NYT: Recession Has Killed Global Warming

From the (insufferable) New York Times:

Is Environmentalism a Luxury Good?

August 3, 2010

Add environmentalism to the long list of things the Great Recession may have successfully pulverized.

That is one implication of a new working paper titled “Environmental Concern and the Business Cycle: The Chilling Effect of Recession,” by Matthew E. Kahn at U.C.L.A and Matthew J. Kotchen at Yale. Using survey data, it finds that high unemployment rates are associated with less concern for the environment and greater skepticism about global warming.

From the study’s abstract:

[W]e find that an increase in a state’s unemployment rate decreases Google searches for “global warming” and increases searches for “unemployment,” and that the effect differs according to a state’s political ideology.

From national surveys, we find that an increase in a state’s unemployment rate is associated with a decrease in the probability that residents think global warming is happening and reduced support for the U.S to target policies intended to mitigate global warming. Finally, in California, we find that an increase in a county’s unemployment rate is associated with a significant decrease in county residents choosing the environment as the most important policy issue.

No wonder the BP spill hasn’t galvanized as much support for a climate bill as many advocates had initially hoped.

Boo hoo. (And never mind that the BP spill has not been anywhere near the ecological holocaust that the environmentalists has hoped for.)

Perhaps the public reaction would have been different if the accident had occurred  when the economy was booming.

Perhaps the public has realized that you really don’t need to implement the environmental movement’s agenda when the economy has already been destroyed. It’s redundant.

But better luck next time.

No scientific facts killed “Global Warming” and cooked the ignorant goose.
    Now let it die.

Never trust the people. They are only interested in their own good….not the good of the Ruling Class.

Steve, you need to start a “laugh-for-the-day” section. This is certainly a candidate. But then, 99.9999% of what the “news-media” reports is just that–laughable.

My question to “journalists” is this: “Does global warming only happen in the US? I mean, while the US is falling on its ass, economically, China is ramping up production, starting up coal-fired powerplants and buying cars at record rates. So, are they experiencing global warming in China or is it a phenomenon based only on being a conservative?”

Let them chew on that for awhile.

Damn Rusty, you are so cynical. The Slimes has spoken, that should be good enough for you and the rest of the masses.

And of course it only happens in developed countries, they’re the only ones who could afford to pay for the “climate scientists’ ” salaries. You don’t hear of any “Climate change” research think tanks in Botswana do you? Therefore there must not be any “global warming” there, they can’t afford it.

      Get with Der Leader’s program!
