Obama Asks Australia To Take Detainees

Obama asks Australia to take Guantanamo detainees

SYDNEY (Reuters) – The United States has made a new request for Australia to accept a group of detainees from Guantanamo Bay for resettlement, a government spokeswoman said on Saturday.

The request is the first by President Barack Obama’s administration, which plans to close down the detention camp in Cuba within the next year.

Media reports have said the request involves a group of Uighurs from China’s largely Muslim western province of Xinjiang. Beijing has reportedly been pressing Washington to return them to China, but U.S. officials have expressed concerns about their likely treatment there.

Earlier requests for resettlement in Australia late last year by former president George W. Bush’s administration were turned down by Canberra in January on "national security and immigration" grounds…

Once again, despite railing against Mr. Bush, Mr. Obama continues to ape him in his foreign policy – and indeed, many other ways.

Still, is Australia still a penal colony to where undesirables are deported?

Who knew?

    I don’t understand all this back-and-forth regarding the detainees. John Murtha said his district would take them. So, what’s the hold up?

    There’s plenty of room in the White House, and the guest rooms of Democrat congressmen.

    If Gitmo must go, and no country will take the barbers and cab drivers, and no state will take people who just happened to be in a battle area, why not use the space available in Washington.

    Who gives a healthy s*it how they’re treated? At least they’d be getting their just desserts from their own countrymen.

      I’m sure that the Chinese will treat the terrorists that originated for the country real nice, maybe a nice cell for the few days before they get shot in the back of the head for being terrorists.

      Obama doesn’t want to send the Uighur terrorists back to China because China would show us what real torture is. Then what will the leftists in this country crow about?

    Hey! That gives me an idea. Since China wants them back so bad, why don’t we auction them off to the highest bidder (we’d have to set the reserve high enough), and if the winning bid is China, we could have them deduct the money from our national debt. It’s a win-win (and I hate that expression) situation!
