Obama Demands Secrecy On Defense Cuts

From the Army Times’ Defense News:

DoD officials vow secrecy on budget

By JOHN T. BENNETT, Defense News

February 19, 2009

The Obama administration has directed defense officials to sign a pledge stating they will not share 2010 budget data with individuals outside the federal government.

In an undated non-disclosure agreement obtained by Defense News, the administration tells defense officials that “strict confidentiality” must be practiced to ensure a “successful” and “proper” 2010 defense budget process.

The secrecy pact comes as dozens of Bush-era Pentagon appointees remain on the job, asked to stay on by the Obama administration until replacements are confirmed to ensure continuity during wartime.

The Pentagon and Office of Management and Budget have agreed on a fiscal 2010 defense budget top line figure of $537 billion. That level is nearly $50 billion lower than the $585 billion defense plan created during the final months of the Bush administration, and $24 billion higher than the already enacted $513 billion 2009 defense budget.

The pledge covers any data about the 2010 budget, including: “planning, programming and budgeting system documents and databases, and any other information” that concerns the administration’s internal discussions about “the nature and amounts of the president’s budget for fiscal year 2010, and any supplemental budget request during the current fiscal year.”

The administration is requiring defense officials to promise they will not divulge the kinds of information covered in the document “to any individual not authorized to receive it.”

“Under no circumstances will I disclose such information outside the Department of Defense and other government agencies directly involved in the defense planning and resource-allocation process, such as the Office of Management and Budget,” the agreement said.

What is this?

We thought Mr. Obama had pledged to have an open and honest government that would be completely transparent?

Except, of course, when it comes to his slashing of the nation’s defense budget.

(Thanks to Sheehanjihad for the heads up.)

    Interesting article, I especially like this part;

The secrecy pact comes as dozens of Bush-era Pentagon appointees remain on the job, asked to stay on by the Obama administration until replacements are confirmed to ensure continuity during wartime.

And naturally, it’s all still Bush’s fault of course, certainly not “The Messiahs”.

    • TwilightZoned

“…Bush-era Pentagon appointees remain on the job,…until replacements are confirmed to ensure continuity during wartime.”

Call me a skeptic, but this sounds like some big time shenanigans are going to be happening within the military. Secrecy for us but transparency for the enemy seeing how weak we’ll soon be. Oh, I get it. THAT’s what he meant by transparency…

  2. proreason

    What is the last straw?

Must our security as well as economy be destoyed before the country wakes up?

  3. BillK

Come on, the world loves Obama!

Who would want to hurt us now?

Or so the thinking goes in DC.

Recall Chamberlain was pretty sure of himself and his agreements with Hitler, too.

  4. wardmama4

The One ™ it is announced will pull out all Troops from Iraq by Aug – ahead of schedule.

At least now, The One ™ has told us what programs are failures and not working.

    God help America.

  5. U NO HOO

Transparency, transparency, we don’t need no stinkin’ transparency!

I thought war was a stimulus to the economy.

“pull out all Troops from Iraq by Aug…”…so they can get laid off at their civilian jobs?

  6. pdsand

Given the audacity of governing Obama has shown to this point in the light of day, the fact that Obama wants secrecy on this issue must imply it’s going to be a real humdinger.

  7. Reality Bytes

SG: I have a question; I wish someone would ask President Obama.

“Mr. President, like you, your predecessor, Former President Bush, campaigned on big government solutions in education, child welfare, health care, social security reform & energy. As we all know, all of that changed on 9/11. Mr. President, in the event a nuclear device is detonated in a major US city or some other major attack on The United States occurs on your watch, what can we expect from your administration? And, how, Mr. President will you prioritize your agenda as it relates to this country’s citizens security?

