NYT: Chaos Makes Muslims Kill Each Other

From those tireless defenders of the faith at the New York Times:

For Somalia, Chaos Breeds Religious War

May 24, 2009

DUSA MARREB, Somalia — From men of peace, the Sufi clerics suddenly became men of war.

Their shrines were being destroyed. Their imams were being murdered. Their tolerant beliefs were under withering attack.

So the moderate Sufi scholars recently did what so many other men have chosen to do in anarchic Somalia: they picked up guns and entered the killing business, in this case to fight back against the Shabab, one of the most fearsome extremist Muslim groups in Africa.

“Clan wars, political wars, we were always careful to stay out of those,” said Sheik Omar Mohamed Farah, a Sufi leader. “But this time, it was religious.”

In the past few months, a new axis of conflict has opened up in Somalia, an essentially government-less nation ripped apart by rival clans since 1991. Now, in a definitive shift, fighters from different clans are forming alliances and battling one another along religious lines, with deeply devout men on both sides charging into firefights with checkered head scarves, assault rifles and dusty Korans.

It is an Islamist versus Islamist war, and the Sufi scholars are part of a broader moderate Islamist movement that Western nations are counting on to repel Somalia’s increasingly powerful extremists. Whether Somalia becomes a terrorist incubator and a genuine regional threat — which is already beginning to happen, with hundreds of heavily armed foreign jihadists flocking here to fight for the Shabab — or whether this country finally steadies itself and ends the years of hunger, misery and bloodshed may hinge on who wins these battles in the next few months.

“We’re on terra incognito,” said Rashid Abdi, an analyst at the International Crisis Group, a nonprofit group that tries to prevent deadly conflicts. “Before, everything was clan. Now we are beginning to see the contours of an ideological, sectarian war in Somalia for the first time, and that scares me.”

For two years, Islamist insurgents waged a fierce war against Somalia’s transitional government and the thousands of Ethiopian troops protecting it. In January, the insurgents seemed to get what they wanted: the Ethiopians pulled out; an unpopular president walked away; and moderate Islamists took the helm of the internationally recognized transitional government of Somalia, raising hopes for peace.

But since then, the verdict on the moderates has been mixed. In the past two weeks, the Shabab have routed government forces in Mogadishu, the capital. The tiny bit of the city the government controls is shrinking, block by block, and Ethiopian troops have once again crossed the border and are standing by. As many as 150 people have been killed, and the relentless mortar fire has spawned streams of shell-shocked civilians trudging into the arid countryside, where they face the worst drought in a decade.

If Mogadishu falls, Somalia will be dragged deeper into the violent morass that the United Nations, the United States and other Western countries have tried hard to stanch, and the country will fragment even further into warring factions, with radical Islamists probably on top.

But out here, on the wind-whipped plains of Somalia’s central region, it is a different story. The moderates are holding their own, and the newly minted Sufi militia is about the only local group to go toe-to-toe with the Shabab and win…

Many Somalis say that the Sufi version of Islam, which stresses tolerance, mysticism and a personal relationship with God, is more congruent with their traditions than the Wahhabi Islam espoused by the Shabab, which calls for strict separation of the sexes and harsh punishments like amputations and stonings…

Out here, the Sufis are moving ahead with their own small administration, meeting with United Nations officials and running patrols. At night, in a circle under a tree, they rest their AK-47s on their Korans, drop their foreheads to the earth and pray.

“We have jihad, too,” said Sheik Omar, a tall man with a long beard and warm eyes. “But it’s inner jihad, a struggle to be pure.”

This is a laughably pathetic exegesis, even by the standards of the New York Times.

The “Muslim insurgents” in Somalia are terrorists. They are in the thrall of Osama Bin Laden.

They have sought full control in the area (and indeed, the world) for years. And there has never been any hope that their victory would bring peace to that benighted country.

And the chaos that they speak about is the chaos caused by these very same Mohammedan bravos.

That The Times would pretend that the war in Somalia is entering a new phase or that “moderate Muslims” will turn it around is hilarious.

(It wasn’t that long ago that our media masters were openly rooting for the Musselmen militants terrorists, if they have ever stopped.)

But it’s all part and parcel of their relentlessly propagandizing for the ‘Religion Of Peace.’

No matter how thin the reed.

The Religion of Peas is as close to peace as that bunch gets. Interesting Op-Ed in today’s Washington Times about the Muslim takeover of Europe. It truly is scary.

It’s taken since 1979 for these losers to finally find the answer and of course it comes from deepest Africa – except that deepest Africa has been a hotbed of chaos for – oh a few centuries – and has had the Arabs muslims slaving away there for a few decades too.

