Obama Picks Food Nazi To Head CDC

From an elated Reuters:

Obama names New York health chief to head CDC

By Matthew Bigg

ATLANTA (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Friday named a public health activist who made New York the first U.S. city to ban smoking in restaurants to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency charged with protecting Americans from illnesses ranging from heart disease to new flu strains.

Dr. Thomas Frieden, 48, New York’s top health official since January 2002, also made the city the country’s first to ban the use of trans fats, which clog arteries and raise the risk of heart disease, from food prepared in restaurants

Under Frieden’s leadership, New York in 2006 launched the country’s biggest community-based electronic health record project in an effort to improve preventive care…

Frieden has pressed for expanding routine testing for the AIDS virus as a first step to controlling it.

He will also likely follow the lead of former CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding in becoming a very visible spokesperson for the agency…

And if banning smoking and trans fats were not enough, here is another triumph from Dr. Frieden, via the archives of the New York Post:

DR. TOM’S NEW FOLLY

By JEFF STIER

July 22, 2008 – CITY Health Com missioner Thomas Frieden apparently didn’t notice the scandalous revelations about City Council "member items" earlier this year – at least, it hasn’t stopped him from jumping feet first into his own no-accountability giveaway.

His department is giving away 30,000 taxpayer-funded $2 coupons this month as part of its Health Bucks program – and says it may hand out "significantly more" later this summer.

Getting people to eat more fruits and vegetables is a worthwhile goal. But the plan invites corruption – and could worsen the problem it’s supposed to fix.

The department has so far been unable to explain to me a rationale for its system of distributing these vouchers, but it’s handing them out via sundry community groups – with no requirements on how the groups distribute them and no limits on how many Health Bucks can go to a single person.

Again, poorly monitored gifts to such groups were at the heart of the City Council’s member-items scandal. But that’s not the only problem here.

The coupons will supposedly help inner-city residents get purportedly hard-to-find vegetables for free. Like food stamps, they can pay for produce only at certain green markets – farmers markets out on the sidewalk, schoolyards or parks – in the South Bronx, Harlem and some Brooklyn neighborhoods…

Also, the program allows people to switch to organic produce – which is more expensive but no more nutrious.

Despite popular wisdom, organic produce is no safer or healthier than traditionally grown. In a new report, Joseph Rosen, emeritus professor of Food Toxicology at Rutgers University, concludes: "There were no differences in nutrient content between organically and conventionally grown crops."

Other food vouchers – like those in the federal Women, Infants and Children program – come with sensible rules requiring users to buy the least expensive product. Health Bucks, by contrast, are meant to go for green markets’ overpriced organic produce.

Nor do Health Bucks get people to change their overall eating behavior and food choices. Recipients can buy exotic purple potatoes on the taxpayer tab – and make tasty, fattening mashed potatoes – but that’s no boon to health. But it’s all just peachy as far as the Health Department is concerned: As a department spokesperson told me, "Potatoes are vegetables, too."

In short, the program is more of Frieden’s smug, psuedoscientific elitism – spending taxpayer dollars (with no apparent awareness of the potential for abuse) to try to get poor people to adopt a trend that’s grown popular with the better-off…

Clearly he has his priorities in order.

The department has so far been unable to explain to me a rationale for its system of distributing these vouchers, but it’s handing them out via sundry community groups – with no requirements on how the groups distribute them and no limits on how many Health Bucks can go to a single person.

We certainly don’t want ACORN’s community organizers going without arugula.

Frieden must of going to church with o-blah-blah. Isn’t this one of (the not-so) reverrend wright’s banner issues – AIDS testing.

Great! More idiocy. We can hope this guy hasn’t paid his taxes ever. Of course that’d clinch the job.

Everything comes back to the same core theme.

They have to control your life for you. You simply aren’t capable.

    What narcassists.

Personally, I’m glad the Wright Brothers didn’t believe the truth of the day about man’s inability to fly, and I’m glad Gutenberg didn’t believe the truth of the day about copying books, and a million other truths that are oh so…yesterday.

But of course, I’m absolutely convinced about bad cholesterol, or is it good cholesterol, or whatever it is today.

