NYT: ACORN Victim Of Right Wing Hit Job

From the ‘Politics’ section of the always objective New York Times:

Conservatives Draw Blood From Acorn, Favored Foe

By SCOTT SHANE

September 16, 2009

WASHINGTON — For months during last year’s presidential race, conservatives sought to tar the Obama campaign with accusations of voter fraud and other transgressions by the national community organizing group Acorn, which had done some work for the campaign.

But it took amateur actors, posing as a prostitute and a pimp and recorded on hidden cameras in visits to Acorn offices, to send government officials scrambling in recent days to sever ties with the organization.

Conservative advocates and broadcasters were gleeful about the success of the tactics in exposing Acorn workers, who appeared to blithely encourage prostitution and tax evasion. It was, in effect, the latest scalp claimed by those on the right who have made no secret of their hope to weaken the Obama administration by attacking allies and appointees they view as leftist.

The Acorn controversy came a week after the resignation of Van Jones, a White House environmental official attacked by conservatives, led by Glenn Beck of Fox News Channel, for once signing a petition suggesting that Bush administration officials might have deliberately permitted the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Even before Mr. Jones stepped down, Mr. Beck had sent a message to supporters on Twitter urging them to “find everything you can” on three other Obama appointees.

Conservatives believe that they have hit upon a winning formula for such attacks: mobilizing people to dig up dirt, trumpeting it on talk radio and television, prompting Congress to weigh in and demanding action from the Obama administration

The undercover videos showed a scantily dressed young woman, Hannah Giles, posing as a prostitute, while a young man, James O’Keefe, played her pimp…

Mr. O’Keefe, 25, a filmmaker and conservative activist, was dressed so outlandishly that he might have been playing in a risqué high school play. But in the footage made public — initially by a new Web site, BigGovernment.com — Acorn employees raised no objections to the criminal plans. Instead, they eagerly counseled the couple on how to hide their activities from the authorities, avoid taxes and make the brothel scheme work…

In a statement over the weekend, Bertha Lewis, the chief organizer for Acorn, said the bogus prostitute and pimp had spent months visiting numerous Acorn offices, including those in San Diego, Los Angeles, Miami and Philadelphia, before getting the responses they were looking for.

“I cannot and I will not defend the actions of the workers depicted in the video, who have since been terminated,” Ms. Lewis wrote. But she defended the group’s overall record and said it had become “the boogeyman for the right wing and its echo chambers.”

Robert L. Borosage, co-director of the liberal Campaign for America’s Future, called the tactics used to go after Mr. Jones and Acorn “McCarthyite,” and said the critics were harping on minor failings and distorting records that over all were admirable. “This is dangerous stuff,” Mr. Borosage said. “I don’t think progressives will sit back and let this gain momentum.”

What a perfect example of what passes for journalism at the New York Times.

Did you realize that Van Jones was only “attacked by conservatives led by Glenn Beck of Fox News Channel, for once signing a petition suggesting that Bush administration officials might have deliberately permitted the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks”?

Did you realize it is a fact that “Conservatives believe that they have hit upon a winning formula for such attacks: mobilizing people to dig up dirt, trumpeting it on talk radio and television, prompting Congress to weigh in and demanding action from the Obama administration?”

Did you realize that ACORN has just become a punching bag for the right and its echo chamber?

It’s information like this that makes us realize that its editor Bill Keller was right when he proclaimed that “the country has never needed [the New York Times] more than it does today.”

And speaking of their heroic journalism, you recognize the name of the author of this piece, Scott Shane?

For one thing, Mr. Shane is the intrepid New York Times reporter who released the name of a CIA interrogator who questioned Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and other high-level Al Qaeda prisoners.

Never mind that the interrogator did nothing illegal.  And that by publishing his name Mr. Shane was putting him at personal risk of retaliation from terrorists who have a long history of such retaliation.

And never mind that there was absolutely no news value whatsoever in releasing the interrogator’s name.

No, that was ‘journalism,’ at least as the New York Times practices it.

And never mind that Mr. Shane and his bosses at The Times had made no bones about expressing their opposition to interrogating captured terrorists, and indeed the war on terrorism in general. – They aren’t activists pushing their cause. They are highly respected journalists.

But should someone ferret out real news about an organization that has received untold millions of taxpayer dollars, that has a history of voter fraud and much else – well, that is just unacceptable.

Mr. O’Keefe and Ms. Giles are just “amateur actors,” “conservative activists” with an agenda who are “digging up dirt,” “after another scalp” "out to draw blood," from their "favored foes." And, of course, they are just doing the bidding of the rightwing noise machine, the conservative broadcasters like Glenn Beck.

They are nothing like the ‘Newspaper Of Record’ at all.

“I don’t think progressives will sit back and let this gain momentum.” …

Well, it’s clear the New York Times got the message from the radical left masters.

They will never let such "dangerous stuff" "gain momentum."

