NYT: Polls Show Most Support Obama’s Agenda

From the New York Times:

Polls Show Dissatisfaction With Country’s Direction, but Support for Obama’s Agenda

By DALIA SUSSMAN | February 12, 2013

Just ahead of President Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, new polls find continued public dissatisfaction with the direction of the country, yet support for several of the policies the president has said he will push in his second term.

Which is exactly the opposite of what Gallup reported the day before yesterday. According to Gallup, the public disapproves of every Obama policy except for his handling of defense. (Which is hilarious enough.) Indeed, the NYT probably published this piece to rebut such dangerous reporting.

A new CBS News poll found that the economy remains the public’s chief concern, with fewer than half of Americans approving of Mr. Obama’s handling of it. Most Americans also say the president lacks a clear plan for solving the nation’s problems. And 54 percent say the country is on the wrong track.

And never mind that the economy is far and away the most important issue of the day. And the direction of the country is pretty important, too.

Yet looking ahead, more than 6 in 10 Americans say it is at least somewhat likely that the president will bring about significant changes to immigration policy and about two-thirds say so about gun policy.

"Significant changes" aren’t the same as good changes. In fact, they could make things significantly worse. Moreover, all of the polls we have seen on amnesty and gun control do not support Obama.

And on several issues, the CBS News poll finds a majority of Americans are in the president’s corner. Most, 59 percent, back a combination of spending cuts and tax increases to reduce the deficit;

Obama does not support any spending cuts. So this does not support Obama at all.

53 percent say gun control laws should be made more strict;

If this is even true, it is a sudden change. And it will probably change back, once the hysteria has passed.

53 percent support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants currently working in the United States;

We simply don’t believe this. Not if the people being polled understand that this means amnesty.

and 71 percent favor carrying out drone strikes against suspected terrorists.

This matches Gallup’s findings. But does the public approve Obama uses of drones against US citizens?

In a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, a majority of Americans, 56 percent, expressed a negative view of the country’s political system. And underscoring the task facing Senator Marco Rubio of Florida as he prepares to deliver the Republican response to Mr. Obama’s address,

55 percent say they have an unfavorable view of the policies Congressional Republicans will pursue in the next four years. The president fares better, with 52 percent saying they have a favorable impression of the policies he will pursue in his second term, and 43 percent expressing an unfavorable impression.

You see how much trouble the Republicans are in? They should just give up now and listen to the will of the people as expressed by Barack Obama.

(But, naturally, The Times never says how much these polls oversampled Democrats. The ABC/WP polls usually oversample by 7%. But The Times doesn’t want to confuse their readers with such minor details.)

The important thing here is to establish that Obama has a mandate from the people. And even if he has to bypass Congress, the elected representatives of the people, he is doing the people’s bidding.

Which is exactly what every dictator has claimed throughout history, from Caesar to Hugo Chavez.

One Response to “NYT: Polls Show Most Support Obama’s Agenda”

  1. How can anyone support the president’s agenda when he refuses to say what his agenda actually is? He uses code language and smoke and mirrors to speak and say nothing. He says he wants the middle class to grow, but every policy he has rammed down our throats for 4 years has done the opposite. He says he wants security, but every policy he espouses opens our society to the greatest threats to our security both here and abroad. Ask our ambassador to Libya! He says he wants to reduce the debt and in the same breath speaks of spending more and more money, which we don’t have, on more green companies. Hello… Solyndra? He says he wants to create jobs while his actual policies are forcing more businesses to close because they can’t afford their new Obama tax burden. He says he wants everyone to have health insurance and access to healthcare. Everyone HAD access to healthcare under existing law, and Obamacare is not only bankrupting the insurance industry, it is driving the cost of healthcare higher than ever before.

    Perhaps when they poll these people they should be more specific about whether they support the rhetoric, or the reality of Obama.
