eventually goes down. tax revenues (mysteriously) go down. humph. must raise taxes to compensate.

what is the gubmint (and multitude of activsts in your area) demanding you to conserve?