Scott Shane apparently, did not read Obama’s self-admittance statement on how the Democrats went through with a fine tooth comb to find any dirt they could on Republicans, to include his own admittance of being the luckiest politican alive elected because of last moment scandle on his opponent’s divorce, that got him elected.
Obama mis-claiming there is an arguement between either big government or no government, leads to his comment it’s an issue of

“…we must either tolerate forty-six million without health insurance or embrace “socialized medicine.” Barack Obama the Audacity of Hope
We have a new generation now, that see’s nothing wrong with such deviant activities. Obama’s assurance that ACORN will be the ones to help him build and run America, is as sick a picture of hard-core muslims insistance in running Middle-Eastern country. Even moderate muslims in America, might wake up and notice Obama is not an example of a good muslim, they thought him to be.

  2. BillK says:

Yes, it’s the right that digs up dirt and tries to smear people with it.

Unlike say, George Soros or that great conservative, Larry Flynt.

  3. proreason says:

The New York Times is a fringe Left-wing radical organization.

  4. Rusty Shackleford says:

Again, when lefties do it, it’s “social justice”

When the right does it, it’s a “crime”.

If you have a good double-standard, you stick with it.

  5. Reality Bytes says:

I sure hope this story has a “Happy Ending”.

  6. MinnesotaRush says:

“For months during last year’s presidential race, conservatives sought to tar the Obama campaign with accusations of voter fraud and other transgressions by the national community organizing group Acorn, ..”

Conservatives, as well as SEVERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND OFFICIALS, Mr. Shane, you lamebrain!!!

Your precious ACORN (and its’ branches and TRAINERS) was founded for dirty purposes, has been dirty, remains to be dirty, and will coninue to be dirty for as long as they are able to operate under any banner. Get real!

  7. texaspsue says:

So they’re “victims” and we’re “racists”. There….. problem solved. (Unbelievable.) I don’t think Gov. Schwarzenegger got the memo as (according to article up at Drudge) he is going to launch a full investigation into ALL Acorn activities in California. I hope Gov. Perry follows his lead and does the same. :-)

  8. canary says:

5th video – San Diego, ACORN asistant offers to traffic young girls from Tiawana for the posers, saying he is from there and has “connections” who will help them traffic young girls. Hit’s on the posing prostitute. She said, it was the most frightening of all the experiences with sex offenders.

  9. VMAN says:

Right off the bat the NYT uses the phrase “conservatives sought to tar the Obama campaign”. I think the use of the word “tar” is no mistake as it brings up visions if black people being tarred and feathered. Now That may be subliminal but that’s what these people do.. Make no mistake these people are master wordsmiths. Conservatives tell the truth (for the most part) and liberals twist the truth.

You want a couple of hit jobs – How about Tom Delay – just about (as Chair of the Ethics committee) to look into a Dem scandal and all of a sudden Ricky Earl manages to get the 6th Grand Jury to indict him. Fast forward – Earl is out, Delay is out, the Dems got another seat and another step toward the majority – the Dems got their Ethics investigation ‘disappeared’ and oh by the way – no trial for Delay. Now where did I hear about something like that after it?

Oh yeah a guy named Foley smeared as a sex pervert. Hassert stated that an investigation was done (while the young ‘victim’ was a page) and while distasteful – nothing unethical occurred. So within that touchy 30 days (thanks McAmnesty/Feingold) before an election, low and behold this icky email appears – Foley is charged – drops out – laws don’t allow the Repubs to put another name in and the Dems got another seat and another step toward a majority. Fast forward – the charges dropped (when it came out that the email was sent after the guy was 1) no longer a page and 2) over 18 slimy yes, illegal no, Foley is gone and smeared into obliviation. Now where did I hear about something like that after it?

Oh yeah, the lil ole Hockey Mom from Alaska – Sarah Palin. Charges (what was it 18 lawsuits) but let us not forget the Dem headed, Dem inspired Troopergate that went on and on and on – netting nothing but implications, smears and lies (probably all on our taxpayer dime too). Smeared (to this day) by a statement that She did not make but rather an idiot (although I have to say a real spot on interpretation) actress made in a comedic sketch. I don’t know who comes off as the most stupid in this scenario – the stupid masses out there who believed it – or the DNC operatives that passed it as fact – or the idiots who still to this day use the tag line ‘I can see Russia from my house’? Not a whit of truth, yet smear away to this day. Oh btw, don’t forget they managed to not only smear the campaign (shouldn’t have bothered with McAmnesty as the head of the ticket, it wasn’t a winner anyway) – but managed to get from office one of the few Govs who wasn’t buying the Porkulus money – don’t you wonder about the Stanford affair ‘suddenly’ exploding – when he too was against Porkulus money for his state? Convenient, coincidence – or intentional?

Yeah, the conservatives/right are the only ones who use one single (all though if you look at ________fill in the blank – Jones, ACORN, etc from the Obama Administration – all have a long line of interconnection, deceit, graft, corruption, and anti-American ideas, beliefs and agendas) minor mistake and blow it up to drive the person/organization away. Yeah – project much DNC/NYTs/Liberals?
