NOW Forced To Respond To Slur On Palin

From Fox News:

Bill Maher Calls Sarah Palin a Female Vulgarism, NOW Stays Mum

By Hollie McKay
March 22, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Bill Maher uttered a female vulgarism when referring to former Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin on his HBO show Friday night.

“Did you hear this – Sarah Palin finally heard what happened in Japan and she’s demanding that we invade ‘Tsunami,’” Maher said. “I mean she said, ‘These ‘Tsunamians’ will not get away with this.’ Oh speaking of dumb tw**s, did you…”

Maher was offering an imagined Palin response in an apparent attempt at humor, as Palin had made no such statement.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) refused to comment on Maher’s use of the derogatory term. A rep told FOXNews.com it is a “known fact” that NOW does not correspond with FOX News

Hilarious. And what is even more hilarious is what NOW does "correspond with."

Despite their claims, however, NOW was finally pressured into commenting on Mr. Maher’s bon mot, albeit kicking and screaming.

Indeed, as the Daily Caller points out, they felt the need to include a warning to all the evil ‘right-wingers’ out there:

NOW defends Palin against Maher attack, but says ‘We are on to you, right-wingers’

By Caroline May – 03/22/2011

In the wake of Bill Maher’s tasteless slur against Sarah Palin Friday night, in which he called the former Alaska governor a “tw**,” the National Organization for Woman (NOW) has not only denounced the use of such sexist words, but also issued a warning to conservatives who they believe are attempting to use the issue to discredit their organization: “We are on to you, right-wingers.”

“Listen, supposedly progressive men (ok, and women, too): Cut the crap! Stop degrading women with whom you disagree and/or don’t like by using female body terms or other gender-associated slurs,” Lisa Bennett, NOW communications director wrote in a statement.

In addition to chastising men (and women) like Maher who use their position as progressives as a shield against charges of sexism, NOW made it clear that their denouncement of Maher’s sexist remark toward Palin is in no way an endorsement of her or conservative policies.

“You’re trying to take up our time getting us to defend your friend Sarah Palin. If you keep us busy defending her, we have less time to defend women’s bodies from the onslaught of reproductive rights attacks and other threats to our freedom, safety, livelihood, etc,” wrote Bennett. “Sorry, but we can’t defend Palin or even Hillary Clinton from every sexist insult hurled at them in the media. That task would be impossible, and it would consume us. You know this would not be a productive way to fight for women’s equal rights, which is why you want us stuck in this morass.”

The organization contends that the calls for NOW to speak out against every sexist comment leveled against conservative women is an attempt by conservatives to make the organization appear hypocritical

Heaven forbid that NOW would appear hypocritical.

Bill Maher Calls Sarah Palin a Female Vulgarism, NOW Stays Mum

A rep told FOXNews.com it is a “known fact” that NOW does not correspond with FOX News.

Other women’s groups and publications did not have such policies in place.

“Widespread sexism in the media is one of the top problems facing women, and seriously affects women in politics. A highly toxic media environment persists for women candidates, and discourages all women – irrespective of political persuasion – from running for public office,” Yana Walton, Vice President of Communications at Women’s Media Center told FOXNews.com. “Despite the fact that women make up half of the population, we’re only 17 percent of congress. Bill Maher’s misogynistic comment about Sarah Palin hurts all women, not just Palin, and not just conservative women. By insulting her gender, rather than her platform or stance on issues, he insults women as a group.”

Terry Dougherty, editor of Women magazine, said “[Maher's] choice of words shows an enormous lack of respect for women. If his preceding joke had been about a man, I can’t imagine him using an equally derogatory term to describe a male. That type of language shows a lack of consideration toward women.”

Matthew Vadum, Senior Editor at the Capital Research Center in Washington DC, said Maher’s insults spotlight hypocrisy in the media.

“Bill Maher feels he can get away with such jaw-droppingly offensive verbal attacks on Sarah Palin because virtually the entire media-academia-entertainment complex agrees with him,” Vadum said. “Clinging to their political correctness and disdain for her quintessentially American values, the left-wing cocktail circuit regards Palin as a punch line.”

