Obama Canvassers Demand Their Money

From the Indianapolis NBC affiliate WTHR:

Obama campaign workers angry over unpaid wages

Nov 6, 2008

Jeremy Brilliant/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis – Lines were long and tempers flared Wednesday not to vote but to get paid for canvassing for Barack Obama. Several hundred people are still waiting to get their pay for last-minute campaigning. Police were called to the Obama campaign office on North Meridian Street downtown to control the crowd.

The line was long and the crowd was angry at times.

“I want my money today! It’s my money. I want it right now!” yelled one former campaign worker.

A former spokesman for the Obama campaign said 375 people were hired as part of the Vote Corps program and said people signed up to work three-hour shifts at a time. Three hours of canvassing got workers a $30 pre-paid Visa card.

The workers showed up to get their cards Wednesday morning at 10:00 am.

“There was a note on the door saying 1:00 pm and then at 1:20 pm everybody was like why is nobody here. They just got here and they’re trying to get it organized,” said Heather Richards, a former campaign worker.

The large gathering of around 375 people prompted police to call in extra officers and set up temporary barricades. The barricades helped keep the crowd from spilling out onto Meridian Street. Police say the several hundred people in line were for the most part orderly.

“No arrests. Some of the people were upset at first because the line wasn’t moving as fast as they thought it should. But we really haven’t had any problems,” said Major Darryl Pierce, Metro Police.

Eventually people did start getting paid, but some said they were missing hours and told to fill in paperwork making their claim and that eventually they would get a check in the mail.

“Still that’s not right. I’m disappointed. I’m glad for the president, but I’m disappointed in this system,” said Diane Jefferson, temporary campaign worker.

“It should have been $480. It’s $230,” said Imani Sankofa.

“They gave us $10 an hour. So we added it. I added up all the hours so it was supposed to be at least $120. All I get is $90,” said Charles Martin.

“I worked nine hours a day for 4 days and got paid half of what I should have earned,” said Randall Waldon.

Some people weren’t satisfied with filling out a claim form for money they felt was still due to them.

“They say that they gonna call you or they going to mail it to you, but I don’t know. We’ll see what happens,” said Antron Grose.

“Talking about they’ll mail it to us. I ain’t worried about that, man. They’re not going to mail nothin’,” said Martin.

Wait until they start asking about their pie.

You meant to tell me that these people were only working for money? Not because they believed so deeply in the cause? Wow! I’m so shocked. Then again maybe they don’t deserve all they claim:

“They say that they gonna call you or they going to mail it to you, but I don’t know. We’ll see what happens,” said Antron Grose.

“Talking about they’ll mail it to us. I ain’t worried about that, man. They’re not going to mail nothin’,” said Martin.

So articulate, they are surely entitled to more compensation then $10 an hour. Just think of all the training they would have needed to form such eloquent thoughts. And I love the diversity. How Obama is really bringing the country together.

One word to der leader’s PAID WORKER’S: BAMBOOZLED!

Wait until they find out they really aren’t getting a bigger piece of the government cheese, it will be priceless.

  3. Helena says:

Ummm…. Just exactly how does that work? Part-time, seasonal employees being paid with a pre-paid VISA card? Did they fill out 1099s? Sounds like they should organize and demand their rightful wages. Somebody call a community organizer, quick.

“I worked nine hours a day for 4 days and got paid half of what I should have earned”.
It’s called social justice snapperhead. Didn’t you come to the meetings?

  5. curvyred says:

I think this is a perfect opportunity to educate the workers on why conservatives dislike “spread the wealth” so much.

I think half the wages should go to someone else more deserving, like the people who sat at home and munched on popcorn.

    What do you think?

  6. dodgeboy27 says:

I agree. This is a prime example of redistributive change. I actually worked actively against Obama’s campaign, so don’t I deserve a little sumpin-sumpin?

  7. proreason says:

Somebody who earned their money the old fashioned, obsolete way will have to come up with the money to pay these upstanding citizens.

  8. Liberals Demise says:

AAAHHHHH….One of the 3 biggest lies in the world: 1) I will pay you tomorrow
    2) Your check is in the mail.
    3) Trust me, I’ll _ _ _ _ out!
I hope these Obama workers payed their taxes. After all……we alls has ta do’s ar part fo de economy!

  9. Anonymoose says:

And so the disillusionment begins…….a bit quicker than I thought, I might add.

  10. VMAN says:

I’m not gonna ax you again gi me my money!!!!

