Obama Delays Gitmo Report Til Closing

It looks like Mr. Obama’s mid-summer budget report is not the only thing he has decided to delay.

From his unquestioning admirers at Reuters:

Guantanamo report on detainee policy delayed

By Matt Spetalnick Mon Jul 20

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A key report ordered by U.S. President Barack Obama as part of his effort to close the internationally condemned Guantanamo prison will be delayed six months, but officials insisted on Monday they were still on track to shut it down by January.

Amid divisions between the administration and lawmakers over the fate of Guantanamo inmates, Obama aides said a task force crafting a new policy on terrorism detainees would miss its Tuesday deadline for offering its full recommendations.

Instead, the government panel issued an interim report late on Monday that provided an overview of the options, including prosecution in U.S. civilian courts and by military commission or the transfer of suspects to other countries.

A separate government task force reviewing detainee interrogation rules also fell short of its Tuesday deadline and was granted an extra two months to submit a final report

Though postponement of the two reports could raise questions about Obama’s timetable, officials said the administration remained committed to his target date for shuttering Guantanamo — within a year of his inauguration this year.

"Are we on target to meet the deadline?" one official said at a briefing for reporters. "The answer is yes."

Officials said extensions were sought — and granted — in order to conduct the most comprehensive reviews possible as well as to consult thoroughly with Congress. "These are hard, complicated, consequential decisions," an aide said.

Obama has faced strong opposition from lawmakers, including those in his own Democratic party, to transferring Guantanamo prisoners to U.S. soil for detention and trial. In May, Congress demanded a detailed plan on closing Guantanamo before they would grant him the necessary funds to do it

Mitch McConnell, leader of the Republican minority in the U.S. Senate, said it had become "increasingly clear over time that the administration announced its intent to close (Guantanamo) without a plan." …

The five-page interim report issued on Monday said prosecution "must occur as soon as possible" but asserted that "justice cannot be done" unless the accused are given a "full and fair opportunity to contest the charges against them."

Isn’t it funny how Reuters puts it:

Obama aides said a task force crafting a new policy on terrorism detainees would miss its Tuesday deadline for offering its full recommendations.

Yes, Mr. Obama is going to miss his Tuesday deadline – but only by six months.

Mind you, this is a report that was demanded by Congress.

And speaking of funny, isn’t it odd how all during the campaign Mr. Obama said he knew exactly what needed to be done with Guantanamo, and that he would do it as soon as he assumed office. And now he doesn’t seem to know what to do.

It’s almost as if he was misleading us.

Lest we forget, the real impetus behind Congress demanding this report was to prevent Mr. Obama from releasing these terrorists detainees in the US. Which, apparently, had been part of his original plan.

But if this report to Congress is to be delayed six months, this report will pm;u come out after Guantanamo has already been closed down – or at least the very day it is closed down.

(Since Mr. Obama promised Gitmo would be closed down “within a year of his inauguration,” which is exactly six months from today.)

So how is this report going to help Congress decide on whether to fund the closing of Gitmo, if it has already been closed by the time they will get it?

More specifically, how will Congress be able to stop the terrorists detainees from being brought to the US, when they could already be here by the time they get this report?

And isn’t Mr. Obama guilty of contempt of Congress by ignoring their demands?

Just imagine the howls of outrage if Mr. Bush had tried to do something like this.

LD, I have been seriously wondering why we aren’t looking into this option. I know its something we S&Lers want.

Is there anything that can be charged yet for his impeachment (and hopefully his removal from office)?

Does anyone else know what can be done along those lines?

Not when you have a media that slobbers over E-V-E-R-Y little thing he spews forth and coddles (hides) his socialist idealism / dreams of his pappy!

      I wish!!

… and not when you have a Congress entirely dominated by his followers.

IF, by some astronomical twist of fate, the House did bring impeachment proceedings and indeed, impeached him .. the Senate MIGHT slap his fingers and then blame Bush.

I have a feeling that the tide is turning though with Barry.

Again, FOX refuses to air TOTUS on Weds night (thank God – I’m a huge SYTYCD fan) and the White House is deferring to Susan Boyle and rescheduled TOTUS an hour earlier after NBC (GE) balked.

Looks like Barry is finally getting a bi-partisanship response. Both parties don’t support him.

It’s almost as if he’s decided to go it alone on this decision to close Gitmo, and not fully co-operate with Congress and keep them fully informed. This brand of cowboy politics, shooting from the hip, has got to stop. I’m sick and tired of Obama shredding the constitution and running the congress like a plantation!

If it keeps up, pretty soon the white house will be overrun with lobbyists, he’ll be doing special favors for his pet supporters, he’ll be conducting a war out of his hip pocket, and budget deficits will be getting out-of-hand.

But Mr. Obama, being a Harvard-trained lawyer, and having been community organizaer, will right the ship before it gets out-of-hand. He’s a middle-of-the-road conservative with a deep love of his country, and the most experienced and smartest man to ever win the white house, after all.

I know because he told us, and the hard-bitten, squinty-eyed press will hold him to his promises.

It appears Obama has decided to vote present on Gitmo.