  8. sheehanjihad

Obama is counting on the muslims to strike…giving us all a “common enemy” and putting his socialist agenda completely out of the news, like it was ever there to start with. Then, with this “new crisis”, he can complete his task of totalitarian takeover for his masters. There exist over half the country who are still frothing at the mouth about what Bush did, yet they ignore the identical, and even more egregious “wrongs” being done now, instead trying to blame it on Bush…which is what they are trained to do. Freakin sheep…..Bush Bush Bush…blah blah blah….droning on like automatons…. and now they somehow ignore what is going on that is far worse than anything Bush did, or could have done. Ignorance is necessary for Obama’s administration to succeed, and we are assailed every day by appallingly ignorant people who keep pointing out what Bush did, yet cant bring themselves to admit that Obama is doing the same thing, only more. Jesus….no wonder he got elected.

    • proreason

He might also be intentionally weakening the military to pave the way for subservience to the U.N.

I know it sounds so nutty that even The Moron wouldn’t consider it, but there are many on the left kooks who actually want that……and The Moron is living up the worst fears of those of us who pegged him as an extreme radical from the beginning.

  9. pdsand

Nothing nutty about it, the left’s greatest criticism of Bush is that he invaded Iraq against the objections of the UN Security Council, that he conducted a so-called “illegal” war, and that he supposedly violated the geneva conventions. I think it is obvious these liberals would have been very pleased in some other country was in the position and had the inclination to invade and capture Bush and drag him before some World Court in the Hague, or some other such body a la Milosevich. They would definitely be pleased if the UN had workable jurisdiction over us.

  10. angryredhen

Hey! Maybe the TIMES will leak it anyway…oh, wait, we’re screwed! We’re SCREWED!

  11. catie

Did anyone notice the snub he gave to the Joint Chiefs last night? Additionally President Bush always had the gallery full of service people or their families and would mention them by name. The Messiah made a condescending gesture to the Army and Marine that were up there but then spent a lot of time talking about others who were ensconced next to the Belle.
These liberals despise the military and so does he. They’re a fancy pants private airline to him, the Belle, the two punishments and the m-i-l. Of course he wants secrecy he doesn’t want them disliking him even more than most already do.

    • proreason

How could you force yourself to watch? I’m afraid I’ll have a stroke….can’t watch him….not even for a few seconds. I’ve had to give up watching Fox as much as I used to because you can’t avoid him.

But thanks for sharing the insight.

    • TwilightZoned

Catie, I noticed. Deep down I believe O loathes our military. The same could be said for Gore. My husband’s son flew AF II with Gore several times. My husband asked him how he could salute him. His son’s reply, “I salute the office, not the man.” I suspect the vast majority of our great women and men serving feel the exact same way.

Pro, O said America doesn’t torture. Another lie. I sure as hell was watching him last night.

  12. Right of the People

Oops, there goes the DoD! I’m sure he’ll tell us that we won’t need the military because he’ll have his Brown Shirts protect him oops again I meant us. Or is it protect him from us? I think I’m going to move to Canada, I can’t stand this anymore. Has it only been 5 weeks?

    10-7

  13. Liberals Demise

In keepin’ with the festivaties in CoCo-Town this week, I’d like to sing a song…….

    “Oh when the Moolahs
    Come slinkin’ in
Oh when the Moolahs come slinkin’ in ………

  14. 12 Gauge Rage

LD, you and I both know that there are no secrets in the military and that even the wildest rumor has some shred of truth in it. And if you’ve been in the military long enough you begin to develop a B.S. meter that sounds off when someone is lying to you. So how much will be cut out of the budget and how much will be spent on propaganda and spin to convince the public that the military has all it needs to defend the country?

    • proreason

We already know the plan…….position the military as post cold-war, so cut out missle defense and heavy equipment. They won’t build new ships or new planes or new artillery systems. To pacify the public brag about increases in veterens benefits (which will cost 5% of the what is cut out).

And we all know how effective it is to fight the last war.

But even that assumes they are approaching the issue with integrity and have the best interests of the country in mind.

I think it’s at least as likely that they would want the U.S. to be severely weakened and eventually come under the dominion of U.N. or some other looney coalition. Many on the left hold that view. Many.

Does anyone still doubt that The Moron is an extreme leftist?

  15. canary

so what’s the punishment if they violate the pledge.

    • sheehanjihad

then the public will know how much destruction the obama administration has wrought on our Military’s ability to keep cutting edge technology. It’s the public that isnt supposed to know….and our dear leader is putting every obstacle in the way of transparency…..like with the spending frolic he duped the public on….

