There are many more kinds of love. There is the love of Allaah, love of His Messenge and his companions, bla bla bla. The Christian churches advocates all those sorts of love as well, (but for Jesus instead of the "prophet", and for God instead of Allah, whoever that is). St. Valentine's Day is meant to honor the (potential) purity of romantic love, not to detract from the others ways of loving God and your fellow man. While I find I agree with this authors apparent disbelief in modern love, I have a hard time accepting that kind of criticism from an advocate of a system of religious law that allows men to marry up to four women, each as young as nine years old, and divorce them with a simple thrice-repeated declaration that could emerge from any spat. I know that's only practiced in the old school Sharia law, but still, to imply that we're the ones who are depraved knowing this is how The Prophet lived smacks of hypocrisy. Across the street from where I live is a gas station owned and staffed by Muslims (I think they are Afghani or Pakistani). They have a tent set up in the parking lot and they are selling Valentines' Day flowers and stuffed teddy bears. But because they are just earning a living it must be okay with Allah ...
