NYT Gave $116K Discount For “Betray Us” Ad

From the New York Post:

TIMES GIVES LEFTIES A HEFTY DISCOUNT FOR ‘BETRAY US’ AD

By CHARLES HURT Bureau Chief

September 13, 2007 — WASHINGTON - The New York Times dramatically slashed its normal rates for a full-page advertisement for MoveOn.org’s ad questioning the integrity of Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq.

Headlined “Cooking the Books for the White House,” the ad which ran in Monday’s Times says Petraeus is “a military man constantly at war with the facts” and concluded - even before he testified before Congress - that “General Petraeus is likely to become General Betray Us.”

According to Abbe Serphos, director of public relations for the Times, “the open rate for an ad of that size and type is $181,692.”

A spokesman for MoveOn.org confirmed to The Post that the liberal activist group had paid only $65,000 for the ad - a reduction of more than $116,000 from the stated rate.

A Post reporter who called the Times advertising department yesterday without identifying himself was quoted a price of $167,000 for a full-page black-and-white ad on a Monday.

Serphos declined to confirm the price and refused to offer any inkling for why the paper would give MoveOn.org such a discounted price.

Citing the shared liberal bent of the group and the Times, one Republican aide on Capitol Hill speculated that it was the “family discount.”

I’m surprised they had to pay anything at all for the ad,” the GOP staffer said. “They could have just asked the editorial page to run it and it wouldn’t have cost them a cent.”

Just as we suspected from the start.

The NYT should be forced to declare the $116,000 as a campaign contribution. And it’s probably an illegal campaign contribution at that.

But the “paper of treason” is always eager to do whatever it can to betray our country, no matter the cost.

Anyone have $66K lying around because I’d like to take the same full page add using the identical photo with the caption:

    General Petraeus He
    Fights for Us!!!

Just a thought. Rush (aka Pontif of Truth), thanks for turning me onto Sweetness & Light.

I hope they keep it up. This paper is “gospel” for the MSM. The NYT’s continuing and accelerating evolution into an extreme, far left rag will only hasten the already declining reputation of all MSM. This decision to run the ad along with the “discount” will not affect its subscriber base. Heck, anyone with even half an open mind dropped their subscriptions years ago.

  3. low profile

What will the NYT stockholders have to say about this? Cutting ad rates means hurting the bottom line. Advertising is the newspaper’s lifeblood. Why isn’t another group suing NYT for unfair business practices?

This could mean that subscribers will have to pay more for their New York Times. Somebody has to pay for losing $116K.

  4. rhahn

The smart money dumped their NYT stock a long time ago. This includes any liberals with half a brain that actually believe the crap that the NYT foists on its readers. They may love the NYT “slant”, but they are not going to risk THEIR “hard earned”, (inherited), money on NYT stock.

  5. Gila Monster

I wonder if the NY Slimes would give the same $116K discount to a conservative group wishing to run a full page add in support of Gen. Petraeus? Not likely..!!

Wish I had just won a lottery of some kind, it would be interesting to find out if the Slimes would play fair. The fun part would be the subsequent lawsuit over discriminatory pricing practices.

  6. Reality Bytes

HOW ABOUT A 15 SECOND SPOT ON FOX SHOWING THE NYT AD IN FULL:

    GENERAL PETREUS OR
    GENERAL BETRAY US

FADE OUT “OR GENERAL BETRAY US”

FADE IN “HE FIGHTS FOR US”.

This is probably a better idea than rerunning in the NYT. More people will see it not to mention when you factor in half wit NYT subscribers with fully brained viewers of FOX, it will have an even greater impact.

I think that this really is a stunning example of the dangerous, vile behaviors that the Dems, msm and lunatic left have kept ‘undercover’ by protecting each other now being exposed by the bloggers and the Internet. . .These people have blithly gone on for ages held unaccountable because they have provided cover and deflection for each other and as the msm was in accord with it all and part of the problem - the World has been led astray by the lies, distortions and coverups - which are now being exposed for all to see/read.