  16. jobeth

I am getting more and more convinced “o” is trying to dismantle anything and everything about this country…before the country catches on.

I truly believe he is just a silver tongue “front” for a machine that will destroy this country if we are not careful.

This all scares the h— out of me!

    • dulcimergrl

I agree with you completely, jobeth. In fact, I’ve gotten so depressed the last few months over the direction we’re headed that I was seriously considering whether suicide would be a viable option…no joke…

    • jobeth

I know what you mean. I’ve been pretty depressed myself lately.

I’ve never seen the level of stupidity we are seeing now out of the American people.

It all goes back to the dumbing down of our kids in school. Now they are reaching adulthood, they can be so easily duped it’s not funny.

Hopefully there are enough of us around to vote this crowd out in two years….IF it’s not already too late!

    • proreason

Get madder ladies. It’s better than being depressed.

(and btw, I hope dulcimergrl is being allegorical about suicide. The Moron is overreaching, and even numbskulls are seeing it……people are not going to be happy as they learn more and more of his evil intentions. America still has the smartest citizens)

    • dulcimergrl

I continue to be flabbergasted at how easily duped so many are. Otherwise intelligent people (a coworker I was just chatting with, for example) are convinced that Bush is the reason we’re in such a fix. He completely trashed everything in the last 8 years, doncha know…oh, and he let the good folks in the regulatory agencies completely slack off, so everything’s in a pickle because they weren’t doing their jobs. (I’m not sure where she was going with that, but really didn’t want to get into it with her).

And pro, I assure you I wasn’t being allegorical. I have a history of depression and have been off my meds for about a year now (yeah, I know, what a great time to stop taking an antidepressant). I’ve been struggling to maintain because I got tired of the side effects, but maybe it’s time to try something again. I have a family to care for.

    • proreason

Please get back on your meds, dulcimergirl.

My BIL is afflicted with depression, and I know how bad it can be.

You know the meds take a while to kick in. Don’t delay.

      It’s serious stuff.

(and avoid my posts ;-) )

    • Sharps Rifle

He wouldn’t be moving so rapidly if he weren’t cognizant that he is only a minority president (36 percent, plus voter fraud and illegals) and that real Americans would rebel against him.

Of course, an alternate explanation is that he’s fearful that one of the lawsuits against him will stick, he’ll be compelled to release his records (although with appeals, stays and continuances, such compliance wouldn’t happen until 2099), and he’d be found to be completely ineligible to be president, so he figures he’d better move fast in order to get his communist plans implemented.

      Yeah.

Like the ‘rats would ever turn on one of their own hardcore Marxists. And don’t bet that we’ll have free elections in 2010. They’ll pull something, and elections will be a thing of the past, as will our military.

    • jobeth

      dulcimergrl,

I am with pro on this one. As depressed as I get over all this stuff, I know that there are enough of us sane Americans left we can fight all this. This country has been thru a whole lot and this is just one more thing to conquer. We’ll do it.

I think S & L is what keeps me sane sometimes.

Sometimes I take a day or so break from the news, regroup and come back. Right after the election I had to completely pull back. I knew what was coming. But when he took office I was back and ready to get back in the fray.

Besides…its either let off steam here or burst! LOL.

If you ever want someone to talk to, Steve has my permission to give you my email address. Sometimes it’s good to be able to dump on a “like minded” person! Besides, we are like a family here.

You hang in there girl!!! ;-D

    • jobeth

      Sharps,

It’s astonishing, the speed he is working. He’s slashing and burning way to fast to know what he is destroying.

Well, yes he knows, but any legitimate prez would at least want to sort out the bad from the good. And that takes time.

Not to mention the size of his bills and pushing so fast that no one could begin to read them.

Sort of tipping his hand to exactly what you said about why he needs to proceed so quickly. He knows well he will be found out and wants to get as much done as possible before he has to fight impeachment.

(BTW, Is it too early to say “IMPEACH THE BUM! ?)