To be fair, NOW issued this non-response, response:

    http://www.examiner.com/conser.....arah-palin

After being called out by conservatives for refusing to speak to Fox News about Bill Maher’s vulgar insult of Sarah Palin, Lisa Bennett, Communications Director for the National Organization for (Liberal) Women issued a statement that failed to condemn Maher, and instead attacked conservatives for daring to notice their silence on the issue.

Her statement starts by asking progressives to “please” not use vulgar slang the way Maher did:

Listen, supposedly progressive men (ok, and women, too): Cut the crap! Stop degrading women with whom you disagree and/or don’t like by using female body terms or other gender-associated slurs. OK? Can you do that, please? If you think someone’s an idiot or a danger to the country, feel free to say so, but try to keep their sex out of it. Sexist insults have an impact on all women.

The remainder of her statement was nothing more than an attack on conservatives for noticing their overt hypocrisy:

    We’re on to you, right-wingers:

    a. You’re trying to take up our time getting us to defend your friend Sarah Palin. If you keep us busy defending her, we have less time to defend women’s bodies from the onslaught of reproductive rights attacks and other threats to our freedom, safety, livelihood, etc. Sorry, but we can’t defend Palin or even Hillary Clinton from every sexist insult hurled at them in the media. That task would be impossible, and it would consume us. You know this would not be a productive way to fight for women’s equal rights, which is why you want us stuck in this morass.

    b. As usual, you’re looking for any way to discredit NOW. You claim we care and work only for liberal woman, but that’s a LIE. We have defended Sarah Palin and other conservative women from sexist attacks. Maybe not on your schedule, but we’ve done so. And by the way, all those laws we advocate for — we don’t ask that they include a clause saying only certified liberal women can benefit from them. Conservative women benefit from them, too! Just because we don’t open up a Palin wing on the NOW website doesn’t mean we don’t think that every single woman — right, left and in-between — deserves equal pay, full reproductive rights, justice in the courts, etc. So knock off the facetious whining that right-wing women are not represented by NOW’s work.

    c. Prior to the emergence of Palin on the national scene: Where the heck were you when Hillary and Nancy Pelosi and other women were being demeaned in sexist ways? Did you speak up once on behalf of a woman politician before you learned the name Sarah Palin? Did you work toward equality for women in any way prior to August 2008? It would be nice to think that you’ve suddenly discovered sexism and are interested in joining us in the struggle for full equality. But this really smacks of the worst kind of hypocrisy: Folks with no history of working on an issue trying to discredit those who have been working for decades on the issue. Ridiculous.

That’s all I have to say on the matter. Now, back to business.

Hillary, Nancy Pelosi and “other women” were being “demeaned in sexist ways”? When? I googled that and found bupkiss.

And when has NOW ever defended Sarah Palin? I googled that too….I went through a great many pages and found…again….bupkiss. I would really like to know.

But I guess it’s good that NOW is “on to us right-wingers”. (Sounds like name-calling to me.)

If you keep us busy defending her, we have less time to defend women’s bodies from the onslaught of reproductive rights attacks and other threats to our freedom, safety, livelihood, etc,” wrote Bennett

Just go to now.org – It is all about 1) PP/Abortion funding and joining to fight the GOPs cutting of said funding, 2) about SS and GOP cuts to that and 3) an ERA to ‘make women equal to men’. . .

Until NOW stands up and rails against Gosnell (yeah, tell me to my face that abortion is safe now that an activist court ‘found’ a right to abortion in the Constitution 38 years ago), Sharia law, muslim treatment of women and include the ‘choice’ to remain at home as a viable option for women (not all women want to be men) – what they claim – is simply a lie.

And to pick and chose what women we defend – wow – how representative of NOW is that – but then it’s always been about their litmus test (abortion uber alles) for them – which is why I stopped listening decades ago.

All those years the cool kids stole his lunch money left emotional scars – something he has in common with POTUS. My money says Palin would kick his ass & not just in a debate on the issues.