The service you, SG and others of your ilk - actually on both sides of the aisle - provide will, I think, be the impetus for the coming revolution to return America to her more Constitutionally Governed and the Greatness of the Past. As the bs, duplicity, lies, cheating and outright hypocrisy of the dems/left can no longer be hidden nor are they even grasping at how quickly their vile behavior is being exposed. This is just another nail in their coffin - they are not only treasonous slime, corrupt double dealers - but they are stupid beyond belief. And apparently either can’t learn and adjust or are so consumed by their bds and/or power trips that they can’t/won’t change their behaviors. Or worse, they don’t even give a damn - which is truly dangerous to America and her future.

Thank you SG for being on the cutting edge of returning truth, honesty and dignity to the United States of America. And I find it humbling to be allowed to post here. God I do love the real grassroots movements. In America they can still affect real change.

[SG - is this smaltzy enough or should I try harder?]

    From The Hill:

Giuliani demands MoveOn’s New York Times ad rate

    By Sam Youngman
    September 13, 2007

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) said Thursday that he is asking The New York Times for the “same heavily discounted rate they gave MoveOn.org” for his campaign to run an ad in Friday’s paper.

Giuliani, calling MoveOn.org’s controversial “General Betray Us” ad “abominable,” said his campaign is asking the paper for a comparable rate for an ad to run following President Bush’s speech on Iraq.

The former mayor said his ad “will obviously take the opposite view” from MoveOn.org, which argued in its ad that Gen. David Petraeus is “cooking the books” on Iraq and cherry-picking facts that support his recommendation to keep a large number of troops in Iraq for some time.

Giuliani continued to include Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in his criticisms for her comments that it would take “a willing suspension of disbelief” to accept at face value Petraeus’s report on the situation in Iraq. Giuliani interpreted Clinton’s remarks at a hearing earlier this week as questioning the general’s integrity.

“We think that her attack on Gen. Petraeus was a follow-up to the MoveOn.org/Times attack,” Giuliani told reporters in Atlanta.

Giuliani reiterated that he agrees with Petraeus’s assessment of the Iraq war, and called MoveOn.org’s ad attacking “an American general in a time of war” unprecedented.

“It’s time for Americans to really insist that American politicians move beyond character assassination,” Giuliani said. “And this is exactly what they tried to do with Gen. Petraeus. Well, it’s one thing when politicians do it to each other. It’s another thing when it’s done to an American general who has put his life at risk to protect us.”

That’s far more than necessary. Thanks so much, WM.

SG….I concur with WM…..”Thank you SG for being on the cutting edge of returning truth, honesty and dignity to the United States of America. And I find it humbling to be allowed to post here. God I do love the real grassroots movements. In America they can still affect real change”.

SG….You called this one correctly yesterday…you never let us down. Thank you, again!!!!!

Any insight into what Giuliani is going to have in his ad??????

“Uncle Jimbo” over at “Blackfive” has filed a complaint with the FEC over this ad……http://www.blackfive.net/main/2007/09/complaint-filed.html

  11. SG

“Any insight into what Giuliani is going to have in his ad?”

No, I just saw the article I posted above.

But I would almost hate to see him giving any money to the New York Times.

And I doubt if any of the NYT’s subscribers could be shamed.

SG,Thanks for the preview of Giuliani’s NYT ad. Too cool for words! That’s one copy of the NYT that I will definitely purchase. That would be hilarious if tomorrows paper had a record sells.

I can’t wait to see how the Democrats are going to spin this.

  14. euroconservative

“But I would almost hate to see him giving any money to the New York Times.”

SG - I like to think of it as Rudy actually taking money from the Slimes - assuming he gets the discount and they would otherwise get the full un-discounted price for another ad on that page.

    Thanks for the posting that

texaspsue - I completely understand why you would want to purchase that copy of the Slimes - but that would be counterproductive. Considering you wouldn’t normally purchase it, you would only be giving back to them the money Rudy would be taking from them, albeit a tiny amount. OK, you’re only one person, but what if 100,000 conservative minded people did the same thing?

I’d suggest going to the local library and photcopying the ad.

  15. DW

I’d suggest going to the local library and photcopying the ad.

Or just printing it from your computer.