  11. Colonel1961 says:

Pre-paid Visa cards? How quaint. I guess they were out of FEMA MasterCards. Anyone getting a W-2 or a 1099? Didn’t think so.

  12. proreason says:

““I worked nine hours a day for 4 days and got paid half of what I should have earned,” said Randall Waldon.”

One of the ladies at work was watching a youtube video of a reporter asking an Obama supporter what she thought of his win. She said “This is just so great, now I won’t have to worry about filling up my car with gas and paying my mortgage anymore!” The lady watching the video couldn’t believe what she was hearing. I told her that Obama was so vague about what he was going to do during his campaign speaking that people without critical thinking skills could project their own desires onto what he was actually saying. He is not going to be able to deliver everything to everybody so there are going to be one hell of a lot of disappointed Obamatrons in the coming months and years. When one raises expectations to levels one can’t possibly meet, one has set oneself up for failure. The one has set himself up for years of frustrating failure. Of course, he will say it is Bush’s fault that he is failing to live up to the unrealistic expectations Obama encouraged in order to grab the ultimate political prize for himself.

  14. 1sttofight says:

Do they not realize that the election is over? The One could care less about them now, just as dems have for years once they are elected.
Go back to your gov housing until the next election and stop whinning, this is nothing new.

BTW Homey, Spreading the wealth is not that much fun when it is your wealth being spread around, is it?

  15. take_no_prisoners says:

There was an old politician who spent most of his life in Washington. When he died he met St. Peter. St. Peter asked the politician whether he had thought about where he wanted to spend eternity–in heaven or hell. The politician said that he had never really thought about it. St. Peter told him that was O.K. that they had a comparison special for people like him–he would be allowed to spend a day in heaven and a day in hell and then he could decide. What would you like to try first? asked St. Peter. The politician said he wanted to get hell out of the way first and stepped on the elevator straight to hell. When the doors opened he walked onto a beautiful meticulously manicured lawn with sweet smelling trees and flowers along the edges of the fairway. There was a buffet with lobster, caviar, filet mignon and every imaginable delicacy. Top shelf liquor, wine champagne and beer was available in whatever amount he desired. He got a round of golf in with a few of his old friends and saw a lot of people he associated with when he was alive. He even managed to shoot a hole in one. Back at the clubhouse he was able to hook up with a beautiful young girl. All too soon, the day was over and the elevator took him to heaven. He was impressed by the gentle warmth and clear light of heaven. Everyone was happy and content but it seemed sort of boring to him. When St. Peter asked him for his choice the politician said that heaven was nice but he liked his visit to hell a lot better. St. Peter said “Are you sure you really want to spend eternity in hell?” And the politician said “Yes.” He got back on the elevator and went straight back down to hell. When the doors opened he was extremely uncomfortable with the awful heat, the horrible smell and all the wretched people he saw–some of them he had seen on his visit didn’t look at all happy as they had. He asked Lucifer what was going on, the place was so nice when he was here a few days ago but it’s unbearably awful now. Lucifer smiled and laughed, and told him yesterday we were campaigning, today the campaign is over.

Our first snapshot of an Obama administration in action. This chaos is not surprising when the man in charge has never run anything. I believe BO’s administration will be a trainwreck, unfortunately, we are all passengers.

  17. gipper says:

    A good one, take_no_prisoners.

  18. DEZ says:

“BO’s administration will be a trainwreck,”

    Your optimism far outweighs mine.

  20. JohnMG says:

    Only slightly off topic, but here’s a riddle;

Obama,, Biden, and Pelosi are riding a donkey along a mountain trail when the donkey mis-steps and plunges down a 1000-foot precipice. Who is saved?

    Ans. America!

  21. Exeter says:

Thank you, JohnMG. I hadn’t laughed for two days – then I read your post.

  22. Professor_Repulso says:

They were doing it for the money? Shocking! “Doesn’t that seem, er, to be slightly opposed to their anti-materialistic view of life?”

  23. DEZ says:

    OK my turn.
Obama and Biden ride a horse into a sleepy town, when they dismount at the tavern, Biden runs to the back of the horse and lifts the animals tail.
Puzzled Obama asks, what are you doing Joe?
Well when we rode past the stable, some guy yelled look at the two assh**es on that horse.

  24. DEZ says:

Its ironic to say the least prof.

  25. Lurkin_no_mo says:

The Obama Presidency: Jimmy Carter without the steroids, in other words, more inefficient.
However, during a time of war, probably more dangerous to our Country.

    Ans: Baraks necktie