Me thinks that once again the ole Grey Lady is too busy spreading lies and innuendo to even know what the truth is anymore.

But never forget, we must always admire their intentions – even if it gets us killed!

  3. VMAN says:

The problem is that we have tried to stop Muslims from killing each other. When they’re are killing each other then they don’t bother us. It was kinda nice when the CIA was running around destabilizing governments so that the rabble was killing each other and leaving us alone.

    • GL0120 says:

Yes indeed, I too long for a return of the good old days when worldwide rabble was too busy screwing and killing each other to bother with us. We need to get back to those times.

Once again, it’s the liberals’ mantra that everything bad that people do is someone else’s fault.

For example, when was the last time a celebrity was accused of becoming a dope addict simply because they made a stupid choice? No, it was the “pressures of always being in demand…of living up to the fans’ expectations”

Likewise, the spin about muslims killing one another is right slap in-line with why blacks kill each other in the US. It’s the result of “social pressures” or “the local environment” or even “peer pressure”.

Yet not one single “journalist” will have the huevos to state flatly and plainly that a person simply CHOSE to be violent and to kill.

Looking at it another way, those in this country who are tree-hugging whale lovers who have found it frustrating when faced with conservatives who know the truth about human behavior; Specifically BAD human behavior, instead turn to outside the nation’s borders and are now blaming the Mexicans having AK-47’s (not manufactured in the US) on gun-sellers in the US, or prostitution in foreign lands on the insatiable sexual appetite of US citizens (while at the same time, claiming that perverts who rape and kill children are “just people too”) and that all the world’s problems are due to the US simply existing and creating an “imbalance of fairness” a nebulous term at best and a completely idiotic concept at worst.

We have a president who apologizes to the world for us being prosperous and not following the ways of the Europeans, while he himself gorges on the tit of the public’s money. We have an administration that longs for all things 1960’s and that anger against “the man” is now rearing its ugly head and thus, they want to dismantle the system and turn it into a love-in. (Side note, one of the biggest problems in communes in the 1960’s was fights over girlfriends and personal property)

Meanwhile, the whole thing is turning into a garage sale at the United States’ house and no one seems to be able, or care to stop it.

I’m right along with a lot of people though who say, “Let them kill themselves”. I personally find it disgusting, very primitive and also very sad. But I’m not interested in the US wasting any resources to save them from themselves. If liberals cannot understand why the US became a huge economic power then they can go **** themselves. If they are feeling guilty that the US has so much and everybody else so little then they can start by giving up all they own and then moving away and letting the people who work and set up their lives to better themselves have the nation.

I’m sick of it. I’m sick of Mogadishu, Rwanda, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, go-screw-youselfistan, Russia, China…..all of it. One world? The Utopian mega-wet-dream of the liberal?

Get over it. Sure, nice dream. But everybody wakes up from even the most beautiful of dreams.

Simply by saying “the muslims are just misunderstood” doesn’t make them stop wanting to kill us.

Wake up. Grow up. Get away from me.

Bingo. My thought exactly. I second that motion. Great post, Rusty.

Obama is a disgrace to his Father and ancestors. He could have been their savior, instead he chose America to shame and disgrace because he is a selfish, Kenyan. Obama’s father would be ashamed of him. Should done like him, used America for education, and go back and help your people. His mother too. Goes to college in America with grants, and says Americans are not her people.

How long has this “pipedream do-gooder nonprofit” been around and what’s their outcome stats look like?

Good grief! The International Crisis Group.

    • JohnMG says:

Next, you’ll see “The International Crisis Group for Obama” listed on his web site. Their logo is an ‘Obama symbol talking head’ stuck up somebody’s ass.

  7. The Redneck says:

Didn’t we once have troops in Somalia, doing something to stop these warlords and the constant warfare? I seem to remember some people wanted to finish the job there, instead of running away…..

  8. canary says:

Obama needs all the global friends he can get. Obama rants and raves to the world, pretending America is holding him prisoner, begging for them to free him, from a country he despises. Maybe, when he figures out which country hates us the most, he will break free and move there, where he belongs.

  9. opaz says:

You make a good point that the extremists who took of the government were hardly moderate muslims and that only the NY Times could find such a development hopeful. I think that the you missed, however, the point about moderate Sufi muslims standing up successfuly to the Wahabbi militias. I think this is a very hopeful development that should not be discounted. In most Muslim countries such as Iran or Saudi Arabia any moderates are terrified and do nothing and just try to stay under the radar. It is good to see moderate muslims standing up for themselves and fighting the extremists in Somalia.
