NYC Board Endorses WTC ‘Muslim Center’

From an ecstatic New York Times:

Vote Endorses Muslim Center Near Ground Zero

May 25, 2010

After a raucous hearing, a Manhattan community board backed a proposal on Tuesday evening to build a Muslim community center near the World Trade Center.

And by “near,” they mean within 600 feet of where World Trade Center One once stood.

The 29-to-1 vote, with 10 abstentions, followed a four-hour back-and-forth between those who said the community center would be a monument to tolerance and those who believed it would be an affront to victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

There are at least 2,300 Mosques in the United States. There are few if any churches in the Muslim countries of the Middle East. If these people are such proponents of tolerance why don’t they use their money from the Saudis to erect a few churches in Saudi Arabia?

The board’s vote was advisory — it did not have the power to scrap plans for a center — but it was seen as an important barometer of community sentiment.

Which, in typical New York City fashion, they ignored.

Middle school students and rabbis were among the more than 100 people who testified at the hearing, which was held a short distance from ground zero. Some carried pictures of family members killed in the attacks; others brandished signs reading “Show respect for 9/11. No mosque!”

C. Lee Hanson, 77, whose son Peter was killed in the attacks, said he opposed the center not because he was intolerant, but because he believed that building a tribute to Islam so close to the World Trade Center would be insensitive

“When I look over there and I see a mosque, it’s going to hurt. Build it someplace else.”

Jean Grillo, 65, a writer from TriBeCa, said shutting out any faith undermined American values. “What better place to teach tolerance than at the very area where hate tried to kill tolerance?” she said

Saudi Arabia would be a better place.

As of 2002, there were currently at least 103 Mosques in New York City: 20 in Manhattan, 27 in Brooklyn, 28 in Queens, 20 in the Bronx and 8 on Staten Island. And that number has undoubtedly gone up.

There are no churches in Saudi Arabia. Zero. None.

Some of the board members who abstained said they wanted time to learn more about the Cordoba Initiative, but the board rejected a motion to delay the vote a month.

The days leading up to the vote were marked by a feverish exchange of words, culminating in remarks about Muslims from a leader of the Tea Party, Mark Williams, that were widely dismissed as racist

City officials, including Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg; the City Council speaker, Christine C. Quinn; and the Manhattan borough president, Scott M. Stringer, have rallied behind the proposal

Naturally. The officials of New York City have about as much respect for the opinions of its denizens as Mr. Obama has for those of most American citizens.

Which is to say none whatsoever.

These people are so damn tone deaf – it is going to get us all killed. Since 1979 – America has not done a damn thing except pay the middle east zillions for the privilege of enslaving our culture to the evil Big Oil princes who are living like kings while their population is under the boot of the religious zealots of their countries – and of course stand by Kuwait and Israel against the onslaught for Sharia Law & World Caliphate that the religious zealots (probably 90% of all practicing muslims) want to inflict upon the World – most especially Israel first. And still since 1979 – the terrorism, the spread of islamic ‘culture’ has increased until the pinnacle of September 11, 2001 – and still, and still the liberals continue to believe that if we bow down, kiss their collective a** (as it were) and bend over backward with PC stupidity to not offend them – that the radical islamic terrorists won’t attack us again – Will see us as a friend. Meanwhile – the radical islamic terrorists (opps I said it again) are establishing themselves not only inside America – but right at the foot of the very pinnacle of their terroristic success. And this idiot liberals are hell bent on helping them do it.

God it must be so damn hard to go through life so damn blind and stupid.

Rise up NY – before these fools tax and pander you into a historical footnote.

    Not NO but HELL NO.

God Help America – because those sworn into Office to protect and defend our Country, Constitution and the American Way of Life (other than the Armed Forces) are NOT.

If the masses aren’t awake yet, I fear they never will be. It is a disgrace that nothing has been built at ground zero thusfar. But to put a mosque on the site is not only a slap in the face to everyone who suffered on 9/11, it is a go ahead signal to the extremists to continue their war on America. It proves they are winning.

And it will be up and finished before the WTC repacement is even in the blueprint stage

      Totally disgusting!

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

I would say that it’s like building a Shinto shrine on the spot where the USS Arizona was sunk on Dec 7, 1941.

I’ll bet money that Nerobama will be speaking at this f***ing mohammadan bomb factory on Sept. 11th this year.

  4. proreason says:

You really have to wonder what the motivation is for the far left to support the moose limbs.

The moose limb objective is perfectly clear. The lefties are nuts, but at the level where this stuff gets approved, they aren’t stupid. They well know that the objective is to destroy western civilization, and all that goes along with that, including crushing homosexuals, and reducing women to burlap sex objects.

And I also don’t think it has anything whatsoever to do with “rights”. The libwits are the first to trample on “rights” when it suits their purposes.

And it can’t be about votes, like the illegal voting rights bill they want to pass. There aren’t enough Muslims in the country to make a difference.

So the usual suspects don’t make sense.

It must be money. A good bit of the communist / radical left has to be funded by Islam. It’s the only thing that can explain the unnatural love affair.

    • heykev says:

      Would agree Pro.

While Lefties are certifiable. Moose Limbs are Hitler-esque in the quest for world domination. Like you, I am perplexed at why anyone would believe Moose Limbs are a peaceful religion. It is not for women or anyone who disagrees with their misogynists beliefs

The Crusades from 1095 to 1291, were precipitated by Islamic provocations, centuries of bloody attempts to colonize the West, and sudden attacks on Christian pilgrims and holy places. Like a plague, Muslims continue their quest for world domination to this day in the hopes that they can bring us into the 2nd century.