I see what you’re getting at re record sales, Tex, but I fear it would be completely lost on the people at the Times. And even if it wasn’t, for damned sure you’d never heard about it from them.

  16. texaspsue

euroconservative and DW…you’re both right! I slipped into a moment of fantasy, thinking we lived in a propaganda-free world. ( I AM a cock-eyed optimist troll)

I’m really disappointed in Drudge & Fox news, who usually tiptoe on the edge of being “fair&balanced, …but, when the move-on ad came out it was all over the headlines, complete with an example of ad……Rudy’s ad comes out and they mention it but still emphasize the move.on ad. The more incidents that happen like this, the more proof I see of how censured free speech in America has become.

After we free Iraq…..who is going to come over and free the U.S.A.????

  17. wardmama4

So it is Friday AM - did the NYTs come through or are they the crapweasels I think they are?

  18. wardmama4

Texaspsue - The same US Armed Forces that are freeing Iraq. All the Armed Forces need to do is Vote against the very people and Party that smears them (every chance they get), discount them or their vote (every chance they get - never forget Al Gore attempting to throw out all of FL military absentee ballots), underfund them (every vote taken) and ignore them (always).

2 million in uniform and their spouses could really set the DNC and their nominee back on their haunches for years to come.

  19. Warmonger Infidel

WM4…..if only that were true, conservatives would always control the WH and the congress. However, when you take the total force (approximately 2,000,000 including reserves) and spread the numbers out over all 50 states and territories, the leverage is decreased considerably. Then factor in those in the military that vote democrat (and a considerable number do) and it dilutes the leverage even more. You could also factor in military retirees (like me) but to be honest, I don’t have any data on how we as a community vote. Same with spouses. I don’t believe you’ll find active duty spouses voting in lockstep with their military spouse, but I’m just guessing at that.

My point is that neither party is particularly concerned with how the military community votes because if they were, we wouldn’t have a lot of the pay and benefit issues that we currently face, both for those on active duty and for those of us retired. Don’t forget, the republicans had both houses and the WH for 6 years and a lot of these issues didn’t get resolved. So I don’t thinkt the argument that military will always vote conservative really holds water. Overall, I believe we pretty much vote along the same lines as the civilian population.

  20. Reality Bytes

    May I make a proposal?

I propose that the next President of The United States BE REQUIRED to have a Special Guest at least once a month for the entire term of his (or her) presidency.

I propose that the President be required to receive & to be substantially available during the Special Guest’s stay, which would extend for three days starting either Thursday through the following Sunday, or Friday through the following Monday.

I propose that the Special Guest selection be limited to members of the US Armed Forces with special consideration given to those members with ranks between private & sergeant.

I submit this proposal under the condition that if it were enacted that the program NOT BE USED FOR POLITICAL & THAT PUBLIC MEDIA EXPSOURE be severly restricted.

The purpose of this proposed program would be for The President to spend substantial time with the Special Guest in order to gain first hand the impact of serving one’s country through the military has on one’s private life & for the purposes of making a first hand connection with individuals’ whose lives are too often forgotten except during all too brief ceremonial holiday events.

Of course, depending on next year’s election results, the program may never get off the ground anyway because there may become difficult in finding volunteers.

  21. wardmama4

WI - yes you are correct that waaaay too many on the R side of the aisle became gutless as far as National security and always re: the military - because it is so damn easy to do - who in America really, truly gives a crap but them, their families and the Veterans. Which as you point out is not a huge percentage of the total population.

My point is that if and when true conservatives and the Military wake up and see the real vile attitude that the lunatic left fringe has for America, American ideals and the Armed Forces - yes I do think that combined their vote can (and more importantly will) - many times since 2001 - we have dragged our family members who lean too far left back to center simply by rational, fact driven conversations - when they hear the truth from someone who is living it - they can’t support the garbage.

And that is how it is going to happen - And this particular ad was just so offensive, so over the line - there is no defense for it at all.

    Where does the time go.

It seems like only yesterday the NYT was trying to destroy our chances in Iraq.

Of course, come to think of it, they were doing it yesterday as well.
