Obama: Wants Ways To Cut Gov’t Waste

From a wide-eyed Associated Press:

Obama: Wants suggestions to cut spending waste

By Will Lester, Associated Press Writer Sat Apr 18

WASHINGTON – Families are making tough decisions about their money and so too will their government, President Barack Obama said Saturday, promising that spending cuts are coming — and soon.

At a Cabinet meeting Monday, the president will ask department and agency heads for specific proposals for trimming their budgets…

To help achieve his goal of an efficient government, Obama announced the appointment of Jeffrey Zients, a founder and managing partner of the investment firm Portfolio Logic, as chief performance officer. Zients, who also will serve as deputy director for management of the Office of Management and Budget, will work to streamline processes and cut costs.

On that front, Obama gave notice he wants to act quickly.

"In the coming weeks, I will be announcing the elimination of dozens of government programs shown to be wasteful or ineffective," he said. "In this effort, there will be no sacred cows and no pet projects. All across America, families are making hard choices, and it’s time their government did the same."

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is ending consulting contracts to create new seals and logos that, Obama said, have cost the department $3 million since 2003. Obama also cited Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ plan to overhaul contracting procedures and eliminate billions in wasteful spending and cost overruns

Obama said he’s determined to try to cut costs.

"That is why I have assembled a team of management, technology and budget experts to guide us in this work," he said, "leaders who will help us revamp government operations from top to bottom and ensure that the federal government is truly working for the American people." ..

On Feb. 3, Nancy Killefer withdrew her candidacy to be the first chief performance officer for the federal government, saying she didn’t want her mishandling of payroll taxes on her household help to become a distraction for the administration

Mind you, Mr. Lester of the Associated Press, took this dictation with a straight face. And the AP, in turn, published it as if it were real news.

Note that the only meaningful cuts cited will come from the Defense Department.

The one department that the federal government should spend money on. And which is mandated by the Constitution.

But it was ever thus.

After all, there are no liberal sacred cows that could be cut.

(Thanks to Confucius for the heads up.)

    – Restrict the congress to meeting for 2 weeks a year, and eliminate their salaries and groupie staffs
    – Reduce the White House staff to 10. Make the POTUS cost-justify every WH expense in a 1-page document posted on the Internet
    – Disband every federal agency that doesn’t deal with National Security and fire Janet Napolitano
    – Disband the Fed
    – Follow the Constitution

    1) Take every dollar you’ve increased the budget this year and reverse it.
    2) Now make some real cuts…

Just like if the Government ever really wanted to go Green, they’d close the House and Senate chambers and have their members meet via secure videoconference with each member connecting from an office in their home district.

No travel, no second homes, just legislation.

The zoo keeper has formed another tier of bumbling boobs to try and ruin this country. I thought the gubbmint was suppose to STOP wasting money……here is the evidence that this is not going to happen. Barry can start cost cutting by firing the make up artist Michele hired full time. (She still looks like a Longshoreman)

    #1 on my list.

The TWO 747’s at Andrews AFB–PARK them and have the president actually stay in Washington and DO SOME WORK.

Same for the 757’s Gulfstream IV’s etc etc.

After all, if parking and/or selling their exec jet fleet works for carmakers in saving $$$, it must naturally follow that “What’s good for GM is good for the country”.

    I mean….right?

Honestly, this prick is still president?

  5. This is the kind of thing he must do to keep all of the jello spine moderates thinking he is doing a good job.. “See? He really wants waste cut!! He really wants to lower our deficit!!”

Kinda like “Nice Pretty tiger making those nice purring sounds… want to play with my baby?”

Cut funding to Planned Parenthood. That supposedly non-profit organization made a profit of over a billion dollars last year. I think they receive something like $300 million from us taxpayers every year to help our daughters have abortions that are coerced by older predatory “boyfriends” every year. (Thus helping the “boy” friend to get away with his crime)

If they were doing such a bang up job of making abortion “safe, legal, and rare”, why have we seen no significant drop in the rates of abortion in our country?

  8. Colonel1961 says:

On a completely different tack, I’d increase, by an order of magnitude, the number of representatives in the US Congress. Our current situation – and one that has existed for decades – is taxation (and its corresponding spending) without representation. The House has 435 members or 1 for every 700,000 Americans. Anyone had a chat with their Congressperson lately? Especially one of any substance? Didn’t think so…

While a ten-fold increase would be more expensive from a staff and salary perspective, it would be far more responsive to the people, and their will, and ultimately more economical overall, and pigs like Murtha would have a harder time getting to the trough…

I would agree with ALL of Pro’s ways to cut gov’t spending and everyone’s else’s for that matter. However, BHO won’t make any real changes except ones that are cosmetic. I for one, would like to see term limits on all elected officials. This would hep them concentrate on doing their jobs and not on ways on staying in power.

