Obama Appoints Wife Of Univision Owner To UN

From the Miami Herald:

Obama appoints wife of Univision owner to UN diplomatic post

By El Nuevo Herald Staff Report | Wed September 26, 2012

President Barack Obama appointed Cheryl Saban, wife of the owner of Univision, as U.S. representative to the United Nations, according to reports from various news blogs.

According to the Politico blog, Haim Saban, owner of the television network, backed Hillary Clinton in 2008, but during the summer donated $1 million to groups supporting the campaigns of Democrats. And according to another blog in Spanish of Yahoo, the appointment of Cheryl Saban to the diplomatic post was made last Wednesday, the day before Obama appeared at a forum at the University of Miami hosted by Univision.

What an amazing coincidence! No wonder Obama was so blindsided by their tough questioning.

Haim Saban, a billionaire businessman, took control of Univision in 2006 topping a bid made by media conglomerate Televisa of Mexico.

"Mrs. Saban has never worked in diplomatic posts but has been active in philanthropic and non-profit organizations such as CARE USA, Children’s Network International, Mercy Corps, Plan USA," stated Yahoo, which said Haim Saban’s fortune is worth $3.6 billion and is listed by Forbes magazine as one of the 100 richest men in America.

Would it be too cynical to question the timing of this, in view of Univision’s recent investigation of ‘Fast & Furious’?

As if to confirm our worst suspicions, the DNC’s Politico does not even mention Ms. Saban’s connection to Univision in their lengthy article on this appointment:

Obama nominates mega-donor Haim Saban’s wife to U.N. post

By BYRON TAU | Thurs September 20, 2012

The Obama administration has nominated Cheryl Saban, wife of Israeli-American billionaire Haim Saban to be the U.S. representative to the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Saban — a mega-donor who was at one time the top giver to the Democratic Party — has been intensely courted by the Obama campaign to try to level the playing field between the Democrats and big-money outside groups.

He was a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton in 2008, and largely sat out the general election that year after President Obama clinched the nomination. But this cycle, he wrote a check to the Obama campaign for the first time. And over the summer, he finally donated $1 million to super PACs backing Democrats.

He recently penned an op-ed in the New York Times, defending Obama’s polices in Israel and announcing his full support for the president. He also visited the White House at least twice, meeting with President Obama and then-chief of staff Bill Daley. After a December 2011 meeting, he told the Hollywood Reporter that his conversation with Obama helped change his mind and that it was "time to get active again" in politics.

In Democratic circles, he’s largely been seen as a possible counterweight to big-money Republican donors like Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers.

Thanks goodness. Because the Democrats don’t have any fat cat donors of their own.

Administration officials point to Cheryl Saban’s qualifications for the position, including nonprofit work with 50 Ways to Save Our Children, CARE USA, Children’s Network International, Mercy Corps, and Plan USA — as well as a long record of philanthropy and public advocacy.

The White House announced Saban’s appointment to the largely ceremonial position in a Wednesday release.

The Politico does not mention Univision once in their entire article. Nor do they note that Wednesday was the day before Obama’s appearance on the network.

So it’s clear her connection to Univision didn’t matter at all.
