NYC Gives Illegal $145K Deportation Gift

From the New York Post:

Illegal immigrant’s 145G ‘deport gift’

An illegal immigrant with a long rap sheet got a $145,000 parting gift from New York City taxpayers before he was deported, after a federal judge ruled his civil rights had been violated when he was held too long on Rikers Island.

Federal rules allow local law enforcement to detain suspected illegal immigrants for 48 hours after their criminal cases are resolved, to give Immigration and Customs Enforcement a chance to pick them up and move them to federal facilities.

Former Brooklyn resident Cecil Harvey, 55 — backed by an immigration-rights advocacy group — argued that his rights were violated when he spent more than a month in a Rikers holding pen before being transferred to ICE.

Harvey was shipped to his native Barbados in October 2007; the city settled his civil suit late last year.

The landmark settlement has prompted the Correction Department to dump scores of illegal immigrants on the streets, since federal officials often fail to pick them up within the required two-day window.

Mind you, these illegal aliens weren’t in detention for simply being in this country illegally. New York City is a sanctuary city.

Federal immigration agents have office space on Rikers Island, and the city allows them to interview roughly 4,000 inmates each year. They put a hold, or "detainer," on 3,200 of those inmates who they discover are illegals.

But ICE often fails to transfer those detainees within the required 48 hours of their criminal cases being resolved, multiple jail sources said.

"We just release them now," one high-ranking jail supervisor said. "It’s ICE’s problem to go find these guys."

The amazing thing is that Mr. Harvey was still deported.

He sounds like a model citizen.

Ironically, the fact that at least this slimeball is out of our country, means our society probably got a bargain at 145K.

“They put a hold, or “detainer,” on 3,200 of those inmates who they discover are illegals.”

How do the authorities know they are illegal? Simply by asking “for papers” means the illegals were racially profiled. Isn’t that grounds for an even bigger payout?

If you or I cost our company $145,000 in laziness, passing the buck and screw ups, and “It’s not my problem” excuses, (not to mention releasing criminals back onto the street for someone else to find again) we would be fired and probably sued.
Ah but this is government, and there are no consequences for doing a bad job and losing OTHER people’s money. ~Which again makes the case for limited government.

Didn’t Bloomberg give one-way tickets to other cities to the homeless? And just recently he invited the illegals from Arizona to come to NYC. What if most of them actually come to NYC and, being there are so many of them and no jobs or housing for them, they become homeless? An endless cycle. “I see”, said the blind man as he pissed into the wind, “it all comes back to me, now”.

Hey NY (and the other 49 states)!
    Money saving idea here!
Stop ’em at the border and you will save big bucks.
Not only that, they will not have their non-existent civil rights violated because they won’t have any not granted by their own country.
They might even be forced into saving their own country from becoming more third-world than it already is.
    Win-Win.
