I believe most Americans would be disappointed in Britain's National Health Service. Under the NHS medical care is rationed and politicized. Many medical tests, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices are simply not covered by NHS because they have been deemed unnecessary by the governors––in other words, some treatments that are needed by patients are too costly, therefore health care is rationed. Stories are legion in Britain about NHS patients who die because they must wait too long for an MRI or for surgery. Many British endure painful conditions for years into old age, only then to be told that they are too weak or too old for elective surgery. Many of Britain's best doctors have opted out of the NHS, going into the private sector or emigrating to the USA. Even in Britain's private sector, however, you will run into nurses and medical staffers who have a class-warfare chip on their shoulders, and who are resentful of patients who can afford treatment outside the NHS, since they themselves cannot. Many of the physicians in NHS are recent immigrants from India or Africa. But for many medical needs you get no physician whatsoever. For example, under NHS babies are delivered by midwives, not obstetricians. But if you want an abortion, hey, no problem. Political considerations always triumph over patient care.

Polls regularly show high satisfaction with government run health care programs.

Small wonder since most people are healthy during most of their lives, and government health care appears to be "free".

They should poll the patients, not the public.

It's one of the greatest deceptions about public health care. Not unlikely the msm's polls showing high satisfaction with the Moron. Duh. They poll the Obamabots!

We have/had socailized helathcare in New Zealand. I used to think that it was great; you need a heart operation, you get it done for free. But, myself and my family were always healthy, apart from my frequent trips to the ER for motorcycle accidents, I had no real idea what problems socialised health care carried. But, many years later, when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and told to just go home and live out her time with her family, I got involved in the ugly side of it. The government hospitals weren't going to lift a finger to help her, and because of Kiwi's experiences with this, private hospitals came into existence, and she went there and got a few years of life out of the therapy they provided. Years later, New Zealanders get a cold shiver up their spine if the thought of having to go to a govt. hospital comes up, and forget about things like elective surgery for non life threatening problems. You go on multiple year waiting lists, only to check on that list awhile later to find out that you have been dropped from said list!

One other followup. The thing that gripes me the most about Universal Health Care is that everybody knows that huge medical costs are incurred because of lifestyle choices. That includes your weight, smoking, drinking, drug usage, exercise, risk taking, sex habits, driving habits, use of violence, anger management, family relationships, self-image, and many others.

I have a real hard time reconciling why I should pay for poor choices made by other people. I already do that with private health insurance, but at least I can opt out of it or change plans when the cost becomes more than I am willing to pay. With Universal Health, there will be no opting out. I'll be forced at the point of a gun to pay the costs of their drug-addled, careless, brain-dead, irresponsible, illegal and self-destructive life choices.

Particularly when it is an absolute certainty that the lifestyle choices of Obamy voters mean that the lifetime costs of their "medical care" are geometrically greater than the lifestyle choices of the rest of us.

You wanna talk about wealth redistribution......that one will top everything.

Getback. There's a lot of truth in what you say.

The individual is ultimately responsible for his/her own health, and just because there is an advertising campaign to get you to do something doesn't mean that it is the right thing for you.

It's a near certainty that many medical procedures / drugs are marginally useful or worse, and that alternative treatments are better and/or more cost effective..

And on top of that, many things thought to be useful at one point in time are thought to be harmful later, or vice versa.

I'm not urging people refuse medical help, but just to realize that there is a lot of hype in medicine, and certainly a lot more cya than in most aspects of life.

And there has been a long and concerted effort to persuade people to totally hand over the responsibility for their own health to "the professionals". The current push for Universal Health Care exploits that effort, just like the uberlibs exploit every everything that happens in life to gain power for themselves.

Where we disagree is that I think Universal Health is more about power than money. They want to make you dependent on government. Period. Because when you are, you will never rise up against them. Health Care is just another way to do that. And it's probably the most important one, because they can link just about everything to your health.

I got smart decades ago, after putting myself through college as a Surgical Tech (the guy who hands out instruments and assists).

It's funny what Important People will say around the little people, like in the doctor's lounge changing into scrubs. In Surgery I saw things a sober man ought not see, and in these private moments in the lounge I heard the unguarded thoughts of physicians. Like the patrician looking son of unmarried parents who had four total hysterectomies scheduled five days a week whether the women needed it or not because he had cash flow needs to meet.

That started me on the path of learning how to care for myself instead of delegating it to Others. Because, while there are surely many good people in the medical profession, my experience up close and personal is that the mercenary attitudes of the doctors far outweighed any good that could come from this field, that and blind obedience to the AMA, the pharmaceutical companies and the Government. Didn't leave any room for Care. Subsequent experience with paying close attention to hospitals, people I visit there, the way people are handled by physicians, and the manner by which people are not 'cured' but 'managed' appalls me even further.

I made the right decision to seek medical help elsewhere. And not fall into the clutches of a drug and scalpel culture ruled by bean counters and politicians. I set out to educate myself in several disciplines.

One short example ... and I know going in this will be cause for a flame war but it's still true ... a friend recently told me about his high cholesterol. I suggested that before he undertake the many drugs currently in vogue for reducing cholesterol, which are each and all damaging to the liver by reducing liver function in order to alter the manner in which the body naturally produces cholesterol ... he should try 45 days of oral EDTA - a chelation.

He did and in that short time, his numbers dropped to 150, and better yet, his ratio of 'good cholesterol' to 'bad cholesterol' evened out to 1/1. Meaning, textbook perfect.

Total cost?

2x $7.99 per bottle of 120 caps + shipping http://www.wonderlabs.com/itemleft.php?itemnum=9761&kbid=1156

Now, seriously ... why even discuss Obama's Healthcare Boondoggle? The Chavez Nazis are going to screw with health care no matter what ... because it's a field of money so vast no criminal enterprise can resist dipping their snouts into it like hogs at a trough. Massive money is as sure to be raped as proper morals are sure to be kicked to the curb.

Walk away from it. Learn to care for yourself.