Well, if I objected to Maher I’d have to disown all the lurid, slanderous, defamatory stuff I’ve written about Hillary over the years, of which there is plenty) including this item from 2008; which really is in bad taste (don’t say you weren’t warned)…AMERICAN PERFECTIONN, the Hillary Clinton Story, takes us on a journey back in time; back to the early 1970s; a golden age of buckboards and buggy rides, when Jim Croce and The Carpenters were topping the charts, when TV was ruled by Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda, when Butch and Sundance filled our movie screens, back to that lost time when the nubile Hillary, with her big glasses and her weird monobrow, first met Bill, with his “Vikingesque” beard and his long, flowingesque hair, the time when the Futures of America first met and fell in love. Let’s listen in on “Bill and Hillary’s First Date”!

Rated “R” for Clinton-related innuendo and lurid imagery.

“Go on, Baby. Don’t be afraid. Touch it” coaxed Bill.

“Gee, I don’t know, Bill” said Hillary. “I’ve never even seen one of these before, not in real life. Only in pictures. My parents are like totally strict about stuff like this”.

    “That’s okay. I understand. If you don’t want to there’s other girls…”

“No! I do! I really want to – honest. You’ll just have to show me what to do”.

“Sure, honey” said Bill. “No problem. There’s a first time for all of us. Here; watch me. First you take it in your hand like this…”

    “But it’s all sticky!”

“Don’t worry. It’s supposed to be like that. Here – see what I’m doing? Can you do that?”

    “Eoooww – it feels slimey”.

“That’s how it’s supposed to be; don’t worry. Try pinching it between two fingers – like this”.

    “I’ll try. Is this okay?”

    “That’s good – that’s real good. You’re a natural, baby”.

    “Now what?”

“Now you just put it in your mouth”.

    “Huh? All of it?”

“No, no; just as much as you can handle. It’s not very big, anyway”.

“Are you sure? What’ll it taste like? Is it nice?”

“You’ll like it – I promise. I really like the taste myself, you know. Especially when it’s extra cheesy”.

    “Well, okay. Here goes…”

“That’s great, honey. You’re doing real good, real good. Keep going…keep going”.

    “Mmmmppphhhfff…”

And that’s how Bill taught Hillary to eat pizza with her fingers. If you thought it was about anything else, that’s because you’re sick and you need help, you twisted pervert you.

I was going with a cheeseburger myself – sticky bun too woulda worked but from the looks of it, Ol’ Miss Rodham has had plenty of experience handling them (now that’s just not right!).

I’m sorry – I should talk, then again, I don’t wear corduroy – it’s against local fire codes.

We have defended Sarah Palin and other conservative women from sexist attacks.

I, umm, don’t remember their statement after this gem: [Language warning most especially if you read the entire rant]
    Pissed About Palin
    Cintra Wilson

Sarah Palin may be a lady, but she ain’t no woman.

I confess, it was pretty riveting when John McCain trotted out Sarah Palin for the first time. Like many people, I thought, “Damn, a hyperconservative, fuckable, Type A, antiabortion, Christian Stepford wife in a ‘sexy librarian’ costume — as a vice president?

Who even is a card-carrying member of the NOWISNOTRELEVANT now? They are so OVER!

And…I am pleased as punch to tell you all this…I do not know and do not want to know what the “tw**” word is. How out of it is that?

    Sign me,

Glad to be out of it

Greta Van Sustern was interviewing Sarah Palin tonight, and I thought I would split my sides laughing. They were discussing how conservative women are treated by the media, internet, etc, and especially the comment made by Maher (who has become so unhinged that he had to retreat to HBO when he lost his other gig), along with the response by NOW.\

Sarah Palin told Greta that she needed NOW like a fish needs a bicycle.

Now, for some of you too young to remember, back in the 70’s when NOW was really rolling, lots of women were wearing now t-shirts that said “A Woman Needs A Man Like A Fish Needs A Bicycle.” That saying was NOWs stock in trade.

How quick was Sarah to be able to tie her comments into a 40 year old motto of an organization that is desparately trying to remain relevant? And do it without a teleprompter to boot.

  9. Liberals Demise

Rush said it best years ago when he told America that NOW was the only place ugly (wo)men could get a stage and a hot microphone.