You know, I’ve been thinking about the elder bush and his “read my lips, no new taxes”, and then he was led by the libs to place new taxes on us. They quickly turned on him and said “see how he lied”.

I get the feeling that W was done the same way with the stimulus bill he passed. I’m wondering how much of that was the libs suckering him into doing it as well.

This must be Obalmy’s version of “shock and awe”.

      Ahhh, politics….!
      Don’t you just love em’

  17. mybrotherkeeper

Dear Dulcimer Girl: Maybe you need to keep it light for a few days; that is, focus on positive news, stories, testimonies, family things, home things, etc. That way, you can view all the news from a positive base. If you feel that base is being threatened, fortify it and build it up again, before going back. Know that you are loved by all the people on this site, at least. I thought I should mention that, because you are not alone…there are a lot of people who feel similarly to you. And you are needed by people, too, don’t forget!

  18. mybrotherkeeper

Dear Dulcimer Girl: I just saw your second comment so thought I’d encourage you again…I have been taking antidepression pills for about a year now. Didn’t seem to make much a difference, so stopped taking them recently. Then I started feeling the stress where it was causing some tightness in the chest, so started taking them again. If it was just helping keep the stress down enough to stop that tightness, it is well worth it! I don’t like taking the stuff because of the negative thing associated with it, but if I need it, I need it. I actually feel better again, so I feel it’s worth taking. Anything is worth feeling better! I will pray for you, right now!

    • dulcimergrl

Thank you, my and pro, for your thoughts. I understand how SSRIs work, having been on them for probably 7 or 8 years. It is evident that I can’t do without them, and like you, my, it’s a subtle thing. They never worked like “happy pills”, just took the edge off without my really noticing. But if I’m slipping into suicidal thoughts, it’s past time to get back on them.

    • sheehanjihad

Hey Dulcimer Girl….if you need a lift, I will go out and beat the crap out of a driveling liberal with my tater stick to make you laugh. It always works for me. Steve also has my permission to share email address to you if you need to find out you are certainly not alone. However, my brand of observational humor may just be helpful until you get what you need. I think I will start by pimp slapping Helen Thomas…..then make donkey ears behind Gibbs as he drones the party line like the punk bitch he is…..hey, you have your “people” here. Take advantage of it. You may be surprised how many people care. I found out.

    • dulcimergrl

SJ, can I send you a list of which libs I think you most need to take a tater stick to? That would certainly “pep me up some” (a reference to one of my favorite politically-incorrect movies, “Blazing Saddles”).

  19. mybrotherkeeper

When I was about 8 years old, one night my Ma and Dad had a late-night show on. There was a guest who, for some reason, sang “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.” I did not know anything of Jesus or God back then, but the song must have spoken to me, ‘cuz I danced through the house, singing it. Years went by, and I always had a fear of a communistic-type government. Then Clinton was campaigning and my fears seemed to be coming true. One AM I called a radio station and said, ‘It doesn’t seem to matter what the guy has done, people don’t care.’ It was early AM. Sometimes, before stations power down from nighttime power, you can hear stations from hundreds of miles away. A guy called up and said that while I was talking, he could hear ‘bleed-through’ from another radio station coming through. The song he heard them play: “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands!” This was special!

  20. dulcimergrl

    As Hamlet said:

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

(in response to mybrotherkeeper message about ‘bleed-through’)

  21. Barbie

dear dulcimergrl, I hope you don’t mind my jumping in on this post, but of course, I can relate to your suicidal comment. My sisters and I discuss the ‘political scene’ quite often. I tell them I had to cut back on alot of it because it was driving me crazy and making me way too depressed. And I do mean WAY too depressed. Remember, life can be good regardless of what Odumbo does, we can still be happy with our lives and our family and, if you’re a person of faith, you can be happy with God in your life; Odumbo can try, but he can’t take Him away. Besides, I’m gonna stick around to make some liberal miserable (HAH), if in no other way than to post here. I hope you do not mind but I, like the others, hope you take your medicine again. However, I have to admit I like Sheehanjihad’s comment about beating a liberal with a tater stick. HAH we can all use a laugh. And, SJ, Gibbs is indeed a punk bitch.