I have a friend who’s a rock-ribbed conservative in every way, except when you start talking about trans fats. Oh my goodness, I simply can’t convince him that none of the “studies” that talk about trans fats are worth the paper they’re written on. I even broke out my old statistics textbook and read about how all of the correlation studies as a matter of scientific fact do not indicate causation, he just couldn’t get it. I guess no one’s perfect.

Dr. Tom Frieden is, of course, America’s foremost advocate on behalf of the soybean. As he recently advised the managers of the USDA school lunch program, “The soybean is a much more sturdy, nutritious, and economical plant than all the extravagant foods which our wasteful, self-indulgent youth have come to expect in their diet. Soybeans make an excellent substitute for bread, cereals, meat, chicken, fish, milk, cheese, jello, and alternative green leafy vegetables, and if all schools, hospitals, and nursing homes were compelled to adopt soybeans as our staple diet, it would solve the national food and health crises in one stroke, alleviate global warming by reducing cattle herds and greening our planet, and, moreover, make it possible for Americans to feed millions more of the huddled masses flowing to our teeming shores.” Dr. Tom noted, in passing, that the national soybean program could be achieved without undue mitigation of Pres. Obama’s biofuels production goals. Dr. Tom also made the telling point that, in this time of national crisis, with so many people going hungry and gathering in the streets in “Tea Parties” to demand relief, it is our duty to eat our way back to prosperity by adapting ourselves to this simple, wholesome, pure, nutritious, and organic foodstuff––the incredible, edible soybean.

Red Alert! Soybean-centric diet coming soon to a school, hospital, nursing home near you.

Note to self – grow soybeans in backyard, apply for farm subsidy.

    • Petronius says:

Helena: “grow soybeans in backyard, apply for farm subsidy.”

AP and Reuters report that Mrs. Marian Robinson (Michelle’s mama) is putting a quarter acre into soybeans on the White House lawn. It’s a little secret, just the Robinsons’ affair.

Figures that a blowhard knucklehead nanny stater wouldn’t have any idea how bad soy is for American health.

Ask any gym rat, body builder or fitness competitor … just mention soy and watch the horror pop out in their expression. Soy is another way to say estrogen. If your goal is to further feminize the American male, soy is just the ticket. At a biologic level. (goodbye, testosterone) Also, for Caucasian races soy is as disagreeable to the digestive system as eating ground glass … we lack a particular enzyme that neutralizes soy’s effect on the intestinal epithelial layer that is abundant in Asian races. So, if you want a big dose of estrogen and to eat off the inner layer of your digestive tract leading to leaky gut syndrome, permeable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome … grab a big bowl of soy. For Caucasians the aforementioned syndromes lead to http://altmedicine.about.com/od/healthconditionsdisease/a/TestLeakyGut.htm

Also, it pays to bear in mind this quote (regarding the real job of Cabinet level appointees)

“The thing that bugs me, is that people think the FDA is protecting them. It isn’t. The FDA is protecting the profits of the corporations that pay us and the politicians.”  Herbert Lay, M.D. Former FDA Commissioner

Dr. Tom says, “The inhabitants of the Peoples’ Republic of China have thrived on the soybean for centuries. There is a great deal that we Americans can learn from the peoples of the Orient.” His line of soy products, including “Dr. Tom’s Trail Bar,” are now available in the new beef jerky flavor. Consumers can find it in most convenience stores and in the grocery and sporting goods aisles at WalMart. I got mine at the guns and ammo counter at the WalMart in Boone.

It’s unfortunate that the left embraces new age pseudoscience so readily, extending to even so-called health foods. There’s no evidence that organic produce is superior to regular produce, or that genetically modified crops are worse than regular crops. But that doesn’t stop them from condemning “franken food” whenever they an. Due to efforts by “environmental activists” like Greenpeace the country of Zambia rejected food aid because the yields had been genetically modified. Rejected ood aid, to a starving country! The scare tactics are incredible…..also if we only relied on organic produce then the earth could only produce enough food for 1 billion LESS people than we currently have.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

But that doesn’t stop them from condemning “franken food” whenever they (c)an.

Would that be “Al” franken food?

    • proreason says:

      “There’s no evidence ”

They have been taught that feelings and intent trump evidence every time. It took 3 or 4 decades to do it, but the job is now complete.

It’s much easier to manipulate them that way.
