Obama-Care Delay Could Kill 45,000 Americans

First we have this from the New York Times:

Crucial Rule Is Delayed a Year for Obama’s Health Law

By JACKIE CALMES and ROBERT PEAR | July 2, 2013

WASHINGTON — In a significant setback for President Obama’s signature domestic initiative, the administration on Tuesday abruptly announced a one-year delay, until 2015, in his health care law’s mandate that larger employers provide coverage for their workers or pay penalties. The decision postpones the effective date beyond next year’s midterm elections…

And least The Times had the honesty to mention the reason for the delay in their first paragraph.

“I am utterly astounded,” said Sara Rosenbaum, a professor of health law and policy at George Washington University and an advocate of the law. “It boggles the mind. This step could significantly reduce the number of uninsured people who will gain coverage in 2014.” …

At the White House, Tara McGuinness, a senior adviser on the law, disputed that. “Nothing in the new guidance regarding employer reporting and responsibility will limit individuals’ eligibility for premium tax credits to buy insurance through the marketplaces that open on Oct. 1,” she said…

This last is a blatant lie from the White House. Under the now delayed provision, Obama-Care fines businesses with 50 or more fulltime employees who do not provide health insurance $3,000 per employee.

Without that fine, those evil employers will continue their evil ways of not providing insurance. And that accounts for the vast majority of those who do not now have health insurance.

Under the law, most Americans will be required to have insurance in January 2014, or they will be subject to tax penalties. The announcement on Tuesday did not say anything about delaying that requirement or those penalties…

In other words, all of those people who are not getting insurance from their big business employers will still have to pay the fine. Or try to buy an individual health insurance account, which even if available in their state, will have doubled or even tripled in costs, thanks to Obama-Care.

And thanks to this delay it will be near impossible for them to get taxpayer subsidies for their skyrocketing premiums, as even The Times grudgingly admits:

Under the provision to set up state-based marketplaces, subsidies are supposed to be available to many lower- and middle-income people who do not have access to coverage from employers or other sources. It may be difficult, however, for officials running the exchanges to know who is entitled to subsidies if employers do not report information on the coverage they provide to workers…

So, yes, this delay "could significantly reduce the number of uninsured people who will gain coverage in 2014.”

Meanwhile, lest we forget, Obama-Care was rammed through because a Harvard study found that 45,000 Americans died each year due to a lack of health insurance.

Which we noted back in September 2009, via Reuters:

Study links 45,000 U.S. deaths to lack of insurance

By Susan Heavey | September 18th, 2009

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Nearly 45,000 people die in the United States each year — one every 12 minutes — in large part because they lack health insurance and can not get good care, Harvard Medical School researchers found in an analysis released on Thursday.

"We’re losing more Americans every day because of inaction … than drunk driving and homicide combined," Dr. David Himmelstein, a co-author of the study and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard, said in an interview with Reuters

The Harvard study, funded by a federal research grant, was published in the online edition of the American Journal of Public Health. It was released by Physicians for a National Health Program, which favors government-backed or "single-payer" health insurance…

Roughly 46.3 million people in the United States lacked coverage in 2008, the U.S. Census Bureau reported last week, up from 45.7 million in 2007…

Study co-author Dr. Steffie Woolhandler said the findings show that without proper care, uninsured people are more likely to die from complications associated with preventable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease…

So how many Americans are going to die in the next year because Obama is delaying Obama-Care to help the Democrats hold on to Congress?