  22. dulcimergrl

Thanks Barbie. What you said makes a lot of sense. I was listening to Dennis Miller on the car radio the other night, and someone was complaining about the jerks in Washington, and how he felt so powerless about the situation. Dennis said something like “don’t let Nancy Pelosi take your power. You still have your life and your family and whatever talents and skills you have. Neither she nor anyone else can ever take that away unless you let them.” It wasn’t exactly those words, but it really made me think. I don’t want to go on and on about it, but I think for me at least, these past few months have been transforming. It was kind of like after I had my first kid; everything looks different to me now. We are seeing a seachange in the world, and we all need to hang on for dear life. You all are helping me more than I can say. I hope I can do the same for you.

And yes, I am a person of faith (Catholic). That helps too.

    • sheehanjihad

dulcimergrl….at the risk of sounding well, obvious…you have to take heart that this will not prevail as long as you think it might. I wish I could tell you more, hell, I wish I knew more, but you have to take it on your faith that good will triumph over the dark evil that has befallen our Nation.

    • dulcimergrl

I had an enjoyable evening with my son and his school band. Hanging around with a bunch of teen age band geeks cheers me up in ways that can’t be described. There is hope for the world after all.

And I found something on Youtube that helps put things into perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related

    • canary

dulcigirl/well at least one thing good about the Catholic faith, is that suicide is a big no no, and try to think of this. You don’t know what might come around the corner. But, you have a child. And if you kill yourself, this can scar you child, and he can develope depression. It’s a fact, that many who commit suicide leads to their children commiting sucide. And your child will probably be really angry at you. Depression can be so overbearing at the time, that the present moment in this deep state of mind, you can not see your life, or the pain, getting better. So, you must make lemonaid from these feelings. Be aware and encourage others. And since the world sucks so bad, and danger is bad, why not let things take their course. Why not try to the end. Focus on something that you want to live for. Your child. Think of future grandchildren that will really need you too. Write a list of 100 things you’d like to do before you die. Think of things that make you happy, and try to do them. Your purpose might not be to have riches and fun, but you have to live life that you must endure. Think a year from now, your life could be totally different.
P.S. try and read Psalms in the bible. Look til you find one that understands you. David was very depressed when he wrote them. The end in victory.

    • sheehanjihad

dulcimer girl…plus, you can always depend on me for a laugh…I enjoy bringing a smile to the faces of our posters….so hang in there girl….the sun will come up again. Trust me on that, ok?

  23. VMAN

Offered for your consideration. We see a man, an O hole if you will. Apart from the obvious reference to the human anatomy a man drawn down into the depth of his own depravity and pulling the country we love with him. Can he be stopped or will the inevitable happen because we’ve just crossed over into the O hole zone.

  24. MinnesotaRush

This o-blah-blah dude can be downright darn depressing; but ya know what .. I’m seeing a lot of ‘good’ comin’ out of it. Look how good & honest Americans are coming alive and engaging in maybe some ‘fixes’ .. some action.

Sadly .. maybe we all got a little more complacent than we should’ve; but look at the energy that is truly being re-ignited. Let’s keep it alive! .. and grow it! Keep connecting with like minded people .. go to the tea parties .. share ideas .. and stay informed .. stay connected.

It’s terrific that Steve got the (well deserved) recognition he did at CPAC. I’m guessing we’ll be seein’ some more and newer faces because of that.

And look at what’s happening here in this very thread. People coming together helping and encouraging each other. We really are blessed. And besides .. we got SJ and his tater stick! Does it get any better?!?!?!?

We got some work to do. But we’re not alone; and we’re moving in good directions. A gracious and loving God is really on the job .. so I’m thinkin’ that we just gotta keep doing our part the best we can. We can overcome.

God Bless us, all .. God Bless America!!! … and SJ … I’d be honored and happy to go with ya’ on that tater stick trip! … the Helen Thomas party woud be fun, too! Would we have to wear coat and tie?!?!?!? lol BTW .. s’pose we could stop by Franken’s office and say hi???