Keep in mind that BHO’s from Chicago where they haven’t met a tax they didn’t like. Here’s the kind of gov’t you have to look forward to – and it’s not pretty:

    Let me count the ways:

1 Eliminate the Dept of Education
    2.Eliminate the Dept of Energy
    3.Eliminate health and Human Services
    4.Eliminate Dept of Agriculture
    5.Eliminate Federal Housing Program
    6.Eliminate Medicaid
    7.Eliminate Social Security SSI

    Just for starters.

Do away with the IRS. Hell, it was supposed to be a temporary thing to begin with. Get rid of the EPA and it’s militant idiots. Stop sending 300 million a year to the Palestinian Authority-geez! I still can’t figure out why we’re sending any money at all to a group of people that absolutely hates and wishes to kill us. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Of course the POTUS will promise to look into these suggestions but he’ll never do anything about it.

    • canary says:

12 Gauge Rage, One way to tweak the IRS and put a stop to Obama’s ongoing vacationing, is if the citizens just followed American leaders, and went a few years without paying their taxes.

  13. BigOil says:

We know the claim of spending cuts is a smoke screen because a Democrat controlled government does not spend money – they invest it.

I think this fits in this thread—a fine example of “do what I say, not what I do.” So much for “cutting wasteful government spending. Yes, yet another “government” agency—from SFGate.

Legislation in works to name U.S. cyberczar
    Sunday, April 19, 2009

Cyberattacks concern the federal government so much that proposed legislation would designate a “cyberczar” to coordinate cybersecurity in case of a cyberattack.
    The background
According to the National Journal, Mike McConnell, the former director of National Intelligence, told President George W. Bush in May 2007 that if the Sept. 11 attackers had chosen computers instead of airplanes as their weapons and had waged a massive assault on a U.S. bank, the economic consequences would have been “an order of magnitude greater” than those caused by the physical attack on the World Trade Center. McConnell has subsequently referred to cybersecurity as the “soft underbelly of this country.”
    S773 would require:
    — The president to establish or designate a Cybersecurity Advisory Panel.
    — The Department of Commerce to serve as the clearinghouse of cybersecurity threat and vulnerability information to federal government and private sector-owned critical infrastructure information systems and networks.
    — The secretary of Commerce to develop or coordinate and integrate a national licensing, certification and periodic recertification program for cybersecurity professionals. Beginning three years after the date this law is enacted, it shall be unlawful for any individual who is not licensed and certified under the program to provide cybersecurity services to any federal agency.
Authorizes the president to establish an Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor.

Personally looks like another way for our already-too nosy government to to get more nosy.

If only it would stop the “penis pills” spam I might be for it!

I think Kundra, Obama’s Security Chief over Technology should be canned as it’s now appearing his sole job is limited to O’s Blackberry.

Obama’s cutting federal jobs is the exact opposite of the zillion times he talked about expanding and creating new federal jobs. He’s a pathological liar.
Get rid of the worthless EPA and all those green lunatics.

  15. MinnesotaRush says:

    “Words! Just words!” .. b. o-blah-blah

Is this the same dimwit who was going to go line by line thru the budget and cut and slash? Yeah. Righhhht!

How ’bout none of that taxpayer money going to non-profits – specifically – you got it – ACORN (et al)!

But of course, we knew these were “.. words .. just words” for his lame brained followers and bu_t buddy media pals.

  16. jobeth says:

Hey, Mr Prez! Mr Prez! Over here, I have a wonderful suggestion!

How about instead of buying all your office supplies at Staples, you buy in bulk! Great idea huh! That should save enough money to bail out the banks and GM again…wouldn’t you agree?

Oh, that was YOUR idea, you say?

How could I have been so dumb, I should have known you would have all the great solutions to our all our money problems.

My other idea was that you should just stop giving our tax money away…but I know that’s not a really great idea….like the ones you think up.

  17. VMAN says:

Just a load of crap!!! The press will run with this. We will be treated to endless praise and adulation of the O for really rolling up his sleeves and doing something. Makes me want to puke. All the useful idiots out there will gush and swoon.
