Obama Calls For More (US) Nuclear Disarmament

From a cheering Associated Press:

Obama to renew calls for nuclear reductions

By JULIE PACE | June 18, 2013

BERLIN (AP) — President Barack Obama on Wednesday will renew his call to reduce the world’s nuclear stockpiles, including a proposed one-third reduction in U.S. and Russian arsenals, a senior administration official said.

Obama will make his case during a speech at Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. His address comes nearly 50 years after John F. Kennedy’s famous Cold War speech in this once-divided city.

In which Kennedy defied Russian Soviet aggression. While Obama seeks to reward it.

The president has previously called for reductions to the stockpiles and is not expected to outline a timeline for this renewed push. But by addressing the issue in a major foreign policy speech, Obama is signaling a desire to rekindle an issue that was a centerpiece of his early first-term national security agenda…

Maybe Obama wants to revive this terrible idea to distract us from all of his other terrible ideas, such as amnesty.

It’s unclear whether Obama will seek further reductions through a new treaty or a non-binding agreement that would not require congressional ratification. Republicans on Capitol Hill are likely to resist any further cuts to the U.S. stockpiles.

Now that he has been re-elected, Obama has more ‘flexibility.’ So why not cut our nuclear arsenal to the bone via executive order? After all, who is going to stop him?

Obama’s calls for cooperation with Moscow come at a time of tension between the U.S. and Russia, which are supporting opposite sides in Syria’s civil war.

That’s putting it mildly. The AP fails to mention that Russia also supports Iran, and just about every other enemy of the United States.

Russia also remains wary of U.S. missile defense plans in Europe, despite U.S. assurances that the shield is not aimed at Moscow…

The AP fails to note that Obama has already given up on our missile defense plans in Europe. In exchange for which we have gotten exactly nothing.

Nuclear stockpile numbers are closely guarded secrets in most nations that possess them, but private nuclear policy experts say no countries other than the U.S. and Russia are thought to have more than 300. The Federation of American Scientists estimates that France has about 300, China about 240, Britain about 225, and Israel, India and Pakistan roughly 100 each.

The Federation of American Scientists have dedicated themselves to destroying our national defenses. So these numbers are probably low-balled.

But now they have an ally in Obama. Who has previously stated that he wants to lower our number of warheads to 300. Which is an 80% cut. And he wants to do so unilaterally.

As we noted back in 2012, via the Associated Press:

US weighing steep nuclear arms cuts

By ROBERT BURNS | February 14, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration is weighing options for sharp new cuts to the U.S. nuclear force, including a reduction of up to 80 percent in the number of deployed weapons, The Associated Press has learned.

Even the most modest option now under consideration would be an historic and politically bold disarmament step in a presidential election year, although the plan is in line with President Barack Obama’s 2009 pledge to pursue the elimination of nuclear weapons.

No final decision has been made, but the administration is considering at least three options for lower total numbers of deployed strategic nuclear weapons cutting to around 1,000 to 1,100, 700 to 800, or 300 to 400, according to a former government official and a congressional staffer

And bear in mind, that one of the few pieces of writing that we have from Obama is an article he wrote for Columbia University’s student newspaper back in 1983 calling for unilateral nuclear disarmament. And now he finally has the ‘flexibility’ to accomplish his dream with an executive order.

But, lest we forget, the US and other countries disarmed in the 1920s. Which caused the militarism of Germany (who was aided by Soviet Russia) and Japan in the 1930s.

History might not repeat itself. But stupidity sure does.