  5. jobeth says:

While we are all up in the air (with valid reason) about the WTC mosque(s)…we are missing the symbolism of Flt 93 memorial-shaped exactly like a star and crescent and only off a couple of degrees as far as Mecca is concerned. THAT is just as shameful.

Or Take your pick of sites to visit… http://www.google.com/images?rlz=1T4GGLL_en&q=flight+93+memorial&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=BWL9S873N4LGlQfd-7ntDw&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CDAQsAQwAw

And we will continue to allow these cretins to do this to us! What in the hell is the matter with us?!

I heard about this on Neal boortz this morning. He explained and named a number of former Christian, Jew and Hindu religious sites beginning with the Dome of the Rock where muslims through the centuries have taken those sites and built mosques on top of them in order to make the point that muslims are superior to the rest.

This is more of the same.

Reminds me of watching a dog following another dog and marking the territory after the first.

Maybe that’s why they are so sensitive about dogs.

Only one vote against? 10 abstentions?

Smacks of unadulterated fear to me. That poor one brave soul who had the gonads to vote his beliefs is gonna be toast I’m afraid.
    He’s my hero though.

Shame on the abstentions…not everyone could be sick or otherwise too busy to fulfill their responsiblity.

And even more shame on the ones who voted to allow this!!!!!!!!!!

    • proreason says:

      Good catch, jobeth.

Nothing happens naturallly by a 29 to 1 vote, particularly about a subject something as contentious as this. If you asked the country at large, 65% would be against it. In NYC, the population is certainly against it by at least 50%.

Something else was going on. As you say, intimidation is likely, but it is also likely that the commission was stacked ahead of time.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

It’s a lie, jobeth. There’s NO WAY, with a vote result like that, that there could’ve been ANY “back-and-forth” let alone four hours worth. The media would like you to believe it was a heavily debated issue and that SOMEONE had the oratory skills to convince 99.96 of those who voted of “the right path”. However, properly dissected, such convincing is only heard of in movies and dime-store novels.

No, there was no “debate”. There was no “sudden and visionary change of opinion”. Nope, the vote was probably pretty close to a done deal and the actual voting a mere formality.

The m(a)dia is trying desperately to paint the picture that the dems are capable of deliberation and open debate when they themselves know that nothing of the sort exists. The question though, really, is “Why does the media even care at this point?” Their position is now well-known and there’s no longer any need to hide it.

    • Right of the People says:

Odds are there wasn’t even a vote. They just reported to the LSM what the vote was with the 1 dissenting and 10 “abstentions” (ahem) to make it look there was actually someone who was against it so it was a “fair” vote.

My questions are who are the members of this board? How did they achieve their position of power? Were they appointed or voted in?

I guess I’m just naturally cynical. I think the JDL (Jewish Defense League) and other groups should stage some protests over this travesty. It would be interesting to see the authorities response.

  7. beautyofreason says:

That public officials are expected to back this mosque is just another example of the downfall of modern American society.

50 years ago do you think our grandparents would have approved of the building of a “Japanese cultural center” within 100 feet less than ten years after the Pearl Harbor attacks? Or would Europeans have approved of a tribute to the Germans within 100 feet of the concentration camps at Munich or Dachau?

    How the mighty have fallen.

  8. Mithrandir says:

Do we need to teach anybody about tolerance? 911 was successfully carried out BECAUSE we were WAY too tolerant. Why do we need to “be an example” to scumbags? Terrorists don’t need to be shown that we are on higher moral ground, that is self-evident.

What the mosque is, is a sort of apology for our foreign policy that has angered the Muslim world. The cartoons, Iraq, Afghanistan, everything.

This is the appeasement factor of the liberal mindset. Don’t forget, they tried to give Hitler most of Europe before they drew a line in the sand. You have to do the same thing with Muslims. The only thing they respect is someone with a bigger threat, and is ready to use it.

  9. LarryG says:

This is from Gates of Vienna blog:

Abu Imran, leader of Sharia4Belgium –
Because we are Muslims and thus we are victors, who are here to dominate. And those who cannot accept the dominance of Islam will have to leave. For my part, to hell.”

Anjem Choudary, leader of the in England banned Islam4UK, sounded very threatening in Antwerp.
“We will only rest when the flag of Islam flies everywhere.”

Is this what you leftie sh*theads are looking for?

This is fail on so many levels. Completely off topic. Misspelled. Incoherent logic. Describes fictional event.
I miss the old days when they used to train the trolls before sending them to conservative sites.

  13. proreason says:

bob’s comment has an uncanny similarity to this famous event.

I’m not sure whether the floating object is bob or his commentary.

  14. BigOil says:

Pro – I thought of that same scene from Caddyshack yesterday when I saw the clip of Barry bending over to pick up and examine the tarball on the beach. In the immortal words of Bill Murray as he took a bite “Here it is…it’s no big deal”.

  15. Rusty Shackleford says:

    Hey there bob,

How does it feel, being the unwitting tool of the left with some puppetmaster’s hand up your ass? There’s no way you can think of these statements all on your own, judging from the grammar, spelling and choice of words.

Maybe that government-sponsored check should go to more reading/writing skills and less of the social drugs.
